Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

WestJet today introduced a new state-of-the-art money-saving feature on board all flights aimed at countering the rising price of jet fuel. Effective today, WestJet will be using air mixed with helium in the ventilation system to lighten the weight of the aircraft. Helium is approximately 85 per cent lighter than nitrogen, which accounts for 80 per cent of the air we breathe. With a maximum takeoff weight of more than 150,000 pounds, adding helium to the air mix will provide fuel savings of approximately three to four per cent on board WestJet's Boeing Next-Generation 737s. This will, in turn, allow WestJet to pass the savings on to its guests. https://www.westjet.c…

Inactivist Party VI. Make Your Voice Heard Marching is for filthy hippies, writing your representatives is for toadies, and volunteerism is for college students seeking political-science credits. The only correct action is to complain about whatever bothers you, insistently and repeatedly, on internet message boards. And, as a member of the Inactivist Party, there is one main issue that you should focus on above all others: How society is filled with a bunch of whiners who never shut up.

Looked liked a blown tire and/or brake fire. Either way, what caught my attention was the fact that numerous people were evacuating the jet with their luggage. WTF? I'm sorry, if I'm evacuating from a jet that's on fire...I'm not stopping to grab shit. Fox News Link

https://youtu.be/UUFO8AGMwic Video of the colonel being hounded by a flat earther creep. The colonel shows remarkable restraint (IMHO) until the creep just poked him too long and the intrepid colonel decks the SOB. This will warm the cockles of your heart. Hats off to the colonel!!! He's 74, by the way.

Odd request here,... If anyone has a copy of AFR 35-10, ACC Sup, from back in the 1990's, please let me know. I need some info out of it. It might even be in 36-2903, ACC Sup shortly after they changed it to the 36- series.

  11. Recently I've come across some collegiate level education that's free online. This has potential to be pretty beneficial if you're prepping to go to school full time or if you're just looking to get ahead of the curve. The Educational Portal offers credit for the courses taken upon completion of a proficiency exam. I'm not sure of all the details, but if you're seeking an undergraduate degree, it seems to be a pretty good deal. Or you can always brush up on your Algebra in order to talk trash to your kid's 7th grade teacher. Educational Portal MIT also has some stuff. I haven't sifted through much of it, but it looks valuable. MIT Open Courseware If an…

https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/01/30/president-obama-announces-more-key-administration-posts President Obama nominated Miranda Ballentine for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment, and Logistics. She is currently employed as the Director for Sustainability, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Facilities for Wal-Mart since 2008. The title is a probably too harsh, as she likely had some good environmental programs and efforts while at Wal-Mart. Of course, since we're talking about Wal-Mart, saying you improved their sustainability is like saying you reduced the number of food-poisoning incidents at Golden…

  14. When an aircraft fleet is moving bases or otherwise going away, I imagine the 100's of families leaving as well will affect the local housing market. Am I going to have trouble selling or renting my house? Obvious answer seems like yes, but how bad will it be, and should I/could I do something 1-2 years in advance? (like sell early and rent my own house before it happens) Anyone go through something like this?

  15. As you may know the bulk of D-Day activity started 70 years ago today, 6 June 1944. However, the first 'element' of the invasion sailed not on 6 June but actually on 4 June. The element was composed of 4 miniature submarines that sailed at dark from England. Their mission was to approach the Normandy beaches and sit offshore, occasionally raising their periscopes to recon the proposed landing area. With over 7,000 ships, boats and other surface craft ready to embark there was the obvious concern to keep the advantage of surprise. The next duty of the mini subs was to surface at a prearranged time and shine a west pointing beacon so those 7,000 vessels would have som…

I have a bunch of issued uniform items that I either never used, were the wrong size, etc. Along with about 2 pairs of brand new boots I bought years ago that just don't fit right. I could try to sell them but I dont have the boxes still. Not looking to make a profit, just wanting to get them out of my possession. Obviously dumping them off at my local goodwill is not an option. Are there places it is OK to donate these to, on base?

  18. Not a lot in the media about this. The two innocent victims tragically killed during a terrorist siege at a Sydney cafe have been named as cafe manager Tori Johnson and barrister Katrina Dawson. Mr Johnson, 34, was shot dead after he heroically tried to wrestle the gun from the hostage-taker inside the Lindt cafe in Martin Place just after 2am on Tuesday morning. Ms Dawson, a 38-year-old mother of three children under 10, later died in hospital after being held hostage for more than 16 hours. She was a barrister at Eight Selborne Chambers in Sydney's Phillip Street, opposite the Lindt cafe. It comes after revelations the remaining hostages made a…

I've never paid attention to Kern's publications, and I have little knowledge of him. I seem to recall from past posts that there are some that do not agree with his opinions, especially in the single-pilot regime. I am considering him as a guest speaker for an event and would like your opinions if you have seen him talk/present. Thanks.

I have a friend with a small but successful high tech company that builds computer hardware. They want to hire a former military person that has an engineering degree (obtained before or after their Service... doesn't matter). I think they are not pleased with their current prospects right out of college, and want someone mature that can deal with life. Where can employers go to advertise for such non-flying tech jobs? I'll pass on any suggestions. Thanks.

Does anyone else have one not showing up on mypay? I have one for every year I've been in the AF other than 2015. I contacted two finance offices today and the only information I've been able to get is that "all tax documents are ready". No one can explain why there isn't one. I don't know if it's a mistake or if it's all 0's, so the system didn't make one. I went on multiple TDYs, so I'd think there would be something on it. Could it be for only DITY moves? I think 2015 might be the only year I haven't PCS'd.

Hey y'all, I was a little more active on here a few years back when applying to guard units but have lurked off & on since then. I live in Houston where, as most are aware, we had some pretty gnarly flooding from Hurricane Harvey. As shitty as the situation has been for so many in the area, it has largely brought out the best in people. My wife and I were lucky enough to be spared from anything serious, but homes just a few blocks away were inundated with floodwater. Watching USCG helicopters snag folks from rooftops just a few streets over was pretty surreal. The other day, I watched a -130 refueling a couple pavehawks directly over my neighborhood. I grew up around …

https://www.npr.org/2017/12/15/570810197/u-s-army-green-berets-accused-from-within-of-lowering-standards An unnamed SFQC cadre member wrote a letter talking about how the culture at the SFQC has changed to drive graduation numbers up instead of getting the right guy for the job. Pretty damning accusations that sound very similar to a lot of the complaints I hear from the UPT bros. I think the author(s) raise interesting points with not too much in the way of emotional grandstanding. Also, the response from the 2 Star is interesting in his defense of treating the objective measurements as diagnostics and not pass/fail events. Thoughts?
