Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

The preliminary report of the Swift Air 737-400 crash in Vilnius has come out and the report indicates that the Pilot Monitoring (which was the Captain) accidentally shut off Hydraulic Systems A and B while trying to turn on the Engine Anti-ice. Both the Anti-ice and Hydraulic systems use the same lever-lock switches instead of red guarded switches for the hydraulics seen on other aircraft and the hydraulic switches are just below the switches for the Engine Anti-ice. The overhead panel layout shares the legacy design of the first 737 produced which had the option of having a Flight Engineer who would sit in the jumpseat. The overhead panel allowed easy acce…

Posted outside the video thread because some are arguing this T-38 killed a Raptor during a within visual range fight. As with other purported F-22 kills (aka F-18 HUD snaps), there is likely MUCH more to this video than meets the eye. Regardless, it will likely be used as fooder for more nonsensical arguments.

  10. Just curious if this is the same guy that crashed as a Thunderbird at Mt Home? CSAF Individual Safety Award - Lt. Col. Christopher Stricklin, 14th Flying Training Wing, Columbus Air Force Base, Miss. Colonel Stricklin led and managed flight, ground, and weapon safety programs for 3,000 personnel, including 20 essential safety personnel who provided over 3,120 annual hours of on-call service. As a direct result of his efforts, flight mishaps were reduced in nearly every category; down 50 percent in Class A, 70 percent in Class C, 44 percent in Class E, and 50 percent in Controlled Movement Area Violations. 11. Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a tablet for some GA flying. I know there are a bunch of awesome apps, like Foreflight, for the Ipad, and I saw the post on here about the new Naviator app for the Android platforms. Most of everything I have seen has been positive for the apps, but do either of these really drive the purchase of a specific tablet? I will be primarily using it for private flying and that's my main reason for wanting to buy one. As of now, I'm looking at the Samsung Galaxy 2 Tablet and any of the various Ipads. Of course I want the new one with the retina display and a 64gb hard drive, but the price is pretty steep. Do you guys have any recommendati…

  12. I've been contemplating a Galaxy tablet to replace a laptop but still need basic work functions for EPR/OPR and Lotus form. I currently use a Mac but having both Windows and Macs OS bogs down the system and the laptop is due for an upgrade anyway. Has anyone tried Lotus Forms on a Galaxy Tablet? Are the Bluetooth keyboards worth while in making this a laptop replacement? Or am I just wishing at this point? I'm tired of forking cash over to apple, but windows is horrible IMHO. As far as work goes, I don't think I have an option to avoid windows anymore unless something like this could work. Any input?

My squadron gives tail flashes to departing members and I've inherited the job of building these. The inherited process is slow, expensive, and results in a shitty product. I want to improve this. I know there are one-stop-shop companies that do tail flashes but they all work in plastic or wood. At one point ours were built using real aircraft sheet metal from the maintenance shops. Those days are long gone, but I have still been restricted to using metal for the tails. Does anyone have experience with companies that make metal tail flashes? Is there a contact for salvage or Boneyard employees who could supply me with aircraft sheet metal? Any and all advice is …

Trying to change young, hormonal, healthy men who you want to be very alpha in order to do their jobs is stupid. 2. This is why we can't have nice things. 3. Don't be stupid on the internet. 4. Lots of collateral damage impending.

  17. Since it appears most of the 'Election 2012' thread has run its course, I thought I'd start a new one that discusses taxes and the fiscal situation that country currently faces--being that this is now front and center and the results will affect almost all of us. It seems that something will be done soon concerning the tax code (unless Congress allows the all the tax cuts to expire for everyone), so what are the thoughts on what will actually happen, what should happen, and what the consequences will be? My thoughts are that the House GOP will cave to some degree and will allow tax rates to increase. If I were them, I would make a deal that the 'tax rates can go …

My wife and I are currently trying to build our house in FL... pretty much the most miserable experience ever. Looks like we might actually close this time but have a question on our storage. We moved here last week of Oct and put most everything in storage. We got the extension until 1 May I believe, but the house won't be done until about September. From the few folks I've talked to, building a house is not a good enough reason for more storage time. He said he's currently paying $750+ a month for storage and the government is no longer liable for damages. Are there any reasons that an additional extension could be granted?

Not a bad flick. I think the A-10 guys on here will like it. The opening scene shows a pack of 10's destroying a field full of satellites. Pretty epic footage. The story line and some of the action is cheesy, but over all it's a fun one time see cinema. Check it out if you get the chance. -yerfer
