Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

So I'm gonna be goin to the fuge in the not so distant future for t-38s at holloman. I've heard the -117 pilots used to be pretty cool as far as showin you around the jets and whatever else once you're done with the fuge. Is there anything like this still goin on out there now with the -22s? Just wonderin if there's anything really cool we can do while we're out there besides getting our faces mushed in, in the fuge and besides stayin at the camino....

  2. OK… so after my USAF retirement I really missed being around airplanes; and I was MX, not even a pilot, so I joined the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA, the guys who host OSH each year) local chapter. No, it’s not even close to being the same thing, but an airplane an airplane so it’ll do. It just so happens that we are remodeling an old avionics repair shop in the small hangar where the chapter is located into a… err… um… “pilot’s lounge”. While 95% of the members are civilian pilots we do have a lot of vets and this room will be very similar to those “heritage rooms” seen in many USAF flying squadrons but with a more civilian/general aviation slant. The pr…

  4. Hi all, I'm headed to UPT in April, and want to buy my fiancée a new car to replace her 2004 Saturn Lemon as soon as it fits the budget. She'll be commissioning when she's out of law school in a year, and I want to give her something that will make her feel good and serve her well over our first few PCS's--probably a middle-of-the-market crossover. I hope to fly C-17s, and as a JAG, it's likely that she'll be stationed at the same bases as me. (The following question is assuming that everything goes according to plan and understands that nothing is guaranteed. Humor me.) She's from Texas, so she isn't experienced with driving in winter weather. (And, well, she isn't…

Okay Fellas, I UTFSF but couldn't find what I was looking for. The wife and I are going to Germany in about two weeks. My wife's twin sister is over there TDY at Ramstein so we are using that as an excuse to go. We are taking my father-in-law with us and he has never been to Germany so I really want to show him a good time. He's in good shape so getting around isn't a problem. He's cool, likes beer, and is up for about anything. Looking for suggestions on things to do. I'd really like to find some "off the beaten path"/ "best kept secret" places if anyone has suggestions for those as well. I've been to Trip Advisor looking and it's almost overwhelming and you have to pi…

This almost started out in the security forces thread... Earlier in the week at work we got an email saying the cops were going through the parking lot and ticketing anybody's car that was unlocked (plenty of folks drive beater used cars and don't bother to lock them). By the time most folks got out to their cars to lock them up, they already had tickets. I would have figured it was just standard skycop lack-of-anything-better-to-do-itis, but it turns out they were directed. Well we had a WG/CC change of command ceremony last week and it turns out the new WG/CC directed the cops to do this. So for pretty much his first public action, a bunch of folks get tickets.…

I know what I am going to do but am just curious to see what all of you would do in this situation...Got picked up off the street for a guard viper pilot slot and just found out my OTS recruiter rolled over an FY08 OTS Pilot slot application to the just released 0901 OTS Pilot Board. Curious to see what those of you on AD, in the guard, in ROTC/OTS, on casual etc would do in this situation. Nothing like having great options though it is a tough choice and kind of begs the question as to which is the better gig in today's world...guard or AD. Opinions wanted...talk it up

Interesting article... But if it happens then the law that prohibits women from being drafted will have to be repealed. It does not make sense that females would be excluded from having to serve. I understand not letting them in certain career fields, but those are few and far between and there are plenty of other jobs they can fufill. Hasn't that been proven already? Cheers! M2

Fellow military members: just writing to warn everyone not to use a power company in Texas called YEP Energy. Their rates are low but their customer service is horrific and they are not military-friendly. When I called to cancel my service during my PCS from Texas months ago, they made no mention of the $175 cancellation fee they planned to charge me. When I received my final bill and saw the charge, I sent them a copy of my orders and asked that they reconsider. I received an amended bill, paid it, and thought that was the end of the matter...until a collection agency called me last week! I paid the bill again, fearing my online payment hadn't gone through. …

Why does DOD continue to insist on starting operations 1 minute after midnight? Everything thing I see is 0001. Do we magically skip a minute every night and I have been missing this al along? So I ask the question and these are the answers I received. 1. 0000 is not a valid time. 2. 2400 is midnight not 0000. 3. The computer does not understand 0000 4. 0000 confuses people. Everyone, look at your digital watch. 1 second after 2359 and 59 seconds, the watch will read 0000 not 0001. Since we live in a post Y2K world, computers do understand 0000. Make the madness stop. Insist on using 0000.

I sometimes think some of the best (and worst) ideas happen when you are cruising over the Pacific. Maybe its because those missions are a rare occurrence these days. Who knows. Hopefully this idea ends up in that "best" category. A couple of us worked with an awesome developer to make an iPhone app. It lists all of the PerDiem location/rates and can actually estimate your total per Diem for multi-day and multiple locations. Then you can e-mail your results to your buds using the app. It's called PerDiemCalc. You can find it by typing PerDiemCalc in the itunes search bar. Interested in what you think about it. Maybe we'll do another app if people like it.

The MP3 player I've had for 5+years (Creative Labs) has been dropped one too many times during a couple trips to the desert/PCS's and is on it's last leg. I've been looking at some 80G hard drive based players and have narrowed down to the 5th Gen IPod and the 2nd Gen Zune. I have about 20G of music right meow, and music is the primary focus with 2nd focus video's, and all the other stuff 3rd. Wondering if anyone on the board has either of these and what their likes and dislikes are: Ease of use of actual device, use of propreitary software, battery life, durability, etc. Cheers, Cap-10

Tried searching but my search skills failed me... My class has the opportunity to get a couple of kegs donated to us from a craft brewery in CO for our drop night. Only catch is the club says we have to buy the kegs thru them. Anybody have any experience in negotiating with the club? We don't mind paying to bring it in if possible but the idea of having some great beer (~6-9%) vs Budwater has me doing some research before approaching the club again..... I'll admit I am a little pissed at the club as well, the prices they are trying to charge for kegs is f'in outrageous (think almost $200 for a keg of bud)......they make roughly $20k every drop so money shouldn'…
