Background: New pilot (warrant) at a new Army guard unit I’ve been told that if you get picked up by an ANG unit, your remaining Active Duty Service Obligation isn’t a factor, because you’re going from Guard to Guard, even if you are transferring states. This seems logical, but couldn’t find an exact answer to this in DOD 1205.05, 1300.04, or 1304.25. Anyone have experience? If anyone else has been in a similar situation, when do you show your interest or intentions to your current unit? I’d think you’d want to keep it close to your chest until you get picked up, otherwise you’re burning bridges on a gamble.

Just turned 26 this past January. My AFOQT is scheduled this month, hopefully this time around it doesn’t get canceled. Due to Covid, it’s been taking me months to get it scheduled. Once that’s done my goal is to serve my country ASAP. I have no preference of airframe or location, if I had to choose I would love to fly heavies. I’ve been told I could be considered old by some units and that my time is running out. If that’s the case should I attempt and apply to AD? I’ve heard many say they’ve applied to units for 2-3 years before getting selected or even not. I would hate to apply and interview with a bunch of units only to never get selected for a UPT slot and end up be…

Hi All, I am interested in joining the 327th and have several questions. 1. What is it like to join a reserve unit that doesn’t have their own tails and attached to an active duty unit? 2. What’s their op tempo like? 3. Recommendations on where to live in Little Rock. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Today I heard from a unit POC that the AFRC has said there will be absolutely no age waivers approved for Reserve UPT slots. I trust that its honest feedback but has anyone else heard anything along those lines?

I've got a pretty tough dilemma. I'm in the interview process for an ANG fighter, with a high likelihood of either getting picked up or alternate, but no deadline to hear back. I'm talking like a 69% chance or higher at this point of being picked up or alternate. However, I just got offered essentially my dream job on active duty. Problem is... If I take the active duty job, I incur an additional two years of service commitment and likely wouldn't be able to take the fighter job if offered (I think). My logical thought process is struggling to make a decision. On one hand "a bird in the hand" applies, but on the other, a fighter flying job in the ANG is my real dream job …

The World Famous Bayou Militia is tentatively planning an inexperienced hiring board on Sunday, 11 July 2021 at NAS JRB New Orleans, LA. Obviously COVID will play a part in this, so be prepared to flex. Applicants should have a current PCSM, resume, transcripts, and letters of recommendation ready to submit prior to any visit. Please direct all questions to 122fspilothiring@gmail.com. I won’t respond to DMs, inquiries, etc. on this platform. Nuke Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Asking in regards to heavies. After going on drill status, what’s the longest amount of time you can regularly be away from the squadron? Is a month on/month off schedule (or 2 weeks on/off like ACME) possible? Not trying to game the system for BAH or anything, but if this sort of schedule was possible it would allow much greater freedom of living location. Thanks!

Hey everyone, I have a hypothetical scenario that I was hoping to get some advice on in case it comes up. Quick elevator summary about myself: 30 years old, good scores, STEM degrees and work experience, PPL. I’ve been lurking on the forums for a while and I think I’m fairly competitive for heavies. Been applying for about a year now and have had a few interviews but no offers yet, but I’ve been improving my interview skills with each one I get. As everyone here is aware, the boards this summer were very sparse because of Covid. Many were postponed or cancelled. Because of the current climate I applied to almost all boards that were posted. After a …

Afternoon all, I have a few questions regarding rushing units, if I can even visit the ones I'd like to due to covid. My main question is, should I show up in uniform as I'm a DSG ANG enlisted member even though I'm in civilian status? My plan is to fly to an airport nearby, grab a FBO vehicle and visit the squadron. I don't want to show up in civilian clothes and introduce myself as TSgt and look like a tard doing so. Thanks

Hey all, I was picked up by a heavy ANG unit last March with the contingency that I get my PPL by the end of the year. I had knocked out nearly all of my PPL requirements aside from my solo XC and had to abandon flight training and cancel my Checkride in October for COVID related reasons and have had a heck of a time rescheduling ( I live in a very rural area and getting a DPE out here is tough). Anyways, The chief pilot who gave me that offer has since retired. In speaking with the new chief pilot, I was informed that the PPL was no longer required. My question is ‘should I continue pursuing my PPL?’ It’s no longer required and I’ve already blown through $10,0…

Does anyone have any info on if it is possible to do the RPA or ABM route through the ANG, go to OTS all that, and then switch over to manned flying and go to UPT year or two later after training. Or do you get trapped into the job? Just trying to see if that is a good option in the current flying hiring environment, or if it's just better to keep applying to UPT boards and being patient.

