  3. RAND folks have no idea what they're talking about. In my 28 years on active duty, the worst base for sexual abuse... by far the worst... was Randolph. The majority of pilots I know were sexually abused by personnel at that base. Though I was able to avoid the ubiquitous and frequent raping, it happened to many of my friends. Many of them separated at their earliest opportunity due to the repercussions of said abuse. The amazing part is that this abuse still occurs and is known by USAF leadership. It is important to know where to find the culprits. They are hidden behind the letter A, F, P, and C. Keep your guard up! I'm sure many of you have been sexually abused by AFPC. If so, you are not alone.

  4. No punks/future punks should form their opinion based on the metric shit ton of sport bitching that goes on here (I’m guilty). I spent 11 years AD and had a great time; the bullshit was there, but it’s not as bad as it seems here except in unique cases. And I say that not just because things worked for me, but because I can count on one hand the amount of legitimate “he got screwed” times that happened across 9 years in 4 fighter squadrons I was in + at least 6 others I was close with (i.e. the other FS on base), not to mention talking to friends from all over different communities in the AF. I got out because the next 9 years was not going to work for my family, but the first half of your career when you’re not married/married with no kids/only have very young kids - the things we bitch about as Majs with 2 older kids and a wife are just not a big deal yet. If you’re a young guy who wants to fly, you should consider the guard for sure, but don’t discount AD. Yeah you’ll probably want to punch around year 8-10, but there’s a good chance you’ll have a pretty good time for those 8-10 years. There’s also a chance you’re miserable, but I think that’s truly unlikely unless you are the most unlucky person in the world, or more likely, you’d still have a shitty attitude even if offered free blow jobs every day. FWIW, several of my airline friends talk about how much the old captains bitch about how much the airlines suck now, the company is always screwing pilots, management is bullshit, the old days were millions of times better than now, etc. Sound familiar? This is not to defend all the fuckery of the AF and the asshats who climb the ladder and are the root causes of many problems, but how bad do you want to fly awesome airplanes and shoot ISIS in the face/directly support those who do? If sport bitching Majs and some threat of dumb queep makes you second guess it, then go be a CFI, work your way to a regional, eventually get to a major and enjoy life.

  7. I thinks there is enough pushback, we used to be innocent until proven guilty. Prove it. He said/she said doesn’t work anymore, especially if it was how many years ago? Her history of activism and support for certain people also makes it very fishy. We should never ignore these claims, but shouldn’t give the accused consequences without some judge deciding on the facts. I peronally think it’s a bullshit political play, call me heartless, I don’t care. We see how the Dema deal with accusations a la Monica, scorched earth and lives destroyed (not on Clinton’s side for sure). I think we should give them a taste of their own medicine. If I’m wrong, I’m sorry for her, but I’m not.

  8. This is such a load of horse crap. The Democrats have flung this crap at the wall and are hoping something sticks. If K is innocent, he goes on the Supreme Court. If he is guilty, he not only no longer goes onto the Supreme Court and he loses he DC Circuit Court job which would be like be convicted. So, let's treat this like a criminal case because everyone is innocent until proven guilty under our system of justice. Okay, the FBI isn't a player since it would not be a federal case since it was not on federal property and nobody was a federal employee. The FBI investigated the Anita Hill accusations because of it was federal jurisdiction. They found nothing but Democrats still accuse and call Clarence Thomas a sexual predator. Anything that might have happened would be under the jurisdiction of the Maryland police. Well, the statute of limitations has expired, so they won't take it. Well, since the accusation was made by a woman and therefore must be heard no matter how sparse of facts, let's throw this in front of the circus that the Senate has become. The idiot Ford can't remember where, when, or who and nobody will back up here story. Doesn't matter, she is a woman sparse of facts and must be heard. She has demanded that K can't be in the room. Fine. She has demanded that she can't be questioned by K's lawyers. Well, that will get us nowhere since the Democrat Senate morons will just do more grandstanding in search of a Spartacus moment. Whatever happened to confront your accuser as guaranteed by our system of justice? She has demanded that K must testify first. How in the hell do you defend yourself if you have no idea what "facts" your accuser is going to use and thus be able to refute them. In no court is this miscarriage of justice allowed. Democrats are trying to run out the clock hoping to take the Senate in November. Screw them. Treat this like a grand jury hearing but the accused is allowed to give testimony in his defense. Give her the opportunity to testify under oath, K is already under oath, and if more information is brought forward that lends credence to further investigation that would torpedo K's career, investigate that information or dump K. If all Ford has is the current load of BS, vote K out of committee and put it on the Senate floor.

