Was the Expendables good?

No, it sucked. I set a low expectation bar and the Expendables failed to reach it. 10 action heroes does not a good action movie make. I don't expect my action movies to have a whole lot of plot or acting, but you gotta give me something.

Perhaps the idiot couple in front of me who brought their 4 and 6 year old kids to the movie would disagree.

"Red." Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, some other old to elderly actors.

Actually pretty good movie. Retired CIA spec ops agent Willis is tagged by the bad guys to settle some old scores. Cross country run "getting the band back together." Enlists the help of a Russian, former Soviet spy, to help out.

Some good lines, good action, Malkovich plays a good paranoid.

Worth it if TDY, a slow day, or on Netflix.

If you've got kids and liked Shrek, Tangled is a good bet. I was entertained, but it's definitely a sappy Disney kid's movie. John Lassiter must be kicking himself for jumping ship at Pixar to go to work for Disney full-time.

Out on DVD, Scott Pilgrm vs the World is a great movie. Again, full of ridiculous action sequences and more than a few non sequitors, but very funny and entertaining.

Saw tron on a whim...I didn't ever really know what tron's deal was back in the 80s but the new one looked cool, was fairly epic, and had a sweet soundtrack. Plus Olivia Wilde looked all futuristic and hot. Worth a matinee ticket or DVD rental for sure. It definitely exceeded my non-existent expectations.

Read my post right above you? Movie was worth it.

Naw, I didn't see it; but thanks for the recommendation. I saw where it fell a little short of its expected weekend goal ($47.3M made, hoping for over $50M); but I don't think this is the best time for movies. Still, I want to see it in the theater; and will probably do so next week.

I recommend it. I saw the original a very long time ago and didn't remember much. But Legacy was a great movie. I'd recommend seeing it in 3D.

I am lucky that I bought the 2-DVD 20th Anniversary box set about a year ago, they are going for $180 new and at least $75 used!

Cheers! M2

Anyone seen TRON: Legacy yet?

Just saw it tonight. Recommend watching the first one again before you go--it'd been at least 15 years since I saw it start-to-finish, and there were a handful of in-jokes in the new movie that I would've missed entirely if I hadn't just seen it. I don't know how well it would have "worked" as a stand-alone movie (aside from Olivia Wilde in skin-tight leather--nsplayer was spot-on about that! :hitit: ). As a follow-on to a classic movie, though, it was pretty good. I thought the 3D was mostly gimmicky vs value-added, but I feel the same way about just about every 3D movie, so YMMV. One of the most impressive things is the CG magic that made Jeff Bridges look just a little older than he did in the original (and I literally laughed at how young he was when I re-watched the first one).

[Edit to add: oh, yeah--and I'd forgotten about the awesome camel toe that Cindy Morgan had throughout the entire movie as Yori; that alone was worth watching it again!]

BL, good flick, definitely worth it for any fan of the first movie.

Holy crap, really?!? I bought that for ~$15 at Walmart on a checkout-aisle impulse buy when it first came out--and didn't get around to unwrapping it until this weekend. Might've tried to eBay it had I known.... Naw.... :nob:

Pffff... what're they teaching the kids these days?!? It was pretty ground-breaking stuff. Graphics are pretty cheesy by today's standards--but they literally invented the CG that's evolved into all the rage in today's movies as they went w/ Tron. Add to the fact that it was during the heyday of the video game explosion, and it was a sure-fire blockbuster.... The video game Tron--one of the cooler arcade games of the era--was originally released in limited amounts as a promo for the movie. With the huge popularity of Tron (the movie) and the game itself, they couldn't turn 'em out fast enough to keep up w/ demand.

Good stuff..... HELL YEAH, I was looking forward to this movie...!

[pardon me--I guess my geek is showing.... ]

Need a kid-friendly-yet-funny-for-the-adults-in-the-room flick? Can recommend "How to Train Your Dragon" Not Disney or Pixar sugary, but good enough we bought the DVD.

Craniums up...I think there's a series of porn "How to Train Your Dragon" versions 1 though 69 DVDs out there, too. Not so kid friendly.

Bender has the full collection if anyone wants a review.

If anyone is interested in episode 7 with Ron Jeramey and BQZip01's mom (I hear around these parts she's the new village bicycle) let me know.

Just saw a documentary titled "Restrepo" about a unit that was fighting in Afghanistan. Wow. Probably one of the best war films I've ever seen. Some amazing footage and commentary.

The recent medal of honor recipient came from the operation that is documented in this film.

A must see. - even if you don't like documentaries. It's shot in a very cinematic way, even my wife couldn't stop watching.

I have the DVD to watch this weekend and have been reading the book "War" written by Sebastian Junger who is the journalist that shot the video for the movie. There is also an associated picture book called "Infidel" written by Tim Wetherington that documents all the key players. This is a must read if you want to understand what it is like on the front lines of hell in Afghanistan.

There was an Academy attendee/grad years ago that worked for Disney and made the Hyena marching scene in Lion King to resemble the marches on the Tzo. Maybe it's the same guy again?