I see in the AFRC UFT Guidebook that they are no longer taking unsponsored applicants. What is the reason for it, is it just temporary? Will the unsponsored route ever come back in the future?

Greetings all. Long story short, I'm an A1C from the MTANG, currently at Sheppard going through tech school in the 2A6x4 career field. I wrote a longer post about my background a couple months ago before BMT ( thread linked for those who care to look ) , so this is a sort of follow on. As the title implies, I'd like to know how early is too early to start visiting the units I want to apply to in the future. Once I finish tech school I'll have somewhere between 84 and 90 overall college credits (I have to speak to the education office and the college I'm going to be starting at to figure out how many will actually be counted). But after my MEST day…

UPT student here just trying to learn how this all works. Going from AD pilot to guard/reserve, how much does my airframe on active duty matter to a guard/reserve unit? Examples: could a C17 guy get into an F16 unit? HH60 guy into a C5 unit? F22 guy into a C130 unit? Any relevant information is welcome, obviously a newbie with some curiosity.

Hey all, I know this question has been touched over the decades and before I get crucified on here, I did search through the forum a bit and found the same message of “be a good dude, be yourself, don’t be a douche... etc. I recently got offered an interview with a fighter squadron and also have a good shot with a heavy unit. Besides reading through the interview questions and having a good response for each question ahead of time—so you’re not sitting there in silence when the question “what’s your weakness or when did you mess up in life” is asked and reluctantly say I don’t know I’ve never thought of that and looking like an idiot and probably losing your s…

Hey Guys, So I just read that the Florida guard stood up a brand new unit flying the Osprey. Is there anyone on here that’s in the unit, or know anything about them? I’m a guard herk driver interested in learning more about that unit and the mission. feel free to DM me, or drop a comment below if you’re so inclined.

I have recently switched over from USMC active duty to AF Reserves and am on the next board for O4. I need to send my FITREPs from the Marines via snail mail to Forth Worth, apparently. They are asking for a location and address to send them, does anyone know who I could contact or know the address that my FITREPs need to be sent? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone, In March I was hired with a unit and I'm in the middle of all the processing paperwork. I've gone to MEPS for them, swore in, and I'm in the middle of the background check. I've applied to a few units and my top choice was delayed a little but I just got notice that my top unit is offering me a job. It's the airframe and mission I want and it's where my family lives. The other unit is a bit far. I really want my top choice unit obviously as that is what would work best for me but I'm unsure how to proceed. My top unit knows I've already been hired at another unit but I'm unsure how to explain this to the unit that I was already hired at. Have other pe…

Reached out to a few reserve units to ask about pilot openings or their next UPT board and through the course of the convo and exchanging niceties they essentially gave it to me straight saying the previous AFRC board selected 5 of the 70 fully qualified and vetted applicants ~10%. They mentioned they’d sponsor me no problem but it doesn’t really mean anything because the selection rate is so low due to AD taking back some UPT spots, the current backlog of applicants, and the UPT slots are going to the flying units that are under manned. Just seems like going Reserve these days is a pretty bleak prospect with all the variability. Think this is an isolated issue o…

Good day all, im an AD C-17 guy. My daughter wants to enlist as a LM in the Reserves. How do E’s go about getting hired by a unit? She spoke with a Reserve recruiter in CHS and was told she can’t pick a job and location. I thought that was an advantage of going that route. Any help pointing her in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. TIA

After years of struggling financially, I took my first few consistent flying lessons beginning in March after being able to land a better paying job. COVID happened, the country went on lockdown and couldn't resume until recently. I started flying again and have just under 20 hours now. But my job today just announced layoffs are coming. Business has been slow due to COVID, hours for a large number of us have already been cut. I saved up a bunch of money to hopefully solo. The problem is the area I live in, the cost of living is very high. To get a PPL through a flight school it's anywhere from $12K to $18K. For a Private instructor it's around $10k to $12K. I'm flying wi…

Sad news for Nashville and the 118th. They used to fly 130s but are now a RPA/drone operation.
