Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  1. And now for something completely different... Air New Zealand staff have nothing to hide. Something like this reminds us that flying should be fun! Too many companies take themselves WAY too seriously - see more at: https://www.nothingtohide.co.nz/ One of the people in the video series (which also includes their preflight safety videos) is Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe (although I wasn't looking for him...) Those crazy Kiwis... Mike

https://www.militaryonesource.com/MOS/FindInformation/Category/MilitarySpouseCareerAdvancementAccounts.aspx I'm not sure how well-known this program is, but I just found out about it while trying to figure out how to pay for my wife's school. The program will pay a total of $6000 towards your spouses education. There are some restrictions as to what the degree has to be in, but my wife is going to be a teacher and this program is going to pay for a large chunk of it.

Author Stephen King to Pay for Troops' Holiday Trip Home Sunday, December 13, 2009 BANGOR, Maine — Author Stephen King and his wife are donating money so 150 soldiers from the Maine Army National Guard can come home for the holidays. King and his wife, Tabitha, who live in Bangor, are paying $13,000 toward the cost of two bus trips so that members of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Unit can travel from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Maine for Christmas . The soldiers left Maine last week for training at Camp Atterbury. They are scheduled to depart for Afghanistan in January. Julie Eugley, one of King's personal assistants, told the Bangor Daily News that the …

Hi all, For those of you in the San Antonio area we are having a sporting clays tournament on 10/8 to raise money for Veteran Outdoors. This year we have taken over 60 veterans (and families) to everything from hunting here in Texas, to spear fishing in California, to baseball games, hockey games, skeet shoots etc. We have about 15 more trips planned for the next three months. We are looking for help to spread the word to shooters and sponsors. Sporting Clays Tournament Veteran Outdoors Veteran Outdoors is a 501c3. Thanks, and hope to see some of you there! Brad

Things are different when you are racing through the air six miles above the ground. Mundane mistakes can become disruptions for hundreds of people, creating news and likely even fodder for comedians. And so it was for pilots of United Airlines Flight 940 on Monday night. One spilled coffee accidentally on the Boeing 777’s avionics while over Canada en route to Frankfurt from Chicago. When radios went goofy, a pilot put the “No Radio” code (7600) in the transponder but mistakenly entered 7500, which means hijacking or unlawful interference. When that happens, there’s a lot more than crying over spilled coffee. A Transport Canada report said Canada’s defense departme…

As many as 10,000 airmen could be using smart phones on the job in the next year if the Air Force gets the money to buy them, according to a contractor on the project. Now everyone can have an iPhone to go with their personal 50" LCD. What an enormous waste of tax payer dollars.

World's Dumbest Pilots ...In 2008, pilot Jeffrey Paul Bradford tried to spice up his time in Harrisburg, PA, with stewardess Adrianna Connor. After dinner and drinks, the Pinnacle Airlines employees dashed into the nearby woods for a romp. When they got separated, she got lost and he hid in a barn.

I usually read, listen and learn on this board but I wanted to post in this case. I just heard that we lost a Fighter Pilot last night, Johnny Alison passed away at the age of 99. I was lucky enough to have talked to him a number of times when I worked for the Air Force Assoc. Listened to him speak at last September's convention and I was always impressed by his memory and sharp as a tack demeanor. He was a pilot, and I mean that in the big sense of the word. One of those guys who understood flying and seemed to be able to just crawl in a cockpit and fly just about anything with wings ... and do it well. He was one of those guys that walked into a room and you just kne…

  21. Found this on a blog somewhere, and hadn't seen it here (or anywhere else) and thought they were amusing enough to repost here... Abide by these aviation commandments: 1. Thou shalt abstain from the intersection takeoff for, verily, the runway behind thee, as the altitude above thee, cometh not to thine aid when thou needest them. 2. Thou shalt not linger on active runways lest thou become like unto ground sirloin. 3. Ignorest thou not thy checklists for many are the switches, handles, gauges and other demons awaiting to take cruel vengeance upon thee. 4. Thou shalt cast thine eyes to thy right and also to thy left as thou passeth through the air lest thy…