Show me the information you used to come to the conclusion that you wouldn't be expected to work long hours, live somewhere you may not have chosen to live or control every aspect of your life? How about your spouse worry less about her professional career and more about raising your kids. One less group of latchkey kids in daycare which ends up costing just as much as the working spouse is making - net pay zero. T-38 vs C-5 vs 11F...... ever hear of a phrase that goes... "The needs of the AF"? You think you're the first guy to get put into a MWS that wasn't his first choice? You think you'd be seeing your kid more flying a C-5 around the planet? If you're spending most of your time in a fighter worrying about that laundry list you have there, you need to ground yourself. You clearly lack the confidence in your abilities to do that job effectively. Getting violated...🙄 GMAFB. Going to war/participating in contingency ops has been part of life in the USAF since 1990. Once again, it appears you chose poorly. Having regard for "life outside the military" is for when you're no longer in the military. Welcome to reality - either change your goals to match it or look into changing your AFSC before you do kill yourself or someone else. Guard or reserves isn't the solution to your problem.

Why would I chairfly in front of a cockpit poster when I could interact with something virtual that provides enhanced learning? You can’t have unlimited flight training available, just not possible...so why not capitalize on better, cheaper alternatives?

How you just described your idea of what life in the AF is screams shitty attitude/hell bent on being negative. Your family will not go through hell just because you’re gone or you don’t live in your dream location. Yes there are good times and tough times, but that’s life no matter what you do or where you live. If you choose to have a positive attitude, you’ll likely find you enjoy a lot of things about being a mil pilot and you are actually able to provide a descent life for your family. The next 8-9 years will fly by in a second, don’t spend them being negative Nancy/making the AF the scapegoat for all your “problems.”

It might be awesome with great leadership and bountiful opportunities to pursue a life of religious fulfillment all along the way.   15. All my best stories, amazing experiences, and life long memories are from when I was AD or ANG deployed/TDY. Those are also the hardest times because you're away from family. All the stories my wife and I talk about are from when we were active duty and we've seen it all. AD Enlisted, ANG Enlisted, civilian with great careers, now ANG pilot who's considering going AD. All in all over 15 years of service in some form or another. We never say "Hey, remember that time we all went out with that civilian company you used to work for?" Hell, I could barely get the guys on my team to go do a happy hour on Friday kind of thing, and I was paying with the company card! I also remember literally getting so bored at times at work that I got tired of searching the internet. Being in the military is tough, being a fighter pilot makes it even more tough. It's difficult, it's dangerous, and you're busy all the damn time. It's also not forever. I will eventually move on, so will everyone else. But flying through the AOR in the middle of the night and getting re-rolled to go drop bombs on ISIS to support the guys on the ground makes it all worth it.

  16. Where I'm at we finally got a bunch of contract support in the squadron, which really frees up the time of the younger guys. We have WDO / Scheduling / Training and basically a mini CSS again (completely bragging). So I would say the quality of life of first assignment guys is higher, but it doesn't really matter because they are really excited to be in an ops unit and they don't know any different. There is a ton of real world operational experience on this board. AD USAF gives you a lot of opportunities that are not available anywhere else, but also it is highly variable and your results will vary significantly with your peers. The bottom line is that AD has a lot better deals and a lot worse deals than ANG. I think if you're the type of person that wants to fly in combat, you'll probably be drawn to AD - and good on you. The frustration here on the board is because AD could be so much better than it is. It's not that people don't like AD, it's all the surrounding BS that gets in the way.

