  1. Just got disqualified with this exact situation and this post gave me a glimmer of hope. Any trends in these being approved/denied as of late? Thanks for all the info you provide!
  2. If you’re transferring within your state, it’s a much easier sell but I’ve absolutely seen guys get shut down who wanted to do the same thing three years out of flight school. It all depends on your command and, as a commander, I would have a very hard time letting someone go that we just spent a $1M to train that has given nothing back to the unit. The unspoken rule in my state is that you either do your six or do a deployment.
  3. Never hurts to have a fixed-wing background. This coming from a regional airline pilot that never thought he'd want to fly anything except Black Hawks. Soak up all the hours you can get on Uncle Sam's dime.
  4. I’m a current UH-60 ARNG RLO that got picked up for ANG heavies and am scheduled to spend a week in San Antonio for the CPW validation in the very near future. Good luck!
  5. There are many units that don’t advertise. If there’s a unit you’re interested in, I would start calling immediately. As long as you’re respectful, it can only help you to get your name in early so you can find out their timeline and visit as much as possible.
  6. Your mileage may vary, of course, but here's a takeaway from my very recent experience. Herk unit in a relatively unpopular part of the country received over 60 applications and hired four. Of these four, two are Army rotary flying regional jets at an airline, one is a CFII approaching 2,000 hours, and the fourth is enlisted with a four year aviation degree and is an instrument-rated private pilot. What I'm getting at is that this isn't the most desirable unit (location, airframe, etc.), hired more applicants than average (based on what I've seen), and still required at least an instrument ticket. All four hires were local to the area, meaning that an out-of-town applicant would likely require even stronger qualifications. Going off of what has happened in the past does not accurately reflect the current situation, I believe COVID's effect on civilian pilot hiring is largely to blame.
  7. Got notification for the 190th ARW UPT board being held in February to fly KC-135s in Topeka, KS. Packets are due by January 7th and I can send more information to anyone who's interested. I'm no longer in the hunt but visited a few times and it seems like a great group of guys out there.
  8. Actually got picked up last night for a C-130 slot! My excitement is tempered a bit because I know the upcoming process isn’t going to be smooth or quick but I just hope it will be worth it in the end!
  9. I'll vouch for almost everything my twin-rotored compatriot has said, save for the UH-60 jab. I went to a C-130 meet and greet and was one of at least three Army guys looking to make the jump over. I've been in my ARNG battalion for 12 years and have literally never seen or even heard of an AF guy looking to transfer in.
  10. Pilot Candidate Selection Method (PCSM) (af.mil) Fill out the Commander's Sample Letter Letters that do not identify the candidate's SSN or the amount of hours requested will NOT be processed. Letters not signed by the Candidate and Commander, Recruiter, or Flight Instructor will NOT be processeed. Flight Instructors MUST include their CFI# and Exp. date. Letters without a copy of the last page of the flight log, left and right sides with totals in ALL columns that have entries, will NOT be processed. Email both the commanders letter and the log book pages to AFPC.PCSM@us.af.mil
  11. I wore mine and was glad I did. It helps move conversations along as it already tells part of your story and establishes some common ground. Plus, there's the benefit of having your name on your chest, which can only make it easier to remember.
