General Discussion

Discuss general topics in the Military and Aviation. Please post pilot-selection & "how do I get a pilot slot" questions in their appropriate forums.

Hello friends. 6 to 9 month ago, I retired as a T-38 IP reservist. Talking to friends that are still hacking the mish (cool pilot talk 🙂 ), they are seeing numerous problems in T-38 land. 1st, the reduction in T-6 syllabus flying time is noticeable in newbie skill level and SA. 2nd, flight room daily morning briefs and daily stand-up are a thing of the past due to.... 3rd, IP manning is terrible. Supposedly AETC needed 249 IPs in FY 2019, they got 150 - everyone is separating. 4th, there are not enough civilian simulator instructors. Anyone else seeing the same stuff? I am drinking Belgian beer in Belgium right now. I hope you all find your way off the sinking s…

  2. Hopefully, the Russians (long ago) removed all them nuke artillery projectiles/nuke warheads/etc that were stored at this site - back in the day. There's a potential for a wee bit of fallout from this accident if these nuke assets are still stored at this site and they were involved/damaged/consumed by the conventional explosions/fires/etc. Note; Once upon a time - this particular "Nuclear Weapon Storage Site was probably on our ICBM/Nuke Bomber hit list":<)

I’m an active duty Capt who managed to escape the MSG and about to start UPT at Columbus. I heard some gouge (from two Lt FAIPs) about late rated guys who end up tracking T-38s rarely end up in a fighter. Do they not like sending older folks to fighters (I’m 29)? Is there some truth here or is it just anecdotal Lt rumor? P.S I’m still very much a free agent on what I’d like to fly, I’m not a fighters or bust dude just after information

  4. I commission into the active duty Air Force via an interservice transfer in August. AFPC/DP2LT is saying I need to PCS to my gaining unit (OCONUS) to in-process and then proceed TDY for my initial -135 PIQ course. The MSgt at the AFPC office is concerned that I won’t get paid if I don’t in-process prior to going TDY. When I reached out to my gaining base finance, that MSgt was wondering why I needed to go there first and not just do a TDY enroute. I realize doing an interservice transfer is a rare occurrence, but would anyone know applicable AFIs or AFMANs that might apply? Or, just know the answer? For many reasons I’d rather go TDY enroute than PCS and I’m hoping I…

I am looking for some help on the TBAS flashcards. I understand the concept and am able to get the correct answers when it shows the direction I am heading on the compass, but when it shows it on the map like in these two images I cannot figure out what direction I am heading. Based on what I see, the top of the map is North, so the it looks I would be heading East and North in the two images respectively. However, I know this is wrong but I can't figure out why. What am I missing that shows I would be heading West and South?

Any aviators here who have set their wings down, made the jump, and parted the curtains on the new 13O gig? I’m well outside the window... I’m just curious to hear initial impressions, thoughts, and regrets if you have any. Any rumors on which LAF category you might promote in?

  10. Started by Chandler,

I was referred to this forum by a current active duty AF pilot. I am currently in the end process of the AF Officer application process and currently have a scheduled start date for OTS. There are a couple of things that have come up in the last couple of weeks that have raised some red flags regarding the information I have been given by my recruiter versus what I have been told by several current AF pilots as well as a flight instructor. I am wanting to fly, however my overall GPA from college is just under the 3.00 requirement (2.75). What I was told by the recruiter that I have been dealing with is that if I want to apply for a pilot slot, I would have to get in…

Is there a way to get a GPS plug in puck like bad elf, and use foreflight military with the GPS on our issued EFBs? Or we only allowed to use something like stratux, which we connect wirelessly? Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Baseops Network mobile app

We’re looking to change our squadron call sign to better align with our heritage, but the base call sign manager says our choice isn’t legal based on AFI 33-217. We want to use CHETR XX (pronounced Cheater). 33-217 has been rescinded according to the e-pubs website, but the call sign manager says that he has to still apply it because the Air Force level call sign manager still uses it. Anybody got experience dealing with this?

  15. Just saw this in the news this morning. I thought this would have already been posted here, but couldn't find it. I'd like to buy this guy a beer. I bet he has some insane stories. U.S. Air Force veteran accused as mercenary in Libya’s civil war is freed June 25 at 10:48 PM An American Air Force veteran who was accused of acting as a mercenary in Libya has been freed after a six-week detention, officials said Tuesday, in a murky episode that highlights the tangled nature of that country’s civil war. Jamie Sponaugle, a 31-year-old Florida man, was piloting an aircraft near the Libyan capital of Tripoli on May 7 when his plane went down, according to off…

  16. Interesting argument for light (very light) on-demand direct airlift for small, specialized cargo/passenger requirement. https://warontherocks.com/2019/06/featherweight-airlift-for-want-of-a-nail/ Is there a requirement for this? Is it affordable? Does it offer secondary benefits? It was interesting that the authors were/are respectively both fighter aircrew and not airlift aircrew advocating for this, thoughts?

Has anyone ever successfully fought a commander directed Q3? If so, what is the winning strategy? I realize that there are times when a commander directed Q3 is warranted, but I have also heard way too many stories of BS ones too - mainly from risk averse commanders attempting to save face in front of their boss. Other than an MFR to the next highest commander in the chain, what should one do to contest it? -9- Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  19. Okay my question might be a little dull but my question is genuine. I have been doing research but I am kind of stuck on a point. So my question is what are your suggestions for schools for flight training and particularly ones that offer a bachelors degree? UND, Embry Rittle, and Bridgewater is all out of my state and I don't see the point of going out of state, if I can find a college in state that would be much more affordable. Im in Virginia. Also another thing I have been researching is whether I should join first then go to college or join later out of college? And will they still pay the tution? What are my options cause I can't seem to make up my mind on thi…

I may not get a response to this question. Pilots normally don't give a sh t. Does the Major service cap have the farts and darts or is it for Lt Cols and above.

I believe the AF SUPT max age without a waiver is still 30. As of last month the Navy increased their age for pilots and NFOs training to the age of 32. For those AF SUPT applicants that were turned down for age consideration, the Navy may be an option. No word on USMC age changes. Remember in going Naval Air, approximately 50% are assigned helos as an initial assignment. But they do have P-8 (737s) waiting in the wings for all you future airline pilot hopefuls.

Things like this, plus CAF PR’s inability to sell themselves to AFSOC as a worthwhile platform signify the quickly approaching end to AF CSAR. Not overnight mind you, but it’s coming...
