Is it true the 17's have sticks instead of yokes? Anybody know where to find some cool cockpit photos (of anything non-civilian)?

Hey all - I've been on hold with the total force call center for 45 minutes now, so I figure it wouldn't hurt to reach out to you fine folks and see if someone here has the answer I need. I understand that if I were to transfer my benefits today, I would have to commit to another 4 years of service. I am eligible to retire in January 2021, and I was wondering if they'd make me extend my service beyond that date?

A P-8 Poseidon slid off the runway and into the water in Hawaii, possibly due to WX. No injuries reported and from the photos the damage looks minimal, but an inspection might reveal a hull loss if there is major damage to the MLG trunnions and engine pylons and wing spars.

  6. Serious question here, not looking to start a pissing contest. I know there’s at least a couple people on this forum who have experience in both. Which was generally “more difficult” and what made it so? Or were some parts of one easier in the other and vice versa?

Long read... But well worth it. "The most curious thing about our four defeats in Fourth Generation WarLebanon, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistanis the utter silence in the American officer corps. Defeat in Vietnam bred a generation of military reformers Today, the landscape is barren. Not a military voice is heard calling for thoughtful, substantive change. Just more money, please."

  11. Some guy in California was just convicted and sentenced to 30 months for lasing aircraft. https://edition.cnn.c...l?iref=obinsite We'll see if he actually serves any of that time, though. I'm sure some slick lawyers are lining up to make a name for themselves appealing the conviction pro bono.

What's the deal with the Huey emergency landing up at Minot? Slow news time? Typically you don't read about them and no fatalities still leaves a lot to the imagination: https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2013/02/ap-minot-huey-makes-emergency-landing-north-dakota-022513/

  14. This is pretty cool... https://www.startribune.com/local/230375891.html SUPERIOR, Wis. — Two planes carrying skydivers collided in midair Saturday evening in far northwest Wisconsin, but no major injuries were reported. Mike Robinson, an instructor and safety adviser for Skydive Superior, said he and 10 others escaped relatively unharmed after one plane crashed into the other during what he said was a common tandem formation. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig said the collision occurred about 6 p.m. at about 12,000 feet. Robinson said he and four others were preparing to jump from the lead plane with the trailing plane hit their craf…

  16. New O-5 here with lots of C-5 and airline time and bad habits going to Altus early next year and transitioning to the C-17. Do any of you C-5 guys that have transitioned have any thoughts on how to make it easier? What's important to study? I've heard all the horror stories about back side flying. How's Barney behind the tanker? Is the HUDD wierd to get used to? NVGs? Assaults? I liked the C-5, but it was pretty much big concrete to big concrete. I'll sit back with a J/C and read your replies. Bad week for aviation. Destruction at Sun n' Fun, the Southwest drop-top, and now Gulfstream has lost a G650 and four flight test crewmembers. Link Kent Crenshaw, Gulfstream's Chief Test Pilot, was a former CC of the 6519th Test SQ (now the 419th FLTS at Edwards), the B-2 Chief Test Pilot for Northrop Grumman, a BUFF pilot in Vietnam, and a laundry list of other quals and accomplishments. Vivan Ragusa was a former USN test pilot who flew the X-31.

  18. What happened to the JQP posts about 18 AF and toxic leadership? I used the search function and it showed in the results, but then the link returned an error code for not found. I wasn't really looking for it, but noticed it was missing. Is it an error or was it removed intentionally? Edit: The pilot's detainment post from the Sq Bar was also removed. Is it a permanent suspension or a 2-min penalty?

  19. Another baseops guy asked me to share my experience/knowledge of the Career Skills Program. If you're looking to get out early and get setup as you transition to the civilian world the CSP is definitely a great alternative to Palace Chase and a lot less bureaucracy. Once you have a date of separation in the system you can apply for the CSP but at a minimum you have to apply 30 days prior to when you want to start. You can do the CSP for up to 180 days. You will work for a civilian company as an unpaid intern (some other unpaid options available too) while getting all your normal pay and benefits from the AF. Basically you're on PTDY to anywhere you want (and your CC…

I asked C-21 Pilot about the mission and lifestyle of a C-21 pilot and this is the informative response I got...Enjoy! ------------------------------------------------ The C-21 is essentially a Learjet 35A. There are some minor differences, and they are all up in the cockpit. The plane was bought from Gates Lear back in 1984 (all models are 1984). The C-21 has a few mods that stock Lear 35s won't have. They all have a Universal MFD that displays nav data, TCAS targets, wx radar and terrain/TAWS data. They also have an EVSI that displays TCAS climb information as well as TCAS traffic. The C-21 has a Universal UNS-1B flight management system that, in my opinion, is muc…

  21. Hi guys, I've applied to 2 guard units so far and no luck...but going to keep trying for now. If I didn't have a good paying job I would totally apply for AD. I know it is difficult to get into pilot training no matter how you go about it, but I imagine it would be easier to get picked up if you went the AD route instead of the guard units. I'm considering going AD for a few other reasons. Browsing through this forum I have read account of AD pilots who have just had an absolute blast in their AF careers. They got to fly numerous different airframes and traveled to all sorts of interesting places. Along with that they work with a great group of guys and form…

I'm currently in pilot training and need help deciding what track I should consider. Ever since I wanted to be a pilot, my dream aircraft was the C-17. After flying the Tweet, getting over airsickness , and doing extremely well, I've become uncertain as to what I ultimately want to fly. My ego is telling me to go with fighters, my wife and kid have me leaning towards heavies. Any advice concerning the life of a fighter and heavy pilot would be great.

  25. Started by Johntsunami,

I'm a current AMC dude on the VML this cycle. I love my current airframe but I do not love how much I've been on the road this assignment and I'm looking to spend more time at home. I'm looking for input from any current Laughlin/Vance/Columbus IPs to share their qualities of life. How often you fly per week and typical/expected work hours. I have bros in my squadron who were former UPT IPs and I have spoken with them but I would like to hear from current IPs, if able. Not sure if it's still a thrash implementing the 2.5 syllabus or if it's a somewhat predictable work schedule at all now. Thanks.
