Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

‘You are the reason I drink’ — Airmen bid adieu to decrepit aircraft dubbed ‘Lucifer’s Chariot’ “four terrible and terrifying years that aged me well beyond where I should be.” “You are the reason I live to forget.” “582, you’re a real nasty lady,” said Markham. “I had some great memories, but most of them involved getting off the aircraft and sprinting away from you.”

  2. This morning, I was reading an interesting Kellogg study on military service and its influence on CEOs (https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/faculty/benmelech/html/BenmelechPapers/MilitaryCEOs.pdf). As I start planning for my enroute descent to retirement (it's inevitable at some point), I'm wondering what experiences and advice the grey beards have for the transition. The airlines thread is awesome, but that's not the life for everyone. What other options are out there for a pilot with some staff stink, a TS, and an online MBA?

Open invite to merge this with the "Things to Listen to While Drunk on BO" thread...but here's the equipment angle. Does anyone here have a sweet stereo setup? Thinking about ditching my 2000's era 5.1 stuff and buying some restored vintage equipment for a 2.1 setup. Or, after 10 years and 1500+ hours of jet noise and another 10-20 to go, should I even bother?

Hey guys, this is my first post. I just transferred to the Air Force Academy after doing some civilian flying. I have about 240 hours (part 61 and 141) and it is all on paper logs. I have been thinking of changing over to an electronic logbook program (I would still maintain the paper logbook for checkrides and a backup. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a program that is good at tracking military and civilian hours. I just got on the flying team here and will be flying a bit in T-41s and T-51s and hopefully will get a pilot slot and I want a program that will be flexible enough to handle all my flights. Here are some things that I would like: …

  7. "Perhaps the best Air Force recruiting commercial in history was posted to social media on Monday, but the Air Force recruiting service had nothing to do with its creation. The 14-second long video shows a pair of pilots making their way down the flight line at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, flight-suited up and carrying their helmet bags. The thing is, one of them is not walking: he’s rolling on a skateboard while holding what looks to be a cell phone to his ear..." https://taskandpurpose.com/mandatory-fun/air-force-pilot-skateboard-flightline/ 1504528583_AirForceamnncosncoonFacebookWatch.mp4

So I’ve tried TSP customer service, DFAS and myPers and nobody can explain to me how to allocate past the $20,500 for 2022. I don’t even know how many months I need to be overseas to max it, or if it’s prorated depending on how many months you spend overseas in a calendar year. Has anyone done this and if so how much can I contribute and how many months do I need to be overseas? What happens if I exceed the limits? Once I max the Roth TSP do I need to then reallocate into the traditional TSP or if I go a penny over the 20,500 allotment does it lock it out the traditional TSP? after hours on the phone I have no answers.

Am I not understanding this correctly? I was just browsing the 2022 tax brackets and found it terrible that in the 35% and 37% bracket married couples are taxed far more harshly than those who are single. Bracket / Single / Married Filing Jointly 35% $215,950 to $539,900 $431,900 to $647,850 37% $539,900 or more $647,850 or more So two people who live together and share a life together, but are not married can make $1,079,7999 together and not enter the 37% tax bracket. Yet at $647,850 a married couple enters the 37% tax bracket? Is that correc…

Absolute carnage at the holiday parade. Kind of crazy that in this day and age we have to speculate a terror attack, revenge for the Rittenhouse verdict or a horrible DUI.

Odd request... When you go into a classified briefing room, there's usually a storage bin into which many people put their cell phones before they enter the room. Most of the ones I've seen are poorly designed. If you have a picture of a wall-mounted unit that is exceptionally well designed, would you send me a link to where you got it, or at least a photo of it with the dimensions of the storage slots.

Hey guys, has anyone had to PCS with multiple cars? I am pcs'ing to Florida in a couple months and I have two cars. I will be there for about four months, then I'm PCS'ing to the West coast. I looked into the cost of shipping a car, but it would be about $1600 combined for both PCS's and I have no idea how trustworthy and safe shipping companies actually are. Has anyone found a good way to move cars around during PCS's and has anyone had experience using shipping companies to move their cars? Good, bad, and any scratches/extra miles on them? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

  20. In the days after 9/11 it became apparent we had problems dealing with low slow flyers. Through the years there have been several suggestions on how to deal with the issue. For a while it was even suggested the Light Attack fleet would offer a solution. Over the past few weeks there have been NUMEROUS TFR violations around the county and Live ATC has recorded many of the interactions. I listened to a few the past few days and it appears we still have issues. Without ATC we would have a very difficult time finding and in some cases maintaining contact.

and I'm her crew chief. She does most of the weed eating/mowing around our house. The thing is I have to string the weed eater, mix the fuel, crank it up, tune it up, then hand it to her so she can start weed eating. I should give her a silk scarf to wear.

What's going on with this "news" circulating around decentralized video platforms about some of the best pilots in the Air Force quitting on refusal to get the vax? Some of the F-22 fighters and a B-52 crew. I think this is video that started it: https://www.bitchute.com/video/jUM7R4Z0hELi/ Then saw it on infowars. But there doesn't seem to be any verification.

  23. Guys, the military “hero” / “thank you for your service” / “veteran” culture has jumped the shark. At the airport today waiting to board, and the Delta gate agent announces “anyone w a active duty military ID can now preboard”. Damn near 25 people made their way up to the gate...including a brand new 2LT RPA pipeline student wearing his flight suit (very tacky). Now it’s not these individuals fault they took advantage of Delta offering them early boarding. But as military members we need to think of what that’s doing to the general public’s perception of its military. If I’m a first class passenger I’m going to be slightly annoyed that some 19 year old dressed in cu…

Any of you heroes interested in starting a Baseops fantasy football league this year? I can handle the details as commish but would need at least 8-12 players to make it work. I’m thinking $25 buy in (flexible on that if we get a consensus) played via the Sleeper app. If interested reply here and I can DM the details.
