Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

I usually read, listen and learn on this board but I wanted to post in this case. I just heard that we lost a Fighter Pilot last night, Johnny Alison passed away at the age of 99. I was lucky enough to have talked to him a number of times when I worked for the Air Force Assoc. Listened to him speak at last September's convention and I was always impressed by his memory and sharp as a tack demeanor. He was a pilot, and I mean that in the big sense of the word. One of those guys who understood flying and seemed to be able to just crawl in a cockpit and fly just about anything with wings ... and do it well. He was one of those guys that walked into a room and you just kne…

Not sure how many of y’all have seen the documentary about John. It’s well worth the watch. He’s always been my favorite comedy actor with Uncle Buck being the pinnacle (filled with heart warming sap at times but plenty of good humor too). He was a big guy but from the movie it appears his heart for others was even bigger. If you have Amazon its available there.

A group of roomates want to split a house purchase at a new location. 2-3 captains can get approved for a $1 mil+ mortgage (7 bedroom mansion). Rent out a couple rooms, and you're more than breaking even in equity once the house is sold in 5 years or so. Anyone do this before? Good idea? Pitfalls?

I need help thinking of my retaliation against the guys in my class next week. I received the "tool" award this week during my fourth week at UPT. Basically, the class presented a case for me because of comments I made about the tuna fish I ate and talked about. When I referred to my "tuna" and the way it "smelled," you can just IMAGINE what that did for me. Yes I am a female. Yeah, never living that comment down. Even though I rocked my solo and there were other guys who did some really stupid things on their solos, I still get the "tool" award for my comment. Soooo- I have to carry around a big metal wrench with a chain on it all next week and they have to steal i…

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year …

This caught me as a sad commentary on the future of Afghanistan. Karzai: "If there is no peace, then this agreement will bring misfortune to Afghanistan," he said. "Peace is our precondition. America should bring us peace and then we will sign it." https://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/24/afghanistan-us-karzai-idUSL4N0J905P20131124 I scold my 3 year old son for shirking personal responsibility... Think someone will scold Karzai for the same?

As a friend said "Like putting Sandusky in charge of the Boy Scouts." GUEST OPINION by Don Bendell JOHN KERRY FOR SECDEF? HELL NO! On February 2, 2011, I fell off a ladder landing on a steel fence in below-zero weather, fracturing my back, a rib, and got a minor concussion as well as a subdural hematoma, a brain bleed. Then, last fall I fell off the top of another ladder in my barn and severely bruised my hip, thigh, and a rib. Eight years ago, I wrote about my wife having rotator cuff surgery, getting an infection, and having to be cut in the same scar and operated on again. Just thinking about such pain and facing traumatic memories like those, makes me cringe. …

  19. Haven't seen this posted here yet - here's the article in the WSJ. And the Chinese media posting photos of the great leader. Reminds me of the Iranian state media posting the Onion article on Ahmadinejads vs Obamas popularity. Good stuff... although this is my all time favorite Onion article.

Just ran across this story via a few different news outlets - appears to be legit. It's based on a letter written to the Elliot.Org website about a pilot who simply "Did the right thing." Teaser bit: ...In LAX, the lines to both check a bag and get through security were exceptional. He got to the airport two hours early and was still late getting to his plane. Every step of the way, he’s on the verge of tears and trying to get assistance from both TSA and Southwest employees to get to his plane on time. According to him, everyone he talked to couldn’t have cared less. When he was done with security, he grabbed his computer bag, shoes and belt and ran to his…

Although this no longer applies to me, I got a copy anyway... What, having your finger up your nose (or head up your ass) is not prohibited? Apparantly not! The service medley thing on Fridays is also a new one on me. They actually expect folks in uniform to stand at attention under the full onslaught of the southcentral Texas summertime sun while they play the service medley? Well, sorry guys, I will be the civilian that walks around you and keeps on trucking. Everytime I get another email like this, I am a little more happier that I retired three years ago. Cheers! M2
