General Discussion

Discuss general topics in the Military and Aviation. Please post pilot-selection & "how do I get a pilot slot" questions in their appropriate forums.

  1. Did a search but it didn't turn up anything specific for this... I'm in the NCR on a non-flying assignment (school). I got an email from the servicing HARM office at Andrews saying my physical would soon expire and that I would begin losing flight pay. The email was sent on the day my physical expired, which of course didn't leave me any time to get a new physical. I made the earliest possible appointment at my servicing flight med clinic (JBAB), which is in late Feb. Andrews HARM told me I will lose flight pay for the duration of time I am "disqualified" (about 3 weeks). They said there is no waiver process or really anything that can be done to avoid losin…

  2. Just a thought that popped up in my head with the AF being short on pilots and all. I mean, they already have the reserve units at UPT bases which helps but I'm sure there are plenty of qualified pilots out there who wouldn't mind being a civilian flight instructor for T-6s.

Does anybody know how this will affect civilian positions in military units?

We've had a few guys go from -10s to the E-4 in the past couple of years, and was wondering what life is like in the E-4. Can anyone here shed a little light? I'm just looking for the standard: quality of life, TDY rate, the mission, length of tour, etc. I'm guessing they do a fair amount of sitting alert. No joy on the search. Thanks for the help. Leavenworth doesn't provide him with the hormone therapy he requires, then they are going to sue. WTF?!? When did espionage carry such a light sentence and when did federal prison become Club Med? 13. Looks like Redux 2.0 to me... From the article: "A cost-saving option might be to offer active-duty troops full retirement benefits only after 30 years’ service with mandatory retirement at 40 years." Right and if the same high year tenure rules apply. A lot less officers and NCOs will be making it to full retirement... Here is how I think this will go... the DOD insitute the change and it will remain in effect for about 8-10 years - then whole "classes"or year groups of officers and NCOs will depart taking their valuable experience wit...h them. As a result, these classes will become so small that once again, the 20 yewar retirement will be reinstated, c…

  14. Hey folks. So I'm headed to UPT pretty soon and in the meantime I'm trying to plan ahead for the future. I'm an engineer by trade and for the last 10 years have been working in an office. I have no desire to have a full time office/desk gig ever in the future again, and I'm working on getting into some independent consulting (out of my house) on the side after training when I'm not doing Air Force stuff all the time. Just curious what other small businesses traditional reservists/guardsmen have to work on in their free time. I have seen a number of realtors and flight instructors, but I'm curious to see what else people have done or are doing and how successful its been. …

Does anyone know the convention that the USAF uses in its B-courses? I can't find any regulation or any other document that dictates how it is decided. For example 16-EBG at Luke or 15-BBH at Holloman. They aren't always the same even at the same base. Does anyone know what or how the letters are decided? Thank you for your time! Redshift

Hi, I'm a C-17 IP at CHS looking for a little gouge... to those currently at Little Rock AFB flying the 130J - they're searching Charleston for 2 C-17 Airdrop ACs to go fly the 130J...I understand from searching through a myriad of 130j posts on this forum that the training is for 6 months (fam/msn), and I've got a handle on what living in Little Rock is like for that time. My questions specifically though are ---> 1) Is the 130J operational and flying around the desert? (excuse my ignorance please...google and wikipedia just aren't cutting it these days) 2) If so, do the 130Js deploy as much as the 130Es out there currently? (ie. 4 on 4 off) 3) Finally, does anyo…

Wanted to start a thread to get some general information on the C-145. Just looking for the standard stuff about training pipeline, rotation schedule (dwell time), lifestyle, upgrade timelines, etc. Is the squadron mainly still guys that did the FID/rotary mission or is it becoming a sampling of other AFSOC platforms (& UPT studs)?

From Osan's FB page: UPDATE: After landing from a training mission, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot ejected from an F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 36th Fighter Squadron at approximately 5 p.m. The pilot was taken to the 51st Medical Group clinic and was listed in good condition. "We are relieved that our Mustang pilot ejected safely, and is now in the good hands of our medical team," said Col. Andrew Hansen, 51 Fighter Wing commander. "We are currently focused on thoroughly investigating the cause of this incident in order to minimize the chances of it happening again in the future." A board of officers will investigate the incident as part of …

It's official, two more squadrons to the middle of a desert for an undetermined amount of time. Best part of the article: “In choosing to relocate these F-16 squadrons to Holloman Air Force Base, the Air Force has made a decision that will enormously benefit our national security, our service-members and their families, and New Mexico’s economy,” Udall (NM Senator) said in a press release. Wait, here's a more accurate version: “In choosing to relocate these F-16 squadrons to Holloman Air Force Base, the Air Force has made a decision that will enormously benefit our national security, our service-members and their families, and New Mexico’s economy," …
