Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Everyone needs raise a glass for ClearedHot, who is celebrating a major milestone in his career today! Those who know him know what I am talking about, and the rest of you will just have to take my word for it; but it is a substantial achievement for any Air Force officer and I can think of no one more worthy than CH! CH, I wish I could have been there to celebrate with you, but my schedule just wouldn’t allow it. But I will toast your accomplishment this evening in line with Air Force traditions! Cheers! M2

As a friend said "Like putting Sandusky in charge of the Boy Scouts." GUEST OPINION by Don Bendell JOHN KERRY FOR SECDEF? HELL NO! On February 2, 2011, I fell off a ladder landing on a steel fence in below-zero weather, fracturing my back, a rib, and got a minor concussion as well as a subdural hematoma, a brain bleed. Then, last fall I fell off the top of another ladder in my barn and severely bruised my hip, thigh, and a rib. Eight years ago, I wrote about my wife having rotator cuff surgery, getting an infection, and having to be cut in the same scar and operated on again. Just thinking about such pain and facing traumatic memories like those, makes me cringe. …

Saw this on another site. Was wondering what most of you guys thought. New York Post April 13, 2005 Clashing Military Cultures By Ralph Peters Last month, I sat in the office of Col. Jon "Dog" Davis, a veteran Marine aviator. While at war, the Corps' pilots had seen a rise in their accident rate. Davis was determined to do something about it. I wanted to be sympathetic, so I said, "Well, you're flying some very old aircraft." Davis, a taut, no-nonsense Marine, looked me in the eye and said, "They may be old, but they're good. That's no excuse." As commander of the Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 out in Yuma, Ariz., Davis could ha…

  4. I am working on my post-VSP pipe dream. I have been talking to Cameron-Brooks and trying to separate the sales pitch from reality. I think I heard the guy salivating over his commission already. Has anyone had any luck breaking into the finance or consulting industries in Chicago, New York, Boston, etc? Any constructive advice or contacts would be appreciate. Stats for reference: Did well at the Zoo, the AF (multiple strats, awards), and MBA (4.0, Brick and Mortar, but not top tier). Just a simple What are my chances? question for the real world. Thanks.

So, I thought it might be fun to see what kind of aviation patches you guys have that are unintentionally funny. Not a gag patch, but one that was supposed to be serious but ended up being not so much. My favorite is this bit of Engrish from Korea: The McDonald Davis F-16 Eagle

I propose that if anyone has any Herk stories, post a few of them here. 10% Rule in effect unless your story starts with "This ain't no shit." Link to story with more links: C-130 Anniversary If someone doesn't like a story, too bad, piss off and go hate elsewhere. Out Edit, cause I ain't known for spellin months right.

Got an email today saying I have to fill out some certification in order to comply with some federal clean air act section 69b. My vehicle is registered in Florida, where no smog/emissions test is required. The FAQ in the email says you still have to fill out the form if you register your vehicle in a state that does not require testing. I answered truthfully (no tests done on my vehicles), and then got an email saying I have 30 days to have my cars checked. WTFO

So my personnel record in the Air Force dates all the way back to 1999. But now for some reason, according to the AF, I don't have any proof that I am a US citizen and I have to track down an original copy of my birth certificate or I get derported I guess. BTW, my family came over from Scotland in the 1700s and I never left the US until I was 21. Pretty impressive even for the MPF if you ask me. Anybody else have this problem.

Taking odds on just how badly the Air Force will water down the coming fad that will be 360 leadership. Given all the recent press about GO/FO misconduct and mistreatment there is a lot of chatter about 360 leadership coming to a base near you. I predict it will be an epic fail unless the real seniors put some teeth in it. 360 Leadership is supposed to be feedback that comes from members of an employee's immediate work circle. Most often, 360-degree feedback will include direct feedback from an employee's subordinates, peers, and supervisor(s), as well as a self-evaluation. I have two questions for those in charge; why aren't we doing it already and why do we have …

Saw an IG meme summarizing a recent event at Littlerock. Sounds like leadership was down on their hands and knees pleading for pilots to stay and not go to the airlines. Anyone that was there have first hand intel? It’s a glorious event if true.

Does anyone know a good place to buy them? I've been looking all over the internet and they are pretty expensive for the type I'm looking for. One of my buddies found a place that sells "imperfect" boxes for ridiculously cheap, but he can't remember the site anymore. He bought five of them and they all looked perfect.

I have a cousin there and she said text, email, and Facebook alerts were sent out to students about shots being fired on campus. It started outside of one of the dining halls and a police officer was shot dead. One suspect has been apprehended but another is at large. More gunshots are being reported near a drillfield near the center of the campus as another person has been pronounced dead. Supposedly it was just a routine traffic stop that started this.
