Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by mcmdad50,

I am currently a sophomore in college, and will have 60 credits completed in May. I want to be an ANG pilot. Is it too early to start talking to units? If not, how do I go about contacting them?

So I have a package in with the AD Officer board and I really want to chase the manned pilot position but am not sure I can lock down pilot. If allowable, I would decline any other position and press for an ANG unit (wouldn't be eligible for AFRC). Guard has been becoming more and more appealing to me. I have a couple of questions: 1) Is it worth it to go for an instrument / multi rating? (I already have my PPL) 2) How much did your PCSM help in an interview? (99 PSCM, 98 Pilot) 3) I will be putting on 0-2 in June (2 of 4 yr commitment finished) and am curious how the timeline works going from AD to Guard. Can I even apply to current slots? How would it cur…

  3. If you weren't AGR or technician, and had some type of job you worked either part time or "full" time, what did you do? Any non-flying jobs? Just trying to get an idea of what some guys did that was forgiving for their mil obligation in case i don't end up on some sort of full time status. Thanks!

  4. Started by Trogdor,

So, my local AFRC has not been much help because I thought going AD to guard made you eligible for TAMP? I thought a briefer in my TAPS class said I was, but that was five months ago, and I found this is the quote straight from the Tricare website: "Separating from regular active duty service and agree to become a member of the Selected Reserve of a Reserve Component. The Service member must become a Selected Reservist the day immediately following release from regular active duty service to qualify. " However, the main AFRC TAPS guy had me reference a three letter code on my sep orders, which he told me that it indicated I was not eligible. Is this three let…

A little bit about me. I have always wanted to join the Reserves or ANG as a pilot. Growing up i never thought it to be possible since i was trying to chase after a career in architecture. Well after some conversation with a friend of mine from high school who is a C-5 pilot and a flight instructor for the Air Force he told me i still have a chance. Currently i am in the process of taking may ARE exams to become a licensed architect while doing all necessary items to obtain a flying position with the Reserves or ANG as a C-17 or C-130 pilot. I would like advice on how to increase my chances for such a position in a competitive market even with a pilot shortage. I fe…

  6. I am a former C-130 nav and Army CH-47D pilot. I have been sitting in staff job for the last five years and would like to get back into flying. Since the Fixed Wing Qualification course was cancelled in 2012, I am only limited helicopters in the USAF. Does anyone know about any ANG/Reserve HH-60 units willing to accept out-of-state commuters?

First off, I want to say thanks to everyone whom has contributed to this forum. Awesome resource. Second, hoping for a little help/guidance. Background: Currently a CW2 in the ARNG with 800 hours in the UH-60, (PC/AMC) looking to make the transfer to AF Reserves/ANG. I want to stay Rotary Wing; on my last deployment I did some MEDEVAC chase stuff, really enjoyed the mission. Right now I work as a Faculty Research Engineer in Ga. Have an undergrad in Mech Engineering, grad in Aeronautics, starting PhD in Mech Engineering in 2019 at the University I work for (I can defer if needed). I spoke to a reserve recruiter, basically told me to pound sand. The ANG recruiter told me m…

I recently got an email stating I've been added to an upcoming RCOT class. I thought that was just for incoming medical professionals, and I'm going in as a non-prior sponsored by a Reserve unit to go to UPT. Does anyone have any further information??

Fellas, I am an interservice transfer from the Army, already a qualified H60 driver, post command, 3 tours, etc. I did not do well on my AFOQT, I thought I had studied to an appropriate level, quite frankly the math portion surprised me a little more than I was prepared for and I embarrassingly, I choked in the ambush and I scored a whopping 5 in quantitative. Scores: Pilot: 78 Nav: 62 ACAD AP: 25 Verbal: 64 Q: 5 I am pretty embarrassed to talk about this, but humility in failure is important and I have learned a very hard lesson these past few days. So I am going to set up a retest, and go forth and study my ass off and be ready to get aft…

  10. I am in the process of applying and was wondering if there are any units that specifically want to remain with the F-15 in the future. I realize one can't afford to be picky in applying, so I'm shot gunning apps to any fighter unit I can stand to live at that gives me the best ability to go home and spend time with family. A recent conversation with a pilot in a C unit told me they were indifferent to the -35 or new 15s. I think it would be cool however to fly the jet that was on posters hung in my room growing up, and it may be beneficial to invest more time in visiting those particular units. This thread is not intended to turn into a -35 vs -15 debate, there is a seper…

