Hello all, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is 1LT Brogan Steele, and I am a United States Air Force Auxillary mission pilot. Our organization is also known as the Civil Air Patrol, and I'd love to talk to you all about some of the flying opportunities within the Auxillary. I've been very fortunate in my time in the CAP thus far. I am a member of a very aggressive SAR unit (Search And Rescue) that is on-call for operations 24/7/365. I am not too sure I'll release the name of my unit due to OPSEC (Operational Security) concerns, but lets just say we're one of the better-known units around the country. Because of the aggressive nature of our unit, the commitmen…

Hey everybody! My names Roger and im a 17 year old with high hopes, and aspirations to become apart of the elite military aviation community, and eventually become the pilot of a fighter aircraft. Anyways so my question to you guys is: What is the right stuff? I constantly keep hearing this saying, and several other relevant maxims, which refer to the characteristics ,and personality traits one must have in order to succeed in the fighter pilot business. Also,if one does not carry certain characteristics, can he/she acquire them? Thank you!

  10. Serious question. How do you pilots deal with serious problems at home while deployed or on duty (for lack of a better term). Serious problems such as terminally sick relatives or perhaps idiot family members who are always in trouble or perhaps financial trouble or other relatives who are going through hard times? Does it add to the stress? How do you deal with it exactly? I guess I'm one of those guys who likes to be in control and I get frustrated when bad things happen that I have absolutely no control over. I kind of wonder how an Air Force pilot would deal with this.

More bad news for the year. A nickel on the grass for another good dude. No word on base, just "shortly after takeoff" and not combat related. https://www.businessinsider.com/an-american-f-16-pilot-was-killed-in-a-crash-in-the-middle-east-2014-12

Hi there. I own a few small businesses, one of which is growing well enough to expand to a multi-location operation (a big step for us). I'm wondering if there are any other Guardsmen/Reservists here who own their own business who have either a) balanced their service obligation with running their business or b) specifically have gone through UPT while owning their business (and possibly running from afar). The expectation that was made when I was hired into my guard unit was that I will basically need to disappear off the face of the planet for 2-3 years during UPT and we're thinking about maybe hiring a general manager to run the place while I'm gone or selling out…

  13. I saw Hueypilot's post about this in the MC-12 thread, but in the interest of separating the two incidents I'm starting a new thread. Crash: National Air Cargo B744 at Bagram on April 29, 2013, aircraft lost height shortly after takeoff... Godspeed brothers.

  14. https://www.cnn.com/2015/06/30/asia/indonesia-military-plane-crash/ About as bad as it gets. Couldn't help but notice the article says there were 110 passengers and 12 crew on board. Seems high for a 130? Or not?

  15. https://www.jqpublicblog.com/curbing-wrongful-termination-in-the-air-force-four-common-sense-reforms/ I've been hearing a lot more lately about a lot of the toxic leadership problems in the Air Force and a few victims of wrongful firings. Thoughts on the content of the post and topic? Has anyone seen or hear about this happening to someone they know?

  16. Once again the idea of passing the A-10 to the Army is making its appearance. Interesting review of the history of USAF-US Army agreements on fixed wing support aviation (Key West Agreement) and the claim that the USAf never wanted the warthog in the first place. I think the first time I heard this topic raised was in 92, after the Desert Storm when the concept was floated in QDR. I guess the increased cost of the F-35 makes keeping the A-10 difficult to justify. The question would be, does the Army really want it, and if so can they maintain it. I assume since WOs successfully fly and employ highly complex aircraft such as the AH-64, the MH-60 and the MH-47,…

  21. This is somewhat Reserve/Guard-centric, but I thought it was worthy of general discussion. Over the last 10 years, I have watched with horror as the ANG has tried harder and harder to become like the active duty. Our leadership has yelled from the rooftops "We're just like active duty! We're an operational reserve, not strategic! Give us new equipment! Deploy us more!" Meanwhile.... The standard ANG AEF deployment has gone from 45 days to 180. ANG units are now being routinely tasked for non-voluntary, non-combat 90-120 day TSP deployments. And now it looks like the reserve component deploy to dwell ratio is in question. For many years, the RC's deploy to dwell ratio …

  23. There is relentless discussion on this board about getting out of the military, but I don't hear a whole lot from the guys who got out and are making a buck in the civilian world (outside the airlines or guard/reserve). With that being said, I have been looking at the headhunter firms and honestly cannot determine which one, if any, is better than the other. From a completely uneducated perspective, I would think that quality of interviews is a fine balance with quantities of looks you get from companies. Does any one have any experience with Cameron Brooks, Alliance, Bradley Morris that would make you definitively say that one is better than the other?

  24. Can anyone say with any authority how much having a type rating helps when interviewing for an airline? Before I drop 6-9 thousand on a B737 or A320 when there is a good chance I may not be assigned to said type, does it really add that much to my military background in Strike Eagles?

  25. Please read the following article, and any links necessary if you are interested. I find it interesting that CMSAF would answer questions based on an Reddit.com AMA, but I'm glad this might actually be looked at through the appropriate light. https://www.airforcetimes.com/story/military/2015/06/02/air-force-reviewing-if-airmen-overlooked-for-medal-of-honor/28371279/ I ran into this type of mindset throughout my time in the military and I was always dumbfounded when leadership would squash a medal nomination for one of my guys. The leadership's misguided logic was that if someone received an achievement medal, then it would look bad if they received another one…
