It’s not bordering vulgar, it is vulgar. These poor souls haven’t even been dead 24 hours yet and this is the topic he wants to bring up in a presser discussing the accident?6 points

Sounds a lot of like when the left blames the right, gun manufacturers, lack of gun control, etc after a shooting before the bodies are cold. They sadly both do it and it’s all bad IMO, so I definitely agree with you that this specific one is bad on Trump. This is the sickness of our politics.4 points

The Pro age 67 FB group had a post this morning with the following quote. This accident on short final at DCA has inexperience written all over it. Please get out there and push for an EXECUTIVE ORDER to RAISE THE AGE IMMEDIATELY. We, the airline industry, are directly responsible for these deaths. There is no depth too low for which these guys will stoop, all in the name of getting theirs. Sadly he's one of us at DAL but is scheduled to retire in March. It can't get here soon enough. WTF is wrong with some people.4 points

I did some time in the 1st HS. Both of these situations present themselves quite often. I've had to hover on several occasions to wait for landing traffic. At night, in DC, NVGs were not too effective with all of the cultural lighting. It could be very easy to maintain visual separation with the wrong aircraft. What a bad day for everyone involved.4 points

DEI is horrible and needs to be destroyed, BUT it almost certainly has zero to do with last night. But, that hasn’t stopped millions of people (president on down) from declaring DEI as causal. It’s really sad because those people are showing their ignorance/clinging attachment to a politicized topic, but equally sad that the progressive left has created such a massive problem that many people just now assume that’s the cause. Bad all around.3 points

Flew that a few times. Helicopter route 4 is on the east side of the river. Most airliners land 01/19, which keeps them on the West side and no conflict. Landing 33 crosses helicopter route 4 on short final. From ATC audio, PAT25 called vis sep prior to the mid-air. Speculation, but they may have spotted one of the other airliners that usually stack up along the Potomac in sequence, or lost visual amongst the background lights (not sure if 12AB normally runs on NVGs there...the city gets very bright so it was often a coin toss on whether to scan mostly on or off goggles.) (I was once told to orbit over Bolling for landing traffic 33, at night.) A bit of a nightmare situation.3 points

Completely absurd. Inexperience on the airliner caused this? I haven't heard anything to put blame on the airliner yet. Maybe they might have seen it and gone around, but if that's the argument then it's even more absurd as young people generally have better eyesight, so maybe we should lower the retirement age again...2 points

Terrible. Here is the audio/radar feed of the situation. Couple things from an airline pilot perspective. - I'm still thankful that my aircraft doesn't go into DCA (and LGA/JFK). Not only does it make life easier, but I get to avoid the mess that is DCA. - Not saying this couldn't happen on the other runway. But no way, I'm accepting a circle to land that late in the game, especially at night. Could I do it, sure, but no thanks. Airline flying is boring and should always be boring. Unable is one of the best words in our flying vocabulary. - I know they may not have VHF capes, but if they do, why not use it in this area? Many moons ago the F-16 got VHF capability but noone wanted to use it. We're on a joint use field and one day we had a runway incursion (ATCs fault), but easily could have been noticed by us if we were on UHF. I brought up why not switch to VHF for gnd/twr/app/dep and naturally, the old fucks told the young punk to STFU. A few years later, we had nearly the same event happen and being more senior, I was able to get the change instituted. HUGE increase in SA when you hear both sides of the ATC conversation with all the bug smashers and other airliners. - Based on that track and the aircraft and lots of NVG time, I know I could have easily mistaken the light behind the CRJ as the traffic they called out. - ADS-B is great and can be a life saver, but it often lags or just doesn't work great. I'd like to have the extra SA though. I actually used it once as number 3 during a flyby in the local area when I saw a buddy flying his Husky right toward the path of our flyby. Jumped over on CTAF and asked him to turn south for a minute. Worked great and he sent me a nice video of the flyby (missing man).2 points

TCAS is in traffic advisory below 900' agl, And is common to hear- like the collision alert going off at ATC as they see the fireball. PAT was Mode S, good enough. TCAS can't save you. ADSB IN is not provided in many airlines, only OUT, also won't save you. Pat25 likely never saw their target at RWY33. They likely saw AAL3130 on final to RWY1. NVG distance error or blindspots or whatever, RIP. Water is only a few yards deep there, like hitting the ground, then cold/wet.2 points

It does, and feels like they called the wrong aircraft in sight. Twitter comments are typical social media “they called the airliner in sight, so they must have hit it intentionally.” Yeah, jabroni…that’s it.2 points

Treason should not be pardonable (obviously assuming due process given and found guilty in trial). If all accounts are true, Milley should be swinging from a rope, not just retiring with lower rank/pay. We’ve completely gone soft on so many things, and treason is maybe the most egregious one of them.2 points

This is going to be emotional. For context, the last mass-casualty event for a US p121 carrier was Colgan 2008. 8B pax since then. We are simply ruthless about running down the causes and prevention in this business. It’s a good thing. But it hurts when the swiss cheese lines up.1 point

Dude exactly, when the E-9s push this crap, especially in a deployed environment, I tell them I assume that everything else must be going great, otherwise you have your priorities completely jacked up. When you are an E-9 or Commander, you only have so many “swings at the bat” to make meaningful impact, if you just wasted it on uniform wear then… Finally, and this instance is proof, E-9s only push this crap because they are enabled by their Commanders. Finally, I’m all about correcting folks if they look like a bag of a$$ in uniform, that doesn’t need command level guidance especially from the CSAF.1 point