  23. It's not necessarily about excluding them on purpose. It's about presenting the Air Force and flight training as an option to communities that don't usually hear that kind of thing, and hoping a few of them get interested. It's easy for a white boy from the suburbs of an Air Force base to get into the idea of joining to be a pilot. It may be harder for a girl who, even in 2018, still hears "That's a man's job" or "model airplanes are boy's toys". Similarly, in communities that are historically less educated, we can reach into those communities and show them the types of opportunities that exist for those willing to get an education. We may even reach the point where, similar to what the Air Force does with lawyers and doctors, we start paying for high school candidates with a high aptitude for flight to get an undergraduate degree (aside from the highly competitive USAFA process). I'm with you. The idea that we should weed out white men because "we have to many" or that we should promote minorities "to increase representation" is just terrible reasoning all the way around. I'm saying that we can do things to increase the number of minorities entering the service, giving us a greater number to pull from to fill those leadership positions/cockpits/etc.

  26. We draw from an all-volunteer force. Unless you can show me statistically where MEPS has made a habit of turning people away due to their skin color, religion, or sex (wherein we'd definitely have a problem), tell me where the Air Force is culpable in recruiting only a certain demographic. There may be multiple cultural norms or perceived perks in place which made military service much more palatable to one ethnicity or another, but these are all individuals deciding to sign on the line. If we go to a draft and specifically target minorities under the guise of creating a more diverse force, well, good luck with that optic. The minute we start recruiting specifically in the mindset of giving preferential treatment towards ANY gender, race, religion, background, education, creed, etc., we're no worse than the days before segregation, even if the intent of this is to "diversify our force". The same holds true if the service is showing anyone the door based on an attempt at shaping the force towards some sort of quota. At the end of the day, service, promotion, and retention should all be based on merit and capacity to hack the mission. Strip away any indicators on all records as to where a person comes from and let their bullets do the talking.

  28. Your PCSM is 1 higher than mine at all the same ranges. I have 21 hours. Your AFOQT pilot score is about 20 higher than mine. I have an engineering bachelor's at 3.2 gpa. Also I'm a few months older than you. I took the TBAS twice, first time was 43 with 3 hours. All this to help you judge where you are. From my experience at the heavy squadron I was just hired to, solo is a big step. When I visited leading up to the interview I was asked I think 3 times if I had soloed yet (I hadn't) and told to get the solo after the interview. My suggestion goes along with @FDNYOldGuy and get that solo. 21 hours helps too. Not an expert but hope this helps.

Right or wrong (no matter how poorly delivered) he has a point. I’ve been in homogenous MPCs and OPTs (by MWS/Service) and seen the shitshow firsthand. And I’ve been in those more diverse in background and experience and seen things get brought up that leadership was missing. That’s all the evidence I need. YMMV. You wanna get hung up on skin color or sex parts just because leadership is, that’s on you. Want diversity of background, ethnicity, wealth, education? Then grow it. In the meantime, we need to continue building the best replacements we can, regardless of who they were or are - so long as theyre the best. Nobody gives a damn about skin color when the balloon goes up. Chuck

  30. Just my .02 from seconding what @Yaweh said: you’ve got solid scores, a solid GPA, and you can build that PCSM with some hours. Your score is not terrible with such low hours, but you’d be certainly better off if you did as he said and get to at least 21 hours and aimed for a solo sign off, if you can swing it. I can’t advise on your AD hopes, but have you looked into the Unsponsored route, as well? Some heavy squadrons will cold-call Unsponsored guys since you’ve already got a slot, so it might be a way to get you higher on interview lists. Put together a professional looking packet and be locked down for your interviews, I think you’ll be a pretty solid candidate. Good luck!

