Squadron Bar
Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.
1 – Keep it civil
If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed. If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.
2 - Listen before you speak
A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."
Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force. Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.
3 – UTFSF
Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.
4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.
After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"
5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense
This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".
6 – No unpaid advertisements
Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed. Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum. For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Hi all, I plan to visit the Roundabout/Mach Loop next week, but am aware of squadrons flying nights/maintenance/away at the moment. Anybody able to clarify if there is a chance of some USAF lowfly next week please? Many thanks, keep up the great work Alex

Looking to buy a laptop/netbook within the next couple months, but not sure what to expect from the academics portions of ASBC, UPT, TDY, etc, or what the schedule will look like (ie, how much down time in between doing stuff). Is there any benefit to carrying a computer with you, or should it just be dorm entertainment?

I felt a thread all about beer would compliment the gun thread. The premise is simple: drink a beer and rate it based on your own criteria. Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier Rating: 6.9 Reason: It was very easy to drink. Smooth, delicious, and pairs well with a variety of food. It starts with a lot of head and it takes awhile to go down (so to speak) . It kind of had an after taste akin to apple sauce and was a little too light for my palette. I recommend it to any fan of IPAs.

Has anyone had experience with base housing at Laughlin? I talked to a lady at the housing office about what kind of house I would get as a married captain with one kid. She said it would be a 2 bed, 1 bath floor plan, which doesn't make any sense to me. Captain BAH can afford a really nice in-town house, so why would we get one of the smallest floor plans they offer? I've also heard the houses are old and nasty. Any truth to that?

Thought I'd share one of the more absurd e-mails to come out of Laughlin... A couple of my favorite replies I saw attached to this e-mail chain: Don't get me wrong -- I understand that UPT requires a certain amount of... decorum, that you might not see in the operational Air Force. But this is so stupid it's almost humorous. Talk about a gross overreaction. Someone needs to get out of AETC for a while.

Almost put this in the WTF thread, but I think it deserves its own. Prophetic words from the Liberal Anti-War Law Professor and an enlightening view of his opinion of U.S. service members..."I think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings." https://abovethelaw.com/2011/11/law-professor-objects-to-solicitations-to-help-our-troops-in-afghanistan/

From CNN.com Blink-182's Barker critically injured in plane crash (CNN) -- A man who came across a fiery jet crash saw former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and disc jockey Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein trying to extinguish the flames on their bodies by ripping off their clothing. "We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," William Owens told CNN affiliate WIS in Columbia, South Carolina. "I felt ill or sick to think that these lives were snuffed out at that point." The two men were in critical condition with extensive burns Saturday. The crash killed four other people on board, authori…

This morning, I was reading an interesting Kellogg study on military service and its influence on CEOs (https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/faculty/benmelech/html/BenmelechPapers/MilitaryCEOs.pdf). As I start planning for my enroute descent to retirement (it's inevitable at some point), I'm wondering what experiences and advice the grey beards have for the transition. The airlines thread is awesome, but that's not the life for everyone. What other options are out there for a pilot with some staff stink, a TS, and an online MBA?

For all you guitar players, music lovers, technology fiends, history buffs, TDY-ers shacked up in a hotel, or dudes who need a break from the old lady: here's an awesome documentary of Les Paul recounting all his years in the music industry. It was done in 2007, so he was still alive to be interviewed. It's a little over an hour and a half, but it's well worth the time. Paul seems to have been one of those people that had such a drastic and profound influence in so many areas, it's virtually impossible to have a realistic idea of the impact he had across the board. Everyone from Nelly to Ennio Morricone probably owes their career to him. Enjoy Chasing Sound: The Biogr…

Found this on a blog somewhere, and hadn't seen it here (or anywhere else) and thought they were amusing enough to repost here... Abide by these aviation commandments: 1. Thou shalt abstain from the intersection takeoff for, verily, the runway behind thee, as the altitude above thee, cometh not to thine aid when thou needest them. 2. Thou shalt not linger on active runways lest thou become like unto ground sirloin. 3. Ignorest thou not thy checklists for many are the switches, handles, gauges and other demons awaiting to take cruel vengeance upon thee. 4. Thou shalt cast thine eyes to thy right and also to thy left as thou passeth through the air lest thy…

In my limited military flying career, I've been rather impressed with the maintenance at my locations (they'll call it broken when its broken, fixed when it's actually fixed, and fess up and bite the bullet if it's their responsibility), but I cannot say the same of life support (this isn't an indictment of anyone, just a query to see if this is a more widespread problem or just a few isolated incidents I've had). Example 1: In our parachutes, there is a high-pressure Oxygen bottle that I was told as a BUFF guy "should always be above 1800 unless it's cold". Well, I'm flying out of Barksdale on a "cold" day in February and the gauge's needle was pointing below 1800 PSI…

Saw an IG meme summarizing a recent event at Littlerock. Sounds like leadership was down on their hands and knees pleading for pilots to stay and not go to the airlines. Anyone that was there have first hand intel? It’s a glorious event if true.

(This last post was deleted. I figured it might be interesting though to many people who live in central Texas and are on the forums, so I'm going to try again. Feel free to move to another location on the board if its more appropriate.) Last year we started a group called Disruptive Thinkers - ATX to build cross talk between vets, active duty military and civilians. It's a group that meets regularly in Austin with attendance by many vets, local tech leaders along with some Air Force folks who make the drive from San Antonio. We also attract some from Camp Mabry and Ft. Hood. On Monday, Feb 3rd, we are hosting Col (ret) 'Shark' Garland, the former commandant of US…
