Police are on the search for a group of thugs/anarchists who surrounded and attacked an Air Force pilot in Olympia, Washington. The service member has not been identified but it has been confirmed that he is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The pilot came under attack when he was riding his motorcycle through downtown Olympia on Saturday night. According to the police the protestors surrounded him when they noticed that the pilot had two Confederate flags on the back of his motorcycle. After ripping the flags from the back of his bike they beat him with a bat and smashed a glass bottle over his head. They also attempted to knock his motorcycle to the ground while sp…

Hey guys I was just wondering what the rules are about going out of town for the weekend on Active Duty. In about 4 weeks I graduate and commission and then I'm off to ASBC on 29 May and then to Columbus for Casual on 14 July and then I start UPT 26 Feb 08. You see I'm thinking about getting into standup jetski racing and I was wondering if this would be possible with my career? I would basically like to attend races within 5-7 hours of my base occasionally on the weekends. It wouldn't be another career or something that I would be trying to make money at. It would just be a weekend hobby type of thing. What are the rules about going out of town for the weekend on …

Ok, so I decided to go after my dream and not think about money or anything like that. I am so excited to be an AF pilot, but what can pilots expect financially? I know about the pay charts and flight pay, but what can you count on making? If you stay in for 10 years where can you be financially? (Assuming that you are responsible and invest.) For 20 years and beyond where can you be? I've heard of officers investing well and retiring completely after 20 years with 1 million+ in the bank and a nice house. What's your take on all of that? Is flying for the airlines after you are done whether it's 10 or 20 years a good way to go? I don't care about being a huge …

All, Long time listener, first time caller. I've searched (and searched and searched) through this forum for while, but haven't quite found enough info to solve my little dilemma. I'm in nav training at Randolph, 3 weeks away from a/c drop, #1 in my class, and split 50/50 on B-52's or C-130's, specifically to Ramstein. I think I'd be thrilled with either mission, so "part" of my decision making does come down to what's better for my wife. She loves traveling and all that jazz, still unsettled by the ops tempo of flying, but I imagine every new AF wife is. Specific pros or cons to either assignment would be greatly appreciated. JSM

Who has some recent gouge about Hill/Ogden, etc? I've got a possible job opportunity there and need some vectors on where to narrow a house search. Looking for an area that doesn't have houses right on top of each other (aka decent yard size), near "things to do", outdoor activities like hiking, etc, and near good restaurants (cool locally owned places, not national chains). Quality of schools is not something to factor into my decision (no kids). Low crime area, and within say a 20 ish min drive to base. I don't want suburban boring. This could potentially be a long-term situation if it works out. North of base in Ogden? South of base anywhere? To the west?

Gunmen using silenced pistols shot dead a senior Iraqi general in Baghdad on Thursday, an official said, the latest in a spate of assassinations of top military and civilian officials. The killing of Brigadier General Mohammed Alaa Jassim was the fourth of a senior Iraqi official in the past week, with at least three others having narrowly escaped death in that time. Jassim, the deputy commander of the Iraqi air force's Al-Muthanna base in central Baghdad, was in his car on a busy thoroughfare in the Ghazaliyah neighbourhood in the capital's west when he was killed, an interior ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Not a good month or two …

I'd like a template of a lineup card for formation flying. Something from the T-38 or T-6 is probably the best for what I need, but I'll take anything. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. It needs to be editable. PM me for an email address to send it. Thank you.

White House aides insisted F-22 be removed from Obama speech venue When President Obama spoke to troops at Alaska's Elmendorf Air Force Base last month, the unit there parked a shiny new F-22 fighter plane in the hanger. But according to multiple sources, White House aides demanded the plane be changed to an older F-15 fighter because they didn't want Obama speaking in front of the F-22, a controversial program he fought hard to end. "White House aides actually made them remove the F-22-said they would not allow POTUS to be pictured with the F-22 in any way, shape, or form," one source close to the unit relayed. Stephen Lee, a public affairs officer at …

I'm sure some of you have came across this on the net but for those of you who haven't enjoy. I am glad they had more than 2 guys in the flight deck to keep up on the faults the computer was spitting out. I guess the Aussie term "Flat Out" is task saturated. Subject: A bad day on the A-380 ________________________________ 1. From a friend. Lots to things for this crew and their ground support team to think about and work on. Here are just SOME of the problems the QANTAS guys had in Singapore last week aboard QF32, in addition to the engine failure.... * massive fuel leak in the left mid fuel tank (the beast has 11 tan…

All right... I'm searching for the rule which allows distribution/possession/consumption on USAF Contract Commercial Aircraft. Example, a unit is deploying to location X - flying American Airlines Flt XX from a military base. Can we open a flask/bottle in the back? Folks are telling me we can...I need proof.

The Air Force MARS Phone Patch Net has been operational since the Vietnam War. Hundreds of patches daily were handled through the early 80’s when bases starting closing their MARS stations. Today the net is tasked to handle DoD patch requests in support of transports, tankers, bombers and other aircraft and ground units handling routine weather, ETA/Customs, maintenance, etc. calls as well as emergency support. Morale calls are still happily handled. For more information see the website below. In the fall of 2014 the Chiefs of AF & Army MARS approved joint operations with AF and AR MARS stations participating. Chief Air Force MARS has approved a re-d…

Some people get "medals" and then real people get real medals. https://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123139145 3/11/2009 - POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. (AFNS) -- Tears stood in Sue Rhyner's eyes as she talked about her son, who, in a ceremony March 10 here received the Air Force Cross, the highest military decoration awarded by the service, and a Purple Heart. Staff Sgt. Zachary Rhyner of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron from Pope Air Force Base, N.C., received the medal for uncommon valor during Operation Enduring Freedom before a crowd of hundreds dotted with combat controllers' red berets. The decoration is second only to the Medal of Honor, and is awarde…

I was a passenger on a cross country flight the other night, and happened to look out the window at just the right time to see the ISS whizzing by. It got me wondering whether pilots who fly often, especially just before sunrise or after sunset, see a lot of satellites.

I always wondered, when your actually active duty and your assigned to lets say an F-16D (2 seater). What if you wanted to give your brother or father a ride in the back with you. If they are healthy enough to pass the physical is this allowed?

Hi folks - So, this might sound a bit strange, but my recruiter *really* wants me to apply into the Bioenvironmental Engineering (BEE) program in the AF in addition to OTS (for pilot). I have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and he said my background doesn't matter - bioenvironmental vs electrical. I've search here and on Google, but can't seem to find anything on the BEE program except that you get commissioned as a Captain and have 4 weeks of initial training instead of 12 in the OTS. The big question that I cannot find the answer to is - if I sign up for BEE, will I then be able to apply for UPT once I'm already in the AF? Or said another way…
