Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Found this on JQP's Facebook page: https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/article/20140618/NEWS/306180074/Newly-commissioned-Marine-officer-visits-sick-grandpa-first-salute Something uplifting that reminded me how special the military (and the bonds that it can create) is, despite the widespread negativity we currently deal with. It reminds me of my first salute--it was with my grandfather, a WWII vet. While he was not as ill as the gentleman in the article, he was unable to make the trek from Pennsylvania to Maxwell for my commissioning. I flew home the same day and we did the salute in my parents' driveway. Does anyone else have a good first salute story? Now i…

The new Air Force ad campaign is on the streets and I am a fan. Very well done IMHO. I notice the shots and overall feel are very similar to an inspiring non-official ad from a few years ago (alternating shots of then/now set to a JFK speech - can't find it right now but it's been shared here) - I wonder if that was intentional or if its creator worked on this. https://youtu.be/wHkjM-3lUDk zb edited to try to embed the video

So here's a question: for the past few years the idea of retirement reform has been in play, with the caveat that anybody on active duty gets grandfathered (if they wish) in the current 20-year pension system. With both the HASC and SASC bills talking about changing some version of matching TSP contributions it looks like the writing's on the wall that within the next few years the traditional retirement won't be around for new accessions. So the question is, for individuals currently on active duty who transition to a Guard/Reserve component after any retirement legislation has been passed, can they stay in the current ARC retirement system (draw a pension at 60 ye…

  6. With all of the: "do more with less" which gave rise to DTS and AROWS... a friend and I came up with a new mobile app to take some of the suck out of tracking your pay. It's called "MilPay Tracker" and it’s currently available FREE for iOS and Android (see links below). Security: It was first on our minds too- that's why there is no signup required, no user accounts and no central data server. All data is pushed one way via the app store and the events you log are stored locally on your device. We don't ask for ANY PII and don't want to know who/where you are. TDY Tracker: The app has CONUS/OCONUS lodging and perdiem tables for the entire world- and it works off …

I'll be vague for now til a more proper donation page comes out, but a 30 year old USAF fighter pilot is in need of A LOT of prayers right now. One of the healthiest bros in the squadron went for a run Wednesday night by himself and eventually collapsed from an apparent heart attack. He was deprived of oxygen for a while prior to being found and rushed to the hospital. He's not in good shape right now, breathing with the help of a machine, but is fighting hard to come back from this event. He's got a ton of squadron family around him and family praying and sending good vibes, but the more prayers the better. It's an hour by hour update kind of thing right now to see …

I am officially a has-been. My fini flight was this morning, retirement ceremony this afternoon. Bittersweet to say the least. Getting out of that jet for the last time was a bigger deal than I was expecting. It's been a good ride - 21 years in and 18.5 of the last 19 flying the Mighty-Mighty (quick MC-12 stint in AFG back in '11). I haven't been posting much, but it's about to get a lot less. Thanks to all the warriors out there; keep fighting the good fight. Now I'm one of those guys that thank you for your service. I probably won't buy you lunch though - I'm still a cheap-ass airline pilot. Do your best to keep this place following it's roots - he…

  12. An Update from President Mark A. Welsh III General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III President September 9, 2025 Members of the Aggie Family, I am reaching out today to follow up on a statement I distributed through social media yesterday regarding an ongoing issue with one of our 16,000 course sections. I directed the Provost to remove the College of Arts and Sciences Dean and English Department Head from their administrative positions. This afternoon, following full consideration of the facts related to this situation, I directed the Provost to terminate the professor involved, effective immediately. Please understand that these decisions were m…

The preliminary report of the Swift Air 737-400 crash in Vilnius has come out and the report indicates that the Pilot Monitoring (which was the Captain) accidentally shut off Hydraulic Systems A and B while trying to turn on the Engine Anti-ice. Both the Anti-ice and Hydraulic systems use the same lever-lock switches instead of red guarded switches for the hydraulics seen on other aircraft and the hydraulic switches are just below the switches for the Engine Anti-ice. The overhead panel layout shares the legacy design of the first 737 produced which had the option of having a Flight Engineer who would sit in the jumpseat. The overhead panel allowed easy acce…

Fell into a few hundred bucks of unexpected money and next up on my things I want but definately don't need list are wood models of the aircraft I've flown (T-34C, T-1A, C-17). So, where is the best place to get these? I don't particularly need them super specialized, but it would be nice to at least get the right tail on them (ex: E for 34s, VN for the T-1)... Seems like there's a lot of options out there, and all seem shady. Anyone have any good experiences with any one particular company?

I have been sitting on some savings for about a year now, which has been in a high-yield savings account up to this point. My son is now 2.5 years old, and it's time to stop being lazy and get this money into an investment that will earn more than 3%. I've read about several options, including 529 plans, Coverdell educational IRAs, and pre-paid tuition. I'm looking to retain control of the funds and also ensure that I can get at them in the event he gets a scholarship, academy, or doesn't go to college. I don't manage money for a living, so any advice is appreciated!
