Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  1. I think that the world view of America is that it is a country rooted in the deepest sense of patriotism and respect for its armed forces... so the idea that one of America's national sporting bodies (and associated teams) was taking money to salute the troops is a little shocking. The Pentagon paid 14 NFL teams $5.4 million to 'salute troops' https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/the-pentagon-paid-14-nfl-teams-dollar54-million-to-salute-troops/ar-BBjFQq9?ocid=iehp

With the presidential debate going on tonight and the approaching elections, the following questioned popped in my head: does a specific political party have more effect over the other on the Air Force? I.e. Budgets, Leadership, etc.

All I am interviewing Gen "Hawk" Carlisle, ACC CC, next week. He retires this Spring. Any questions you think I should put to him?

  4. In the days after 9/11 it became apparent we had problems dealing with low slow flyers. Through the years there have been several suggestions on how to deal with the issue. For a while it was even suggested the Light Attack fleet would offer a solution. Over the past few weeks there have been NUMEROUS TFR violations around the county and Live ATC has recorded many of the interactions. I listened to a few the past few days and it appears we still have issues. Without ATC we would have a very difficult time finding and in some cases maintaining contact.

Since it’s been about ten months since the pullout from Afghanistan and the failure of wearing reflective belts and having our PT shirts tucked in to achieve total victory, has the shoe clerk moved on? Or is he/she doubling down? It would be unusual for your typical martinet to be introspective and re-evaluate his/her choice of leadership style but who knows.

Hey everyone, I just recently washed out of a fighter B course. It was for many reasons, but ultimately it came down to me getting behind the jet a lot more than I care to admit. I struggled in the program and I gave it my best shot but things sadly did not pan out for me on the fighter side of the house. I’m hoping to hear from others that may have been in my shoes before on what’s next for me and what options I could have available. Flying aircraft is and forever will be my dream, and I will do anything to make sure I can keep my wings and stay in a seat. Haven’t really heard of much of a timeline for me as an active duty guy but want to do all …

I just read on FB that the Bird in Hand at Mildenhall is closing due to the gate being extended or something like that? I have not stayed there in years and when I did I often stayed in one of the newer billeting buildings so I’m having a hard time remembering the place.

  11. I made a program a while back to help my wife and I pick names for our kids. I decided I wanted to see just how good the newest AI models were at coding (spoiler alert, incredibly good) and reconstruct the program with all the bells and whistles and a unified login system. I'm probably about a day or so away from beta testing, so if anyone would like to use the program, just send me a PM and I'll get you and your spouse set up with accounts. The Baby Namer 9000 allows two parents to independently rate names from the social security database then compare their ratings to instantly see what names were favored by both. You can also see statistics goi…

Not normally a baseball fan but the regionals were full of drama this year with the #1 and #2 schools both getting knocked out in the first round of Regionals. Also some drama with some of the Florida schools: 1. FSU made it to the Super Regionals but not without the star pitcher caught on film telling a Mississipp State layer to “Sit down… sit the FUCK DOWN. lil inbred bitch.” How nice. 2. Next up Was U of Florida and their lunatic coach Kevin O’Sullivan who had an absolute meltdown when his game was delay one hour. The University justifiably forced him to apologize and karma hit him twice with the Gators knocked out in the Regionals when they were expe…

Anybody on here ever mess with a remote controlled plane? I can see the witty responses now (because I've got about five quick ones I could fire off), but really, what's a decent plane for a semi-beginner? I can learn quickly and have a little experience with these things. I was thinking of this airplane ( https://h1069956.hobbyshopnow.com/products/...sp?prod=PKZ1500 - or the Focke-Wulf 190). I don't feel like I need to get into a whole project of building one from the ground up just yet - just something I can get a little instant gratification from that performs well for around $200 or so. I do know one "senior leader" on this board who is a fairly avid R/C plan…

Officials bring back missile badges, wings I don't know much about the badges of other AFSCs, but is this the badge that the spwings replaced or were there two different pocket rockets once upon a time? Does this mean the spwings are dead, are is space now a separate entity from missiles?

From CNN.com Blink-182's Barker critically injured in plane crash (CNN) -- A man who came across a fiery jet crash saw former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and disc jockey Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein trying to extinguish the flames on their bodies by ripping off their clothing. "We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," William Owens told CNN affiliate WIS in Columbia, South Carolina. "I felt ill or sick to think that these lives were snuffed out at that point." The two men were in critical condition with extensive burns Saturday. The crash killed four other people on board, authori…

https://www.whalepower.com/drupal/?q=node/2 Thought you pilot-engineers would find this interesting. This company is looking mostly at applications for turbines, but if what they claim is true (less drag, greater lift, drastically increased stall angle) it could have some pretty interesting application to aircraft. Thursday, March 06, 2008 Whale-Inspired Wind Turbines Mimicking the bumps on humpback-whale fins could lead to more efficient wind turbines. By Tyler Hamilton Marine scientists have long suspected that humpback whales' incredible agility comes from the bumps on the leading edges of their flippers. Now Harvard University researchers hav…
