Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Kandahar Airmen Use AFSO 21 at War "After a brief Lean training session, the team proceeded to inventory all of the items in the shelter essential to the A-10 phase inspection operation and segregate the things they did not need or use. Once finished, the team straightened the area and gave it a good cleaning by sweeping the floors and turning in unneeded items to supply." Okay, so they clean up after themselves and call it AFSO 21? Way to go dudes! I'm going to clean up my work area tomorrow and add it to my OPR fodder!

  9. Now I find myself faced with the dilemma of voting in favor of my own pocketbook or with actual principles. As much as I love money though I think I'm going to have to actually stick to my own principles here and not vote to pay myself. For those who aren't aware there is a proposed amendment to the state constitution in Ohio on the ballot this November, Issue 1. This amendment would authorize the state to issue up to $200MM of bonds to fund payments to any veterans of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq. The payments would be $100/month not to exceed $1,000 for anybody who served in the actual conflicts or $50/month not to exceed $500 for veterans who served elsewh…

Unfortunately, my travels to Stuttgart two weeks ago didn't allow me time to get to Munich; but I have experienced my fair share of German fests and loved each and every one of them! I realize a few on here may never have had the opportunity to attend a fest or the fests of fests, Oktoberfest; so here are someone else's pictures as why it is so popular. Beer, lederhosen and a lot of cleavage...a winning combination! Prost! M2

  16. TLDR: stop highlighting differences, set common standards, and emphasize common goals. The more differences are emphasized by diversity programs, the more people start to react to us/them divisions. Applicable to many qualifiers (race, sex, religion, etc). Another one. I can't find any articles on the internets yet, but the local news just reported on another attempted shooting, this time in New Mexico. The news story said that the volunteer fire chief of Velarde, NM (40 miles N of Santa Fe) showed up to a meeting of firefighters today wearing body armor and carrying an assault rifle. They said he allegedly pulled out a pistol and pointed it at the group. They charged him and he ran away. Police are still trying to track him down, armed and dangerous. It sounds very much like a copycat of the Aurora shooting, but thankfully with a very different outcome. https://www.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/1805/3687980?ti…

Folks, I am helping a friend to organize a NFL Survivor Pool as part of a fundraising effort for a local baseball team. I have discussed with a Moderator and this has been approved to post on here. A Survivor Pool is very simple - starting week 2, you pick any team to win. If that team wins, you move on. If that team loses, you are eliminated. There is some strategy involved because once you pick a team to win and it does, you cannot use that team again for the season. There is no point spread, it is all head to head. It's a lot of fun and for a good cause. You can side bet with friends, there is a message board to talk trash, etc....it is all for a good ca…

  22. Hey, guys and gals. First, a disclaimer: I'm not (yet) in the military and just a long shot old guy trying to get a Reserves/Guard UPT slot, so I am not posting this from the inside. That said, I am a big fan of the financial world/retirement options and, in my travels researching squadrons and poking around their pages for info today, I randomly stumbled across this article that could be important to some folks. It basically says, if you're one of the fortunate ones that can max out your TSP at $18,500 and you're in the BRS with a match program, you want to make sure you're spreading the $18,500 in contributions out over the ENTIRE year and not maxing out early. Ac…

(This last post was deleted. I figured it might be interesting though to many people who live in central Texas and are on the forums, so I'm going to try again. Feel free to move to another location on the board if its more appropriate.) Last year we started a group called Disruptive Thinkers - ATX to build cross talk between vets, active duty military and civilians. It's a group that meets regularly in Austin with attendance by many vets, local tech leaders along with some Air Force folks who make the drive from San Antonio. We also attract some from Camp Mabry and Ft. Hood. On Monday, Feb 3rd, we are hosting Col (ret) 'Shark' Garland, the former commandant of US…
