Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

I just had my AFSC drop and although I received 38F1 (Force Support Officer ), I have a lot of bases to choose from. There are very few bases that I can't be assigned to, so with that what are the best bases for a single Lt to be assigned to? Not that it matters what I request anyways... I was thinking in this order: Hickam (long shot?) Vandenburg Travis Charleston Aviono Incirlik

https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2012/02/military-3-star-presentation-reference-god-021712/ My $.02 is that people should be doing the best the can etc. because it's their job and their supporting a mission, NOT because it is in the best interest of their god/religious beliefs... I know this could be a volatile one, but I'm looking for thoughts.

  4. https://www.nypost.co...CRfOyJhODIuCcfM The New York Post needs to fire their research department, since everybody knows "per diem" is from the Latin "to pay for hookers and booze." Also, they should never, ever send any of their intrepid reporters on assignment to Pattaya or Angeles City.

So the douche was an ex-USAF type who was Court Martialed and discharged. Of course he was using an AR-15...let the politicization begin. For those with CCWs how often are you carrying? I am to the point I feel naked without mine, even at my son's soccer practice.

I just got back from Christmas vacation visiting family in Texas. My wife and I loaded up the car with the kids to make the 20 hour drive. I couldn't get over how much people in CA suck at driving on highways! Do people not know that the left lane is for passing, not cruising. The speed limit on I-5 is 70, and I was only averaging 60 because of all the morons in the left lane. That has to be one of my biggest pet peaves on the road. I also recently flew commercially and couldn't get over just how rude the f-ing TSA security folks are. This one chick with tight ass pants, creating a muffintop-like effect with her love handles, told me "Take off your jacket!" No…

Most of you guys on here have been to quite a few places, so I was hoping for some drops on good places to check out to live (throw in some good boobie tassle locations as well if you dont mind) Im looking to stay as close as I can to the Carswell JRB as I am going to hangin around the 457th on a regular basis. DFW Good place to be? yes? no? I'd like to know what to expect besides horrible traffic and lots of (insert explicitive here) longhorn fans..... Thanks Gents Cheers -summers

Link So the generals in all of the infinite wisdom spent 10 months choosing new motto for the Air Force, that was already chosen for them over 20 years ago. Guess there's nothing better to do with this war going on and all. My favorite part of the article: 20 bucks says that in 10 years we will have another motto.

It rips me apart to post this, Matmacwc flew west peacefully Christmas morning after a long fight with cancer. He bravely fought it to the end. He was truly a good man and a great fighter pilot. If your inclined to pray please pass a few on to his family. Nickle on the grass my friend. 🍺

This one was too funny and well written not to pass on to the rest of the baseops.net communuty. This could probably go in the "Leadership at the Deid" thread, or even the "I Hate Reflective Belts" thread, but since it is from Iraq and deals with combat showers, I figgered I'd piss the mods off and start a new thread for it. Names obscured to protect the innocent.

In late 1966, a new threat was appearing to our Airmen serving in Vietnam with the North's introduction of the then state-of-the-art Soviet MiG-21 Fishbed. The MiG's had used slash and run attacks to which they were well suited, to avoid the air-to-air armed Phantom fighters and to press their attacks against the heavily bomb-laden F-105's. They scored their first kill in October of 1966 and in December had shot down two attacking F-105 Thunderchiefs. More importantly though, the small number of MiG's, being able to carefully pick their battles, and operating from the safety of airfields that the US military was not allowed to attack, caused 20% of all strike sorties to j…

Ok, so even though I've been to the OPS bar a time or two, I've never had the pills to ask, "what's the deal with shooting Jeremiah Weed?" Why is that the poison of choice? is there a story to it, or is it just because. Thanks for educatin' RK

I know there are quite a few witty/creative individuals on this forum...and I am not one of them! I need help coming up with a name for a PIT crash pad I purchased down in Cibolo TX (Randolph AFB). Here is the deal! I bought this brand new 4 bdrm home and have spent over $20K on furnishing this place like a luxury hotel. Here is the premise....I have stayed at Randolph's billeting several times and admit it's not too bad for a short-term stay, but lacks the comforts of a home for long-term use. I am trying to provide a better option for single dudes wishing to stay off base while going through PIT training but at the same rate as billeting ($27 per night). I will ha…

Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Congo. I'll bet that's a fun deployment... I'm sure that there's a strategic political "big picture" reason that this makes sense, but somehow I see more "bad things" than "good things" coming from this. On the good side though: Bet that's some good stuff.

Happy New Year gents! I have been trying to figure out for the past month whether I should opt in to the new retirement system or not. I have a sort of nonstandard situation, which I'll explain, so finance at my base has no fricking clue and I haven't found anyone in the same boat as me to compare notes with. I know many of you guys are financially way smarter than I am so maybe you can help me figure this out. OK here's what I'm working with. I'm an O-3 commissioned in June 2013, but I was enlisted in the Army reserve for several years before that. My reserve time got me 7 good years towards a reserve retirement, and a few hundred AD days. So…

In a recent thread I ran across someone talking about great spit flying in a miniseries called "Piece of Cake." I grabbed it off of netflix to my surprise and in fact it really is wonderful. There's some great formation stuff, as well as a Spit flying under a cobblestone bridge with about ten feet on either side. I hadn't thought there was a good flying flick that I hadn't come across. I don't want the obvious ones. I want more of the "Only Angels Have Wings," "A Guy Named Joe," and "Towards the Unknown" type films. I just discovered "The War Lover" with Steve McQueen which is a must see for you World War Two buffs. Let's hear em! Cheers! -Stuck

Honestly, Business Insider isn't good for much else than clickbait "news" articles. However, this article piqued my interest. In a scenario like they outlined? I'd say they're right. But a full-on insurrection across the entire US? I think it would be a fractured mess. In the wake of the Turkey coup, such a scenario is just interesting to think about. To be clear, I am in no way advocating any action... Just a fun mental exercise. Any thoughts? https://www.businessinsider.com/us-military-armed-rebellion-2016-8

Anyone seen the new Airman magazine, the one titled 'The Air Force at 60'? Look at page 6, at top. Verbatim... Yep, three l's in "Billy"...I guess it's not like he is well-known in USAF history! And page 11... The correct spelling of Gen McAuliffe's name is with a capital A. He is attributed for the well-known reply of “Nuts” at Bastogne. Considering that those who put this little tribute together probably scored MSMs for their efforts, you'd think they would have spent a little time proofreading the damn thing! I found both of these errors within the first minute of looking through it. Cheers! M2

  25. Anybody seen this yet? Read the link to the letter in the article. AF times article I see how the zookeeper takes care of things: “We’ve had individuals injured downtown, having had to go to an emergency room or having been victims of criminal activity,” he said. “Sometimes it could be wrong place, wrong time. Sometimes it could be a bad decision.” What sizeable American city does not have these things happening?