  11. Not sure if this is possible but wanted to see if anyone knew- I was hired by an ANG squadron a little over a year ago. FC1 and all of that has been done for some time and was expecting April 1 OTS, then expected July 30 when I didn't get April, and haven't received anything on that. The next dates aren't til October. I would request orders to go work full time at my hiring unit until training, but I currently live in another state, and also have a lease until October, as well as an SO who can't yet leave her job. So my question is- would it be possible for me as an E3 awaiting OTS and UPT dates, to try to get orders/work at the AF Reserve airlift base in my cur…

  12. Anyone ever done this? I’ve heard rumors it’s a thing but have zero experience or knowledge about it. Guess you could say I’m ignorant. Any one heard or experienced it or know of someone who has?

Gentlemen, As some of you know, the guard slung out some rapid fire $20k cash bonuses for DSG pilots this year, and are now trying to recoup them based on “erroneous NGB/A1 guidance” about eligibility. The paragraph referenced implies that this is about some sort of service commitment to the guard post UPT. I’ve heard this “10-year commitment” mentioned before, but have never seen any sort of formal guidance or signed anything related to a service commitment. Can anyone point me to more info? Thanks. Has anyone tried for a 2 year TIG waiver for reserve retirement recently?

  16. Started by Dangerzone,

Reached out to a few reserve units to ask about pilot openings or their next UPT board and through the course of the convo and exchanging niceties they essentially gave it to me straight saying the previous AFRC board selected 5 of the 70 fully qualified and vetted applicants ~10%. They mentioned they’d sponsor me no problem but it doesn’t really mean anything because the selection rate is so low due to AD taking back some UPT spots, the current backlog of applicants, and the UPT slots are going to the flying units that are under manned. Just seems like going Reserve these days is a pretty bleak prospect with all the variability. Think this is an isolated issue o…

Hello everyone, In March I was hired with a unit and I'm in the middle of all the processing paperwork. I've gone to MEPS for them, swore in, and I'm in the middle of the background check. I've applied to a few units and my top choice was delayed a little but I just got notice that my top unit is offering me a job. It's the airframe and mission I want and it's where my family lives. The other unit is a bit far. I really want my top choice unit obviously as that is what would work best for me but I'm unsure how to proceed. My top unit knows I've already been hired at another unit but I'm unsure how to explain this to the unit that I was already hired at. Have other pe…

  18. Asking in regards to heavies. After going on drill status, what’s the longest amount of time you can regularly be away from the squadron? Is a month on/month off schedule (or 2 weeks on/off like ACME) possible? Not trying to game the system for BAH or anything, but if this sort of schedule was possible it would allow much greater freedom of living location. Thanks!

Wondering a bit about what career opportunities get closed if you go Guard rather than Active Duty. Are some of the items below still possible if you are in the Guard? - Exchange tour (Navy or foreign) - Test Pilot School - Thunderbirds/Demo Team - Overseas assignment (Europe, Korea, Japan) - Pentagon assignment One of the drawbacks I see to the Guard is being based out of the same place and doing the same thing for 20 years. Is being interested in some of the items above enough to consider Active Duty over the Guard?

  21. Started by FlyingEventually,

I'm looking to join the ANG in college and fly (hopefully) after I get my degree. I'm still in high school and working on my PPL and plan on majoring in Professional Aviation in college. I'm going to do everything in my power to make myself as competitive as I can be (high GPA/PCSM, leadership roles etc.) but I was wondering just how much joining early would benefit me later down the road? I plan on enlisting as a crew chief to work as close as I can to pilots. Thanks for the help.

  23. Hello to all. First off thanks to all of those on here who share a plethora of helpful information, it's truly helpful to someone on the outside of this community looking for a way into it. Before I ask this question, I have used the search function, google, and a bunch of other resources and still can't find this answer.... Is it possible for someone to become an RPA pilot in the ANG/AFR and then apply to an ANG/AFR unit in hopes of getting a pilot slot after serving time in an RPA unit? (I believe from this forum the minimum is 2.5 year commitment). I can't find any info what so ever so any helpful answers are sincerely appreciated. -RANDOMDUDE

  25. I'm a former USAF active duty O-3 considering a slot in my state's Army National Guard unit. I separated at four years, with another four on my DD-214 for my MSO in the IRR. Can someone elaborate on the process to be pulled out of USAF IRR and placed in the Army Guard? Is it similar to the process that would occur if I decided to join an Air Reserve or Air Guard unit?
