Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  1. Started by outbreak,

I'm deploying in a few months for the first time in about 3 years. It's a non-flying gig. For some background, I'm the "gun guy." I have my own preferences on holsters that I've come to by trial and error. My last rote had me flying, wearing a bag, and a shoulder holster was the best option, for me. Now, we're all in OCP's, So a belt holster seems an easier and better option. I haven't been able to find an OI or AFI that dictates what kind of holster may be used for an M9 at the big OEF bases. What I need to know is requirements on position, material, retention, as well as magazine carriers. The easiest way is if someone can point me to the written regs …

Thanks to COVID I went ahead and put together a home gym. Our ANG base gym is closed until fall... Took forever to piece together with everything sold out and back-ordered online, but it's pretty sweet being able to lift at home. FYSA Rep Fitness and Vulcan Strength have 5% military discounts, Rogue doesn't unfortunately. Anyone else out there doing this?

I got into the hobby of home brewing beer over the last year and would like to keep it going after relocating this year. I'm heading off toward the end of this summer for my first training base and wondered if anyone has ever had experience with someone in their squadron brewing beer. I'm hoping to make it into something that I can do with my class and maintain as a weekend hobby/stress reliever.

Looking for some feedback and solutions of others. I have a lot of porn....errr personal files and I am looking for a backup solution that is safe and allows for world-wide access. I am not a big fan of the cloud services...giving big tech all my data is not high on my list and personally I think there will be a large cloud cyber attack in the near future. I've looked at several home cloud options and have ruled our Western Digital after the big hack and some nefarious nonsense around requiring hard drive replacement every three years. As of now I am thinking the Synology DS1522+ which I would set up as a Raid 1. We have a lot of old family pictures and vid…

With the threat of a Chavez invasion (backed by Nicaragua and Cuba) if the deposed Honduras president isn't reinstated, what do you fellas think we will do. So far President Obama denounced the "coup". From what I have been reading, the actions by their congress and supreme court were a result of Zelaya's attempted violation of their constitution as well as his contempt of the supreme court by pushing a referendum to extend his presidency just like Chavez did in Venezuela. Nicaragua shares a border with Honduras and they are not too far from Venezuela's Flankers. Discuss.

  7. Not a lot in the media about this. The two innocent victims tragically killed during a terrorist siege at a Sydney cafe have been named as cafe manager Tori Johnson and barrister Katrina Dawson. Mr Johnson, 34, was shot dead after he heroically tried to wrestle the gun from the hostage-taker inside the Lindt cafe in Martin Place just after 2am on Tuesday morning. Ms Dawson, a 38-year-old mother of three children under 10, later died in hospital after being held hostage for more than 16 hours. She was a barrister at Eight Selborne Chambers in Sydney's Phillip Street, opposite the Lindt cafe. It comes after revelations the remaining hostages made a…

First question: I understand I can take $10k penalty-free from my roth IRA for a first time home buying down payment. Halfway through my twenties, is it smarter to use this or take out the money from a taxed non-ira account? Both accounts are long term 8-10% mutual funds. Second question: If I take out the $10k from my roth, which I understand will remove contributions first, what if I can't close on a house and don't end up using it...can I put that money back as if nothing happened? I've maxed out my contributions ever year, so would I be able to put that $10k back as a whole, or am I stuck back with the ~$5k per year limit? According to https://www.wellsfa…

  17. Has anyone completed any advanced education and sent their transcripts to AFIT? According to their website, you just send your transcripts to their address or e-mail address and they will update your record on vMPF. It's been a few weeks now since I sent my stuff over and nothing is updated. I did get an e-mail the day after I sent the transcripts saying AFIT had downloaded my transcript. What kind of time frame have you guys seen for them to update it?

  18. On the current "I only want to be a pilot" thread, there are a couple of dudes with four generations of military flying. One of the things that adds to the growing divide between the military and the general civilian population is a lack of familiarity with the military. Related to that is the anecdotal evidence of sons/daughters of military dudes following in those footsteps. So my question (I'd post a poll if I could figure it out) is how many generations of military flying do you have? If you are the first, what fired you up to pursue your vocation (Doesn't have to be the guy/gal driving, anybody who straps in would be welcome). If a succeeding generation, w…

  19. When an aircraft fleet is moving bases or otherwise going away, I imagine the 100's of families leaving as well will affect the local housing market. Am I going to have trouble selling or renting my house? Obvious answer seems like yes, but how bad will it be, and should I/could I do something 1-2 years in advance? (like sell early and rent my own house before it happens) Anyone go through something like this?

  22. Had an idea and looking for discussion on it. So a draft of the "best and brightest" is a no go and would never return to the USA unless the barbarians were at the gates, even then I think many would shirk it so if not their kids then their money... instead of a draft used to pull all of the socio-economic strata of America together to cause the connected, priviledged, wealthy and powerful to be cautious on the use of military forces (really conventional boots on mainly what I'm saying but applicable to other uses of Military Force to some degree) why not by law state all military operations outside of the CONUS (routine and contingency) be assed on personal income …

Heard about the horrible news today that famous Warbird Pilot and Air Racer Howard Pardue died after his F8F crashed on takeoff. I remember his airplane from the time I was 5 years old going to AIrshows. His solo aerobatic routine to Phantom of the Opera was one of my favorite air show acts ever!

The Hunter discussion tends to block the next President thread so feel to vent or defend in here. As a lead off you can review this CBS interview of IRS Whistleblower Senior Supervisor Agent Gary Shapley. It has been repeatedly asserted that because Trump appointed Delaware U.S. Attorney Andrew Weiss that all is well with the Hunter Biden Plea deal. The Whistleblower gives some very compelling testimony otherwise, AND indicates DOJ stopped a deeper look at the connections to Joe Biden. As of now it looks like either Weiss or Garland is lying. Weiss is supposed to do a Sunday show this weekend, will be interesting to hear his side.
