I've been working on memorizing them and know that boldface items need to be memorized verbatim, but do ops limits need to be verbatim as well? For example, do we need to memorize capitalized/not capitalized letters or hyphenated/not hyphenated words in ops limits (i.e. dual only maneuvers, etc.)? Someone, either an IP or Bcourser, at Luke told me when I was casual there not to worry about verbatim with ops limits. However, some of my classmates have been telling me to memorize capitalization and so on here. [ 05. February 2006, 00:12: Message edited by: BSAV ]

TheBurt made a good point from another thread; that being we were getting into a topic that did not have to do with the original topic. With that said...holding came up as a topic, and I have to admit that I do not hold at all as a private pilot, and very, very rarely do I send someone to the penalty track. With that said, is it often that commercial airliners or military, doesn't matter, ever hold. And do you only hold to a) fulfill the FAR requirement, or B) teach something to a young pup. This thread may be pointless, but I believe, holding to be a thing of the past (think NDB) due to extension of runways, larger airports (gates to park a/c), greater attention of…

  4. I pulled a chair up to the window here in Crystal City, and I can see part of the puzzle palace, the monument, and the Dome. I'm not as impressed as I once was. Believe it or not, I'm constantly challenging my own thoughts more than anyone else and I don't like the feeling of, or giving the perception of, shytting on my country. But just when I convince myself that my concerns are overwrought, they get reinforced. Like this article from Gallup. https://news.gallup.com/poll/509189/confidence-military-lowest-two-decades.aspx My career in service was a pretty big chapter in my life so I have an interest in whether my investment was a wise one. Yesterday, I saw a…

From Osan's FB page: UPDATE: After landing from a training mission, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot ejected from an F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 36th Fighter Squadron at approximately 5 p.m. The pilot was taken to the 51st Medical Group clinic and was listed in good condition. "We are relieved that our Mustang pilot ejected safely, and is now in the good hands of our medical team," said Col. Andrew Hansen, 51 Fighter Wing commander. "We are currently focused on thoroughly investigating the cause of this incident in order to minimize the chances of it happening again in the future." A board of officers will investigate the incident as part of …

I'm heading up to Thule AB for a TDY for a week and a half. Checked the TDY gouge and it was empty. Everything I've heard about the place is all hearsay, but not much of it sounds good, which sucks because I'm actually excited to go. Anyone ever been up there and have some info on it? I'll be sure to update the gouge when I get back too.

I opened the WSJ this morning and on the front page I saw this article on the Afghan Air Corps. It's a pretty interesting look inside to see what they're like now (Wow!) and how the US guys are trying to straighten them out and show how it's really done. It's a pretty interesting read. Imagine doing some of that stuff in your own squadron! ("Will there be lunch?") https://online.wsj.com/article/SB122091943902612681.html

I have never seen a military aircraft enter a slip on landing. Can you perform a safe one in a fighter? Just curious if this is something you would only do in a GA aircraft or not. I know it wouldnt be a good idea in a big aircraft, and the airlines dont like it. stupid question, but I guess thats what this site is for, questions mate.

  14. I'm currently a 2LT on Active Duty in the Army (non-aviation). Although, I'm excited to serve the next three years of my contract, I'm interested in becoming a pilot in the USAF, either on Active Duty or in the Reserves . I'm currently deployed and have had a great experience interacting with the crew of a C5 on the way into theater and my long term goal is to learn how to fly fixed wing. I've also heard there's been a pilot shortage for quite some time. Is it possible to pivot my career into the Air Force and become a pilot? If so, what does that process look like?

Anyone ever done it? I'm considering the option because I don't want to add the miles. I have a short term PCS across the country but will be coming back to the same station after 6 months. Will add +/- 6,000 miles to the odometer if I take the drive. I understand that the GOV will only pay for it if it's cheaper than driving, so I am looking into paying out of pocket as well. Any insights or experiences are appreciated. I'll essentially be moving from the pacific ocean to the atlantic.

This is a couple months old, but I just had it sent to me. Seeing a fallen soldier home There is more to the article where the author does a good job following up with Lance Cpl. Wilson's parents, but this first half just blows me away. What in the world in your life could be so important that you can't give up your seat to a family who is trying to get home to their son's funeral? This showcases what is wrong with people these days. It's too bad there aren't more folks out there like the author.

I have just finished reading Not A Good Day To Die, which recounts Operation Anaconda principally from a ground pounder perspective. While the book makes clear that both pre-planned and on-call CAS was crucial to the operation from the get-go, and concedes that the Air Force was only vaguely involved in the planning of the operation, it does little to analyse the eventual failures of fixed wing CAS (both the pre-planned and the on-call) that it says occurred. Several things from the book struck me as curious: 1) That AF planners at the CAOC seemed so inflexible when an expanded list of targets was created in the build-up to the operation, despite seemingly having…
