Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

I am shocked and saddened to report our friend and longtime forum member Danger41 passed away yesterday after a freak accident. Many of us knew him in real life and it would be an understatement to say he was an American hero. He was an incredible pilot, officer, mentor, weapons officer and a friend to all. More importantly, he was a dedicated husband and father. I had the honor of mentoring him throughout his career and was with him at Nellis the night he put his patch on...there are not enough words to describe how good of a person he was. This is an absolute gut punch and a reminder that every day is a gift, never miss a chance to tell a friend or family…

Anyone happen to know of a vinyl/print shop in the North West Florida area that does a good helmet wrap? Our local shop shut down, and I’m going to be in the VPS area for a few weeks, was hoping the Elgin/Pcola folks had a go to place with experience. Thanks!

I just read on FB that the Bird in Hand at Mildenhall is closing due to the gate being extended or something like that? I have not stayed there in years and when I did I often stayed in one of the newer billeting buildings so I’m having a hard time remembering the place.

AFSOC SMA shot and killed by police. SMA was in his home, responding to knock at door, apparently no announcement from police, nothing seen out peephole so he rightfully went and got his gun. While coming back to door, police broke in and shot him. Bodycam will set the truth free. Happening too often. This is from the same department that had the cop who lit up the occupied police cruiser due to acorn falling from tree. He resigned and is able to work elsewhere. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/roger-fortson-us-airman-shot-killed-florida-sheriffs-deputy/

  8. It's getting a bit difficult to keep up with The many new manifestations of artificial intelligence, but if you do there's a new one out for open testing that is fairly astonishing, if or nothing else than for the simplicity of producing something functional. The service is called Udio, and right now you can make a whole bunch of 30-second clips just to play around with the technology. Here is a song clip I created with my standard AI testing subject: a dinosaur that falls in love with a toaster. https://www.udio.com/songs/hveSQTSVkKQ5NnfCUx5Q2s However as I was playing around with this thing, and based on the market action over the past coupl…

ADMIN NOTE: The drone posts from the NASA WB-57F and Iran threads were merged into this one. As they were transferred based on their time stamp, CH's original post for this thread is now on page 3 (sorry CH!). A link to this was added to those threads. ~ M2 The NASA WB-57F aircraft made the news after it was revealed that it took part in collecting data on Drone Swarms off the coast of Virginia in the vicinity of Joint Base Langley. The WB-57 has probably one of the longest service careers in the US Military, it was originally a licensed built bomber from Martin Aircraft and based on the English Electric Canberra and was one of the first US jet aircraft to dro…

I had COVID a while back and was laid up for a few days doing nothing but watching TV. Knowing that we have threads on what music to listen to after a few drinks and flying videos I thought I would share another way to pass the time that should be educational for all you SNAPs out there. Us old dudes didn't have the internet so we got our military SCI FI fix from a multitude of TV shows, thanks to YouTube many of them are available free for your viewing pleasure. A few of my favorites follow: UFO - You gotta watch this one, the story lines will crack you up, a moon base, submarine-launched rocket-powered fighter jets, and the girls all wear skin tight outfits.…

I was listening to some, kind of old school but not really, rock while doing homework tonight and It made me wonder what some of your guys' music taste is. I am looking to broaden my music preferences and understand the culture (what typical mil pilots would listen to). I am sure y'all have some exceptional gems that I haven't heard of yet. so, what was a repeat song of yours while serving/ flying or now? I know this kind of relates to "things to listen to while drunk on BO", but I can't possibly see myself drunk posting on a forum to people I dont know about music. no disrespect intended Biff, keep doing you brother. 😁 this one of the songs ive been listening t…

Hoping one of you fine aviators can help me with our squadron’s Heritage Room. We’re looking to renovate it and make it relevant again. The JAG and others throughout the wing have historically scoffed at us having our own “bar”, even though the bar is just one piece of what this area means to the unit. I’m looking to help justify its existence and keep the “Bobs” at bay, and having some AF-level guidance would certainly help in that endeavor. Does anyone know of an AFI, MFR, or other guidance that speaks directly to a unit’s heritage facilities and what the requirements are to allow alcohol consumption in said facility?

Looking for some feedback and solutions of others. I have a lot of porn....errr personal files and I am looking for a backup solution that is safe and allows for world-wide access. I am not a big fan of the cloud services...giving big tech all my data is not high on my list and personally I think there will be a large cloud cyber attack in the near future. I've looked at several home cloud options and have ruled our Western Digital after the big hack and some nefarious nonsense around requiring hard drive replacement every three years. As of now I am thinking the Synology DS1522+ which I would set up as a Raid 1. We have a lot of old family pictures and vid…

So I watched a Zeihan video today on India in a post American led world… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41AEoEkgDm0 and I concur with Zeihan that India is not exactly a friend, not an enemy, my description would be a shrewd business associate occasionally. I listened to 2034 WW3 novel by Ackerman and Stavridis about a year ago and India plays a role there again not exactly friend or foe, just a techno war novel but seems like the policy makers and works see this also, India is not the next great ally we hoped for to balance against China. If this is so, is engagement (arms sales, exercises, security agreements, etc) long term a bad idea. Should…

Hello. Sorry to disturb. My name is Marian Madalin, a male engineer from Bucharest, Romania. I want to build a P51 Mustang Replica for display, I have some sponsors here who help me with free materials and services. I want to use the drawings of mr. Marcel Jurca to do the parts and assembly, but the drawings are in PDF, and I want an assumed, responsible, serious volunteer CAD engineer to help me redraw the drawings from the PDF and put them into DXF files, so it can be easily cut on CNC from plywood, aluminium, steel etc… I have some progress on the frames and formers (pictures in private). The Mustang will be displayed for a new aviation museum project I am currently de…

The pilot ejected and parachuted safely into a North Charleston neighborhood at about 2 p.m. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was in stable condition, said Maj. Melanie Salinas. The pilot’s name has not been released. Based on the missing plane’s location and trajectory, the search for the F-35 Lightning …

Friday night, Beale had a Skillet, Hoobastank and Dirty Hooks concert on the flightline. Skillet was headliner and the performance, lights, stage effect, etc... was fantastic. They told me they were going to Travis (last night), Vanderburg, Edwards, Cannon, Dyess, and Laughlin. I don't think the word got out like it should have... but if you're at any of those bases, don't miss it. Great show! They apparently enjoy doing these military tours. Cory B, who has well over 1,000 U-2 sorties, landed while I was running the band around Friday afternoon, and we got a good shot with him and them.

The Hunter discussion tends to block the next President thread so feel to vent or defend in here. As a lead off you can review this CBS interview of IRS Whistleblower Senior Supervisor Agent Gary Shapley. It has been repeatedly asserted that because Trump appointed Delaware U.S. Attorney Andrew Weiss that all is well with the Hunter Biden Plea deal. The Whistleblower gives some very compelling testimony otherwise, AND indicates DOJ stopped a deeper look at the connections to Joe Biden. As of now it looks like either Weiss or Garland is lying. Weiss is supposed to do a Sunday show this weekend, will be interesting to hear his side.

An AI-powered drone tried to attack its human operator in a US military simulation Speaking at a conference last week in London, Col. Tucker "Cinco" Hamilton, head of the US Air Force's AI Test and Operations, warned that AI-enabled technology can behave in unpredictable and dangerous ways... "The system started realizing that while they did identify the threat," Hamilton said at the May 24 event, "at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat. So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective." According to…