Last week I'm going into SFO at night on the converging visual 28R and ATC calls out the traffic to our left and asks if I have it in sight. We look, point, think we see it but aren't sure as its camo'd in the cultural lights and since it's really converging towards a common point, isn't moving much in the window. So we say no, they cancel our clearance, and we are given a level off. All good things so far for two approaches that could have been better separated laterally. We eventually positively ID'd the traffic and are able to continue the approach. Last night, I didn't hear on the tapes if PSA was ever alerted to PAT. I'm guessing the "Vis-sep" heard is probably the sup. It really sucks to be the ATC guy/ATC sup right now.1 point

Agreed, never stated 5.7 was applicable to normal self defense situations as it was derived for military use hence body armor not a normal civil state thought process. Most of the current CCW models are geared towards civilian defense measures and not duty criteria. While several sub-compacts have been derived from full size military versions these concealment versions definitely cater to the civilian defense market. Despite having a 5.7 from the original manufacturer many moons ago it hasn’t been a CCW for myself. With the major improvements with 9mm well over a decade ago I have stayed with it. Round count is your choice and during winter heavy clothing I prefer the compact types with 17/18 rds and my summer carry runs 13/15 rds among my rotations. Either way whatever you choose train with it. Better to have something vs nothing, better to be familiar and capable with it than anything. I always need to train more, unfortunately I get caught up with shooting the latest and greatest addition even though I do bring the carry options and shoot at least a few mags at my neighbors farm. Definitely not enough. Side note only: Not many events on the blotter of those encountering body armor during a self defense encounter like Lord Ratner said, but if you want to defeat armor speed is king caliber wise. Rifles bring on a whole new level of penetration. 5.7 definitely is pricey, but there was a time when some could be had for $20/50 rds when FN overloaded the market with some now banned steel core. ATF put a stop to that real quick unfortunately. SS190 (restricted) or more likely the SS192 was controversial. Current lots are just sporting rounds for the most part.1 point

Career badges are impossible to decipher. Give rated wings, kill all the other badges and give them basic tabs not broken out but broad. CE, WX, SF, ATC, etc. don’t make 10 different identifiers for each career field. Gives people pride and makes it easy to see what they do. Pilots do it with flight suits, let everyone else have a little morale and pride as well, within reason.1 point

The obvious counterpoint is that the average self-defense posture doesn't include planning for body armor. And 5.7 doesn't have great ballistics. It doesn't have bad ballistics, but for the higher price you probably want better performance. Against armor it's the only option for compact concealability. But I'm not sure how much I care. Personally, one of the reasons I carry is because I have kids, and the places that kids congregate have become (rare, admittedly) targets for the social-reject-mass-shooters. That's probably the most likely bad guy to have body armor in a self-defense situation... short of a Heat-style bank robbery, and I ain't getting involved in that 🤣😂. If one can consider the ballistics of 5.7 "good enough" for CCW purposes (verdict pending), and we don't care about body armor, then we still have the issue of capacity. 21 rounds is a *lot* of lead to throw at a problem, and like I said, I don't carry spare magazines, and neither do most others. Going from 13 to 21 for a sub compact (and 13 rounds is a recent development thanks to the P365X) is a huge upgrade. And the ammo cost is mostly irrelevant since this isn't a gun to take to the range for a full day of shooting. 1k-2k rounds to get comfortable, then 100 rounds every few months to stay proficient. Some high-dollar personal defence ammo for when you are carrying, but that's (hopefully) a one-time charge. So I'm gonna get it and see. I've got to do more research on the ballistics. I might just buy a pork butt and see for myself. I know the round will zip through bone, but will it just zip through the bad guy entirely? Not ideal. Then it has to feel and carry like the P365x which I absolutely love. With KelTec, who knows? Also it's fucking hideous, but I feel it can get away with that for being truly unique. Besides, M2 proves every day that you can be hideous *and* useful. 🤣🖕😚1 point

20+1 rounds in a top-loading auto pistol is intriguing, and at that price point it well may be worth trying; but I have never been a fan of the 5.7x28mm round. Sure, it will penetrate soft body armor than most handgun rounds; but what really are the odds of that being a factor in a self-defense situation? Plus, my house pistols are only to get me to my Mossberg 500! It can get decent penetration and expansion if you use ammo such as the Federal Personal Defense 40g JHP; but there are much better self-defense calibers out there which are easier and cheaper to find. As LR stated, it does have velocity, recoil and capacity in its favor; but the potential drawbacks such as over-penetration and cost would never replace the .45 or 9mm in my opinion. But at four hundred bucks (MSRP), it certainly is interesting enough to try if I ever see one available. My safes are full of firearms I bought just for the opportunity to shoot them! I am glad a buddy had a S&W Model 500 that he let me shoot, it saved me a lot of money realizing that particular revolver just wasn't for me! There's not a huge moose threat here in southcentral Texas!1 point

Reports I've seen only mention Trump criticizing DEI initiatives in the FAA and ATC, with no blame pointed towards the crews. WSJ link. Granted, I haven't listened to his remarks myself. But while pointing fingers at this early stage is clearly crass and bordering on vulgar, Trump is also not wrong. The FAA's push for DEI in the ATC ranks over the past several years is well documented. https://www.tracingwoodgrains.com/p/the-faas-hiring-scandal-a-quick-overview0 points
