General Discussion

Discuss general topics in the Military and Aviation. Please post pilot-selection & "how do I get a pilot slot" questions in their appropriate forums.

  1. Who has the skinny on the F-16 RTU students who never flew in Phase III at SUPT and just did sims? I hear there are 2 at Kelly, certainly we have a UPT or Kelly instructor on here to verify. There is more to the rumor but it’s hard to believe. It certainly would increase production quickly.

  2. The forum has been particularly active lately with several of the threads talking about the same, similar or tangents of the same topic: the current version of the Air Force is broken and getting worse. Symptoms of this are being discussed: pilot retention being abysmal, anecdotes of oblivious attitudes to operational support from different nonner shops, the somewhat desperate move(s) to change conditions outside of the AF or close off opportunities outside the AF to "encourage" retention, the threat of Stop Loss being publicly (if mistakenly) discussed and the indifference expressed by previous leadership, not really rebuked by current leadership, etc... If …

Hello folks, I'm a T-38 stud and my dream sheet is due next Friday. I wanted to ask for advice from some of the seasoned dudes around here who have experience doing the mission and know the ins and outs of combat aviation and what it really means to be an operational fighter pilot. There are a few things I know with absolute clarity: 1) I want to be a fighter pilot, period, dot , the end. 2) I want to have a kinetic impact on whoever it is we fight, i.e. rain hate on bad guys. 3) There is an incredible amount that I don't know that I don't know. Given those conditions, I want to ask the question, if you had to go back and talk to your ~24 yr old self about to fill out you…

  5. The Air Force MARS Phone Patch Net has been operational since the Vietnam War. Hundreds of patches daily were handled through the early 80’s when bases starting closing their MARS stations. Today the net is tasked to handle DoD patch requests in support of transports, tankers, bombers and other aircraft and ground units handling routine weather, ETA/Customs, maintenance, etc. calls as well as emergency support. Morale calls are still happily handled. For more information see the website below. In the fall of 2014 the Chiefs of AF & Army MARS approved joint operations with AF and AR MARS stations participating. Chief Air Force MARS has approved a re-d…

Each service was given the opportunity to set their own bonus. It could be handed out at the 8-12 year mark and the amount could be anywhere between 2.5-13X your base pay based upon the needs of the service. Accepting adds a 4 year ADSC... AF finally released their details. You get 2.5X base pay for an additional 4 years. It will be handed out at the 12 year mark for all those who opt into the BRS. For the officers its: 2.5 X $7230 (Major over 12) = 18,075 After taxes approx $13,556 $3,390 per year LOL

Quick question and I apologize if this had been covered before.... We are being told the "New" definition of a stop over point now forced you to get Per diem for where the jet is at midnight not where you crew rest... In point we have a trip where we drop into Guam to pick up pax, etc (cross midnight while doing so) and them go on to Hawaii for crew rest. Our good idea fairy in the FM shop wants us to get Guam Per diem instead of Hawaii where we are crew resting... Are we missing something here? Is this happening to other squadrons? To us it doesn't make any sense......we should be getting Per diem based on where we pay for a hotel, food, etc?

Does anyone know if we can get a copy of AERO installed on our personal iPads? If not, is foreflight the way to go, or are there any cheaper alternatives? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

CSAF / SecAF say reduce/resize regs... Informal poll: Should 11-217 stay or go? Should it just be 11-202 and the AIM (Navy style)? Any and all thoughts appreciated.

My wife was recently offered a job at the pentagon and isn’t sure about taking it. Her hesitation is she doesn’t want me to stop flying. So, with a C17, T6 and C208 background and a few bases In the area what’s the possibility of flying attached to one of those units while working the the HAF? I know I’m probably going to get laughed out of the park on this one since flying staff job are a dying breed. However I️ have to ask and am looking for people that have good intel before we make a decision. Any info would be appreciated. If I’m missing something let me know.

Local news reports are stating that one of the Thunderbird F-16s flipped while taxiing due to wind gusts at KDAY. No injuries are being reported. A quick search yielded no photos or more information.

A quick search didn't show any results for info concerning Holloman, so I'm starting a new thread. Wife and I are headed to Holloman in a few months for B-Course and are trying to figure out whether to live on/off base and if off, where the good places to live are, as well as any useful info for the local area.

I am currently working on my masters thesis in engineering management and trying to lock onto a topic right now. My advisor developed a heuristic for process scheduling based on priority versus deadlines and wants me to help him see if it apply's to and how how well it works in non-manufacturing related processes. So here are my preliminary questions... 1) What method does the AF use to schedule it's flights (software, etc)? 2) Is the method standard for both training environments and real missions? 3) Are there any significant problems that arise with the way scheduling is currently done? Once I go AD in June I'll get to see this a little better but I need to …

I'd like a template of a lineup card for formation flying. Something from the T-38 or T-6 is probably the best for what I need, but I'll take anything. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. It needs to be editable. PM me for an email address to send it. Thank you.

I don't know why this is an issue every time I attempt it. I get told 18 different things by 16 different people. Attempting to go from LHR>JFK>ORF. Langley is my TDY location. Then am going to book my own (miles) to Tucson for a couple days leave. Optimum would be to fly home (LHR) from Tucson. Attempted to do that and CTO said the following FLIGHT COMMENTS: CANNOT FLY ON GOV RATES FROM A LEAVE LOCATION DELTA WILL ALLOW A STOP IN JFKAmended my tickets to pickup the Heathrow return from JFK. Then they kicked back for this.** CANNOT FLY OUT OF JFK YOU MUST HAVE A ROUND TRIP FROM ORF THE AIRLINE WILL ALLOW A FREE STOP IN JFK BUT YOU MUST FLY ORF JFKSo basically they a…