  34. Eh, I'll throw you a bone. The shape of the airfoil, camber, is only one factor in lift. Trying to explain lift only with Bernoulli's equation is overly simplistic. A high lift wing is going to have that text book curved top, flat bottom, since it is designed to be efficient while flying upright. As others have mentioned, aerobatic wings tend to be symmetrical. So how do they generate lift with a symmetric wing? Angle of attack. A high lift wing could fly inverted, but it won't be very efficient, requiring a greater angle of attack than if it were upright. Maybe this inverted angle of attack required exceeds the critical AOA, resulting in stall and a plane that cannot maintain level inverted, or maybe not. The T6A at ~220 knots level has a pitch roughly at 0° to maintain level. Inverted level is roughly 15° nose up, which is held there with forward stick pressure. Also, more AOA means more induced drag, requiring more thrust to maintain level flight. Don't think of the horizontal stab as providing lift for inverted flight though, think of it as a mechanism to set your AOA regardless of whether you are upright or inverted. For a symmetric wing, the level AOA upright vs inverted would be very similar. Lift is almost solely based on AOA in these wings. There's your 2 cent overview of inverted flight. Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators is a good read if you want to nerd out on aerodynamics, or you can just push the "I believe" button. Now for some homework... 1) how do some airplanes fly knife edge (90° bank) and still maintain level flight? 2) is flying level inverted the same as passing through inverted in a loop or barrel roll? Or is there another force to consider?

  36. I'll take the bait: If these allegations are true, Kavanaugh should not be confirmed. Sexual assault is not ok regardless of what decade it happened in. If the allegations are found to be false after an investigation, press with a vote. These narratives about how things were different then, it was just rough housing, maybe it was someone else, this is a Dem hit job, etc. are appalling. Kavanaugh is flatly denying this ever happened or that he was even at the party in question, and that's the only defense that should be acceptable. If he didn't do this, sorry that false allegations were made and press with a vote that will almost certainly be in his favor. If he did commit this assault and is lying, that's disqualifying, end of story. Not sure why folks are coming up with all these alternative narratives that build a permission structure to waive this whole situation off regardless when Kavanaugh himself is outright denying everything. The fact that white, male, conservative justices like Roberts, Alito and Gorsuch were all nominated, confirmed with votes from both parties, and installed on the court without these kind of allegations kind of negates the idea that this is simply a Dem hit job. I mean, anything is possible, but we probably should have come up with this tactic a few justices ago right? Occam's Razor - he did it or Ford is lying and decided to set her seemingly nice life on fire very publically, I doubt very highly there is some conspiracy one way or the other. To me, the accuser has very, very little to gain here by making this public, and she did not seem to want to back in July before her name leaked out. Kavanaugh has a great deal to lose if this is true. We should hear from them both under oath, as well as other relevant witnesses like Mark Judge, who Ford says was in the room during the alleged assault. If after an investigation happens the allegations are true, withdraw him, nominate Hardiman or whoever else, and press...the GOP will still hold the WH and the Senate until January at a bare minimum, likely longer. After holding the Scalia seat open for over a year, I don't see any reason whatsoever for hasty speed to confirm Kavanaugh to a lifetime appointment that will likely last 30+ years. I don't support Kavanaugh for a variety of other reasons, but accusations of sexual assault shouldn't be a partisan issue. I would have voted no on Gorsuch too if I were a Senator, but he seemed upstanding and clean as a whistle, and that's what we should all want in each and every one of our Supreme Court justices.

  39. There's something to be said about reaching out to historically under-represented communities and trying to instill an interest in flying and aircraft early. Getting the local Girl Scout troop a tour of your sim or aircraft, sponsoring minority groups to come out to the airshow, etc. The point is to increase the diversity in the people who apply for the program, not to weed out straight white males to inflate the numbers.

