I don’t know, that’s giving them lots of credit. Most non flyers have no idea what plane is flown at their base.

I’ll never forget this hag at LRS at Yokota who was explaining that the C-130s were on the ramp to bring the postal mail. She was a tech..

I’ll never understand that willful ignorance. I know it makes me a total try harder but when I worked at the WIC I made sure I learned what satellite was which or what NKE could do what effect (already mastered a computer visrecce). It’s pretty amazing how far something that simple (that takes a max of 30 minutes) goes to helping build a cohesive team.

That's cute.  Be sure to tell the PJ that after he pulls your ass out of some shit hole.  Everyone who's been there knows that the color of the nomex doesn't actually matter so long as it works.  F the nonners.  They play no part in a warrior's self esteem.

Relax dog I was (mostly) joking. Wear whatever you like/what is most comfortable/fits your mission the best. I have no doubt other garments outperform the green bag in many ways.

But not in uniqueness, heritage, or looking dope.. which is probably why the Air Force will get rid of it some day. When I see flying group and wing CCs wearing OCPs or the two piece that tells me the green bags days are numbered. Because anything special or cool going on in the flying ops world must eventually be neutered in the name of inclusivity and preventing hurt feelings.

Good points all.  I'll increase the gain on my sarcasm detector.

We’ll I’m sure everyone knew nsplayr was a NAV regardless.

Kinda obvious when he has to follow a pilot to make it in the door.

Back in the 80's and early 90's many Crew Chiefs had additional duty as Flight Mechanics and were awarded enlisted aircrew wings. Some units sent them to survival and SERE trng and after 2 years of active flying they became permanent. Also, SAC awarded Master Crew Chief or Technician badges which were not easy to get rewarded. But if you left those units to a TAC later ACC unit Chiefs wasted no time by telling Crew Chiefs to rip them off, plus if you wanted to see some little bitch's wear an issued leather flight jacket for the once-a-year blues inspection or a PME class with wings above your ribbon rack.

That is valid, but it’s also less satisfying than showing up at the finance desk in your bag, sleeves rolled, sunglasses on top of your head, looking around like:

I keed…mostly 😎

Well what's the fing point doing that when finance is closed anyway.

I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military ... of being ‘woke’ or something else because we’re studying some theories that are out there,” Milley said.

No, you’re still not a pilot. RPA operator needs to be the official name.

Strong argument you've got going there.

How this dipshit still has a job and hasn’t been dragged in front of congress for his epic failure in Afghanistan is beyond me. Talking to a lot of my grunt buddies…one of the least respected “members” of the SOF community.

A made up name about themselves. What’s in a name? Strong argument YOU have there.

I'm sure that counter-argument works well in the bar.

💯

Miley and Austin disgrace the service and would resign if they had any honor.  Petty incompetent political creatures.

Ahhhh yes...because rpa pilots gave themselves that name. I forgot that RPA pilots run the USAF.

I also didn't present an argument or recommendation for either side. I simply pointed out that it doesn't make sense to recommend a name change from pilot to operator if you're going to keep the rpa designation in front of the word operator.

They actually did. And then the Air for signed off on it. Some of the leadership in the community was tired of people saying unmanned so they recommended a change. Circa 2009

I keep seeing this thing getting kicked around.  Where, though, did it actually come from?

They actually changed it because the general public picked up on the connotation that "drones" or "unmanned" aerial vehicles were autonomous and making kill/no kill decisions algorithmically without human input. The change in terminology was to emphasize that despite the fact the aircrew member is not on the aircraft, it is still controlled by a human being, a person, who is making decisions and inputs. This predates any General Officer with significant RPA experience and was entirely done to reduce public resistance to the GWOT.

The term Pilot comes from Pilotus, which means "Rudder" or more appropriately, one who steers a rudder. Its also used to refer to the person who steers the helm of a ship or boat. Aircraft pilots dont have exclusive use of the word. TAMI-21 imprisoned me for 3 years in that world. However, the professionalism and knowledge I saw about air operations often surpassed the manned aircraft pilots I worked with. I have no issue with RPA pilots adopting the term. Nothing in the etymology of the term "pilot" has anything to do with actual presence on a vessel and more to do with the actual control and steering of the vessel.

During my RPA stint, I felt more like a system operator than a pilot. There were very few times I felt like I was piloting something. It made me miss the hell out of manned flying which I eventually returned to.
