Squadron Bar
Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.
1 – Keep it civil
If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed. If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.
2 - Listen before you speak
A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."
Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force. Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.
3 – UTFSF
Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.
4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.
After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"
5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense
This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".
6 – No unpaid advertisements
Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed. Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum. For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Is this what my instructor meant about staying out of the fluffy clouds during UPT or is this considered VFR on top? From Eglin From Shaw:

Yesterday a pilot and his ATAC F-21 Kfir were lost in a crash at NAS Fallon, Nevada. The pilot was Carroll LeFon, a retired Navy Captain, fighter pilot, and military blogger - better known by his "nom de plume" - Neptunus Lex. I've read his blog for years, and had corresponded with him several times. Naval Aviation may have never had a better friend. Godspeed, Lex... From https://www.neptunuslex.com/

Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a tablet for some GA flying. I know there are a bunch of awesome apps, like Foreflight, for the Ipad, and I saw the post on here about the new Naviator app for the Android platforms. Most of everything I have seen has been positive for the apps, but do either of these really drive the purchase of a specific tablet? I will be primarily using it for private flying and that's my main reason for wanting to buy one. As of now, I'm looking at the Samsung Galaxy 2 Tablet and any of the various Ipads. Of course I want the new one with the retina display and a 64gb hard drive, but the price is pretty steep. Do you guys have any recommendati…

The biz jet community and the car makers especially are getting beat up pretty good about their use of corporate jets. Maybe if you are getting Gov't money, you shouldn't be using too many jets. However, Congress needs to take a close look at themselves. More than one person in the civilian chain has no problem requesting VIP acft to transport themselves around.

I will even buy you a beer. I did the search to no success, but this is always something I've wondered. Anybody know the story (or even a tall tale) about the origin of "him! him!" when somebody kicks it?

So here's a question: for the past few years the idea of retirement reform has been in play, with the caveat that anybody on active duty gets grandfathered (if they wish) in the current 20-year pension system. With both the HASC and SASC bills talking about changing some version of matching TSP contributions it looks like the writing's on the wall that within the next few years the traditional retirement won't be around for new accessions. So the question is, for individuals currently on active duty who transition to a Guard/Reserve component after any retirement legislation has been passed, can they stay in the current ARC retirement system (draw a pension at 60 ye…

I saw this on the NBC show "Rock Center" the other night and had never heard of this man. It was the story of Billy Fiske. He was an Olympic Gold Medalist in 1932 (Olympian in 1928) who also carried the flag in the opening ceremonies of the '32 games. He faked Canadian citizenship to fight for the RAF and was the first American born citizen to be killed in World War 2. 23 August 2014 will mark the 60th Anniversary of our mighty C-130 Hercules. Lockheed says they have a website to collect your Herk stories. I propose that if anyone has any Herk stories, post a few of them here. 10% Rule in effect unless your story starts with "This ain't no shit." Link to story with more links: C-130 Anniversary If someone doesn't like a story, too bad, piss off and go hate elsewhere. Out Edit, cause I ain't known for spellin months right.

What would be the outcome if a situation similar to this occurred in the modern Air Force? Wayne Hague always wondered whatever happened to the pilot whose crippled plane he refueled and escorted to safety over North Vietnam in 1967. Ron Catton always wondered about that pilot who kept him from having to bail out of his F-4C Phantom fighter and into a suite at the "Hanoi Hilton," the nickname for an infamous North Vietnamese prison. Does anyone have any experience / advice with AAFES car sales? Additionally do you get the same deal at Al Udeid / Bagram that you'd get at Kadena / Mildenhall (ie. is there an advantage buying it "in the shit?") Thanks!

So I am kinda bored and saw this on foxnews.com https://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,318932,00.html Hannah Montana Concert Winner Lied in Essay Describing Father's Death in Iraq Saturday , December 29, 2007 ADVERTISEMENT GARLAND, Texas — An essay that won a 6-year-old girl four tickets to a Hannah Montana concert began with the powerful line: "My daddy died this year in Iraq." While gripping, it was not true — and now the girl may lose her tickets after her mom acknowledged to contest organizers it was all a lie. The sponsor of the contest was Club Libby Lu, a Chicago-based store that sells clothes, accessories and games intended for young girl…

Everyone needs raise a glass for ClearedHot, who is celebrating a major milestone in his career today! Those who know him know what I am talking about, and the rest of you will just have to take my word for it; but it is a substantial achievement for any Air Force officer and I can think of no one more worthy than CH! CH, I wish I could have been there to celebrate with you, but my schedule just wouldn’t allow it. But I will toast your accomplishment this evening in line with Air Force traditions! Cheers! M2