  40. I think we all need to remember that those statements were essentially made under duress - at AFA - and saying anything other than what he said would have been met with dismissal. To the point, we need to diversify thought and expertise, background and education. Not necessarily parts or skin color. If you want that, you have to build that - which starts with recruiting. The service recruited a white male majority pilot force - it always has, because for 70+ years that’s who flew - and we can’t point the finger anywhere but ourselves. Want to change it? You have to grow it. All that was poorly wrapped into what was said at ATA - because some people can think on their feet and some can’t...   42. First off you still have a TON of time to go rated. So the dream IS NOT dead! This DQ is a small setback...they happen but with the right backing anything is possible. My advice enter your new AFSC and go all out and run with it. Do great work, network, network, network, build a solid foundation as an Officer with bitchin’ OPRs. And build a solid foundation of TRUST with your leadership now for potential reach back. Depending on your careerfield you may want to keep your rated aspirations quieter than in other AFSC in my experiences but feel out your leadership...they might be all in sooner versus later in my experience. Regardless, you can start your FC1 application any time. If your AFSC sees a flt doc your set(ish). Just ask your PCM you want to start your FC1 physical. If you see family medicine you have to ask to go see flt med to start your FC1. Regardless, you bring up what you posted above and the flt doc doing your paperwork will run with it. If it needs a waiver they’ll do that paperwork. If it doesnt need a waiver the flt doc should annotate it at a minimum and annotate its not a factor for FC1 per the waiver guide, afi xx-xx, etc. keep in mind when you get your FC1 approved though, Its only valid for 24months from certification from the AETC/SG per the UFT application AFI. Meaning dont start the process to get one approved in Jan19 when you wanna apply for the FY22 board. Your physical won’t be valid. Get the physical when u have an idea which rated board you intend to apply to. keep your head up boss. The air force is your muddy muddy oyster.

  43. I would try for Active if you want active, the worst that happens is they say no. Your AFOQT scores are very good, your GPA is good also. As for flying I would continue to gain hours and if at all possible get to atleast your SOLO and complete that. I wouldnt break your bank to try and force a PPL out. The TBAS range for hours are 0 hours/ 1-5 hours/ 6-10 hours /11-20 hours/21-40 hours/41-60 hours/61-80 hours/ 81-100 hours / 101-200/ 201+ I personally would continue flying till you SOLO & get above 21 hours at a minimum. Push for active duty if you want, let the Air Force tell you no. As far as the LASIK information, I think this forum has a lot of useful information about it, but if you can complete your FC1 that would be the ultimate source of information in my opinion. Good luck on your TBAS, it was a very fun test. Also good luck on your journey!

  48. The military, like the government, works best when it’s made up of the people. Not just the predominantly Southern, conservative, white male people (though that’s what many seem to be most comfortable surrounding themselves with), but a true cross section of the American populace. That will help our communities begin reconnecting with their military. I absolutely agree with Chuck’s “grow diversity” sentiment. This doesn’t necessarily mean promoting based on ethnicity/race/gender (although I admit this does happen). But recruiting from a broader cross section is certainly a worthy goal.

  50. I was the one posting about being enlisted army and a doctor, so what? You are not the first person trying to be a A-hole to me.. people don't understand why I do things no one else would.. I've been through army enlisted boot camp and medic training as a doctor and have seen tons of folks trying to mess with me just because - I'm different. If you don't want to answer my question, then fvck off. Nobody's asking you to come here and give me attitude. A proctologist is a doctor too and deserves respect. You did nothing in your life that even comes close to what a doctor does so please don't tell me I should know answers to basic physics questions. Sleeping 2 hours/ night in the call room, never getting 8 hours sleep at once, yet still put a smile on my face and talk to patients in the ER at 3AM answering the most basic questions they pose, sometimes that are seemingly irrelevant and annoying. Been doing that for over 5 years at American hospitals. And here you guys are, coming after me for asking something I don't know. What makes you think you can bitcch at someone? This Airforce pilot job is a break for someone like me. As an AF pilot you sleep uninterrupted, 7 days/wk and are with your gf/wife in the end no matter how late. Even on deployments you sleep unless you're on alert. You have a life that you enjoy. Doctors in America don't. So with all due respect I suggest please mind your own business.
