Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

As many as 10,000 airmen could be using smart phones on the job in the next year if the Air Force gets the money to buy them, according to a contractor on the project. Now everyone can have an iPhone to go with their personal 50" LCD. What an enormous waste of tax payer dollars.

Sad story. Weather at the time was winds calm 1/8-1/4 SM vis and VV001. They hit high tension power lines estimated to be ~100' AGL. Parts of the a/c crashed into a daycare and some other things...no one on the ground injured fortunately. Knocked out power for the entire city pretty much all day. No idea what would possess someone to t/o with that weather in a Cessna 310. Are civilian pilots even required to meet IFR climb gradients OEI? 3. What would be the outcome if a situation similar to this occurred in the modern Air Force? Wayne Hague always wondered whatever happened to the pilot whose crippled plane he refueled and escorted to safety over North Vietnam in 1967. Ron Catton always wondered about that pilot who kept him from having to bail out of his F-4C Phantom fighter and into a suite at the "Hanoi Hilton," the nickname for an infamous North Vietnamese prison. https://afthunderbirds.com/site/show-season/ "The implementation of across-the-board cuts in federal spending has caused the curtailment of the Thunderbirds 2013 show schedule. Effective April 1, all of the team’s performances have been cancelled. The team still plans to perform at the Titusville, Fla., air show March 23-24." I hope this happens to Tops in Blue and all the other "morale" functions considering the Thunderbirds reach more people than any military band.

The dude is 7-1 since taking over and all but one of those wins have been in dramatic fashion. No doubt the Denver defense is playing great and their special teams play has been lights out, but what is your opinion on Tebow?

Reading the Air Force AMN/NCO/SNCO page on Facebook is both comedy gold and shocking at some of the BS so called leaders are doing. In the latest installment when have warrant-less phone searches en mass.

I've never paid attention to Kern's publications, and I have little knowledge of him. I seem to recall from past posts that there are some that do not agree with his opinions, especially in the single-pilot regime. I am considering him as a guest speaker for an event and would like your opinions if you have seen him talk/present. Thanks.

  11. This luggage tag, presumably owned by "Viper Driver Tweak" was found by an associate of mine at the aeropuerto in Erie, PA. It is currently being held hostage by the Swedish Bikini Team, who are threatening to suffocate it with their boobs and/or thighs if ransom demands for its return are not met. If you know Tweak, and he cares enough about this $15 bag tag to save it from certain death from overexposure to soft, delicious Nordic flesh, contact me to help arrange to get it back. Photos/video of the bag tag torture threats unavailable at this time.

Anyone care to explain what this is all about? Just by looking at the men you can tell that they can't dance. And is the chick in the bottom right corner actually a bloke? And while we're at it, anyone fancy starting up a caption competition?

https://www.cnn.com/2014/12/10/world/senate-torture-report-world-reaction/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 Anyone want to touch this one? My preliminary thoughts: If true, I'm disturbed that we would stoop to this level. It also guarantees that no captured U.S. citizen will be treated even semi-humanely when captured for a long time. OTOH, if it gave us good intel to get some bad guys, then more power to 'em. Additionally: Anyone notice that the two Dr's running the camps were the ones who designed USAF SERE school?

Hey guys! I am going to be starting UNT at Little Rock sometime this year for slicks. I could not be happier and I am super-stoked about the prospect of low levels with NVGs or dropping stone cold killers into dark fields. However, I do not want to stay C-130s throughout my entire career and would like to see other USAF airframes. I loved the WSO portions of my training and Id like to be in the back of an F-15E or a B-1 one day. I definitely don't want to cross-train to UPT. Any thoughts on what rules and requirements there are for someone trying to switch their airframes say 2.5-3 years in?

So obviously there are dudes living around the world and flying around the world here. I figured we should list our favorite cities and why, maybe someone gets a good idea. I'll go first... If you're single, go to Finland. Now. Unless you hate tall smoking hot blondes who think Americans are a commodity. I went a couple weeks ago and every single bar I walked into someone said "are you American? What the f are you doing in Helsinki? Let's have a shot!" The stereotype that Fins are quiet, reserved, and keep to themselves I found to be absolutely untrue. Recommend going in the summer...it's light out from 3:00am until 2:00am or so. I imagine the winter is about the …

Does anyone else have one not showing up on mypay? I have one for every year I've been in the AF other than 2015. I contacted two finance offices today and the only information I've been able to get is that "all tax documents are ready". No one can explain why there isn't one. I don't know if it's a mistake or if it's all 0's, so the system didn't make one. I went on multiple TDYs, so I'd think there would be something on it. Could it be for only DITY moves? I think 2015 might be the only year I haven't PCS'd.

I just got back from Christmas vacation visiting family in Texas. My wife and I loaded up the car with the kids to make the 20 hour drive. I couldn't get over how much people in CA suck at driving on highways! Do people not know that the left lane is for passing, not cruising. The speed limit on I-5 is 70, and I was only averaging 60 because of all the morons in the left lane. That has to be one of my biggest pet peaves on the road. I also recently flew commercially and couldn't get over just how rude the f-ing TSA security folks are. This one chick with tight ass pants, creating a muffintop-like effect with her love handles, told me "Take off your jacket!" No…

Just thought I'd post this note. I've been retired from the AF since 1993 and use TriCare as a suppliment to Medicare. The hospital in my community of 127,000 people, advised last month that as of April 1st 2013, they will no longer accept TriCare insurance. Just another indicator of things to come. Ltc. JW

  25. Got an email today saying that the new military rate for TUI is $300 per credit hour. Tuition assistance is only paying $250. Anyone think that the Tuition Assistance is going to get increased to match their new tuition? I started TUI only because it wasn't going to cost me anything out of pocket and now being half way through I am going to be stuck paying for this POS degree.
