Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

I'd like to break this out into its own thread on money, finance, and government spending, and so it's being placed here in the bar. Before any discussion, here are some sources to share, for folks who want to do start their own research and verify claims. If we want to understand money, what it is and always has been, a good place to start is coinage (silver, gold and other commodity money): https://www.amazon.com/Making-Money-Currency-Coming-Capitalism/dp/0198709579 Desan shares great examples from the origin of market capitalism (the UK), for example how the end of the Roman empire lead the inhabitants of the British Isles to abandon coinage in 400AD …

I graduated in 2011, so it's been a while. But I remember going to Little Kitchen just off base on weekend mornings, occasionally being served by the same person who had entertained us the previous night at the Pony, and I thought they had some interesting decor on the walls. One of these items, located far in the back of the seating area (as far from the front door as I recall), was a framed printout of a poem. All I remember was that it was something about old soldiers no longer being so bold or no longer wanting to go to war, or something like that. Now that I'm out, it's been on my mind. Can anyone there do a little recon and post either the text or a photo of the pie…

Not sure if this is the right place, but in what little spare time I’ve got on my (Navy) shore tour I started a podcast! The idea is to capture unique military aviation flying stories and share them with a wider audience that appreciates them. Since this audience is uniquely suited to poke holes in the idea, I really do appreciate any and all feedback to continually improve: Available on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/safe-on-deck/id1615450730 And on YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCI6ty4FeKpM3p14acae-AjQ For those interested in some USAF content, the two interviews with John Miller (F-105F/ F-117 pilot) were especially …

In what is perhaps the most dystopian thing Biden and his extremists have ever proposed it appears we will now have a Disinformation Czar that falls under the Department of Homeland Security. Department of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that his agency is creating a “Disinformation Governance Board.” Is anyone paying attention? Does anyone care? If you swore an oath to the Constitution you should be appalled and shocked. The proposal gives this board the ability to regulate free speech, to take down websites, to control what the press reports. For the record, previous organizations like this only existed in Russia, Nazi Germany, Iran and North K…

Saw an IG meme summarizing a recent event at Littlerock. Sounds like leadership was down on their hands and knees pleading for pilots to stay and not go to the airlines. Anyone that was there have first hand intel? It’s a glorious event if true.

  12. Interesting...but glad he's OK! (source) An F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet piloted by the son of a candidate to be the Oklahoma attorney general crashed in rural Louisiana on Wednesday during a training exercise. Gentner Drummond, a former Air Force captain and Republican seeking the top law office in the Sooner State, said in a Facebook post that the plane was flown by his son, Alexander, a captain major in the Oklahoma Air National Guard 138th Fighter Wing who ejected prior to the crash... To consolidate discussions from both the Ukraine & politics threads. Open for discussing all things energy policy! I’ll lead with this: despite rhetoric to the contrary, US domestic oil production is projected to set a new record high in 2023, reflecting a full recovery from the losses due to the pandemic. “U.S. crude oil production averaged 11.2 million b/d in 2021. We expect production to average 11.8 million b/d in 2022 and to rise to 12.4 million b/d in 2023, which would be the highest annual average U.S. crude oil production on record. The current record is 12.3 million b/d, set in 2019.” Source: Energy Information Administration Short-Term Energy …

I entered AD in 2010, and will be getting out this year. Am I elligible for the Montgomery GI Bill? All the requirements appear to say that I must have "had my pay reduced" by some amount for a year. Anyone have any gouge on this benefit and if it's worth it? For SA, I applied to Grad school in San Francisco to a 3 year program, and I plan on using my Post 9/11 benefits for that. But I also don't want to miss out on the Montgomery if it makes sense.

‘You are the reason I drink’ — Airmen bid adieu to decrepit aircraft dubbed ‘Lucifer’s Chariot’ “four terrible and terrifying years that aged me well beyond where I should be.” “You are the reason I live to forget.” “582, you’re a real nasty lady,” said Markham. “I had some great memories, but most of them involved getting off the aircraft and sprinting away from you.”

Possibly coming to the US. If big enough it would bring the entire country to a stand still. Big cities would be hit the hardest. I don't think a lot of people realize that literally everything, everything, no matter what it is, was brought in at some point on a truck. I support this protest as a message to the "ruling class" as a reminder who they are supposed to be working for.

Open invite to merge this with the "Things to Listen to While Drunk on BO" thread...but here's the equipment angle. Does anyone here have a sweet stereo setup? Thinking about ditching my 2000's era 5.1 stuff and buying some restored vintage equipment for a 2.1 setup. Or, after 10 years and 1500+ hours of jet noise and another 10-20 to go, should I even bother?

  21. "Perhaps the best Air Force recruiting commercial in history was posted to social media on Monday, but the Air Force recruiting service had nothing to do with its creation. The 14-second long video shows a pair of pilots making their way down the flight line at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, flight-suited up and carrying their helmet bags. The thing is, one of them is not walking: he’s rolling on a skateboard while holding what looks to be a cell phone to his ear..." https://taskandpurpose.com/mandatory-fun/air-force-pilot-skateboard-flightline/ 1504528583_AirForceamnncosncoonFacebookWatch.mp4

Am I not understanding this correctly? I was just browsing the 2022 tax brackets and found it terrible that in the 35% and 37% bracket married couples are taxed far more harshly than those who are single. Bracket / Single / Married Filing Jointly 35% $215,950 to $539,900 $431,900 to $647,850 37% $539,900 or more $647,850 or more So two people who live together and share a life together, but are not married can make $1,079,7999 together and not enter the 37% tax bracket. Yet at $647,850 a married couple enters the 37% tax bracket? Is that correc…

Figured the Ghislaine Maxwell trial might merit it's own thread. Pulled the below from the Woke thread. Interesting article. While it sounds like Maureen Comey is very capable and has a distinguished career thus far, it's hard not to suspect nepotism had an effect on her career. Guess it's not surprising; nepotism seems to be a phenomenon throughout the DoD, why wouldn't it be so at the DoJ. Just another contributing factor to the swamp, as pointed out above. On a related note, the article mentions Maurene Comey as one of three lead prosecutors handling the case, along with Assistant US Attorneys Alex Rossmiller and Alison Gainfort Moe. AUSA Alex Ros…
