Normally the hotels are booked up pretty far out so 4 miles away is not bad at all. As far as airports I'd just go with which ever has the better flight for your schedule (MCO/TPA). SFB would add another hour to the drive. Overall similar vibes to Oshkosh. There is no beer tent like there is right outside of Oshkosh but sometimes people will throw parties on the grounds after hours. If you go on vansairforce it will just be a bunch of old dudes complaining about how they have to walk really far from homebuilt camping. Are you going to Oshkosh this year?

I'm partial to RVs but there is a reason why there are so many of them flying. You can fly quickly and still land on a lot of backcountry strips and go camping.

Yes, random AR can be approved by center. As far as AR off of published tracks in the NAS there are ways to coordinate with center to get approval for that kind of stuff. I'd recommend looking at the JO 7610.4 lots of good information, it is FOUO so you might have to go through your pubs shop or OGV to get it. If you are lazy and can settle for the 90% solution filing to a track/anchor and requesting random once joined up usually is no problem.
