  4. Springer, now we are the Dinos that we talked about and with....In the early 70s, stationed in USAFE, I met an O-6 during NATO Crested Cap that asked me to help him plan a Low Level into France. As I recall, I think he was the CC of the "Tacos" (New Mexico ANG) flying A-7s. When asked the Route he wanted to fly and why, he told me he had flown P-51s and wanted to see his WW2 Airfield, even if it was no longer there. Flew three wars. I think he was probably about a young 55 or so!

  5. On the flip side I got to learn Part 121, ORD, JFK, LAX, MIA all during COVID, when there were only 5 planes moving. Hell I cleared Runway 18 at EHAM and got to taxi to park with the tower (about a 5 mile taxi) as we were the only one moving on the entire airport. But you gotta love follow the greens man. Everyone needs to get on board with that system.

  7. My favorite: the ground controller that leaves the mic keyed while she thinks through her next move. ”UA534 continue on bravo then, uhhhmm, no that’s not gonna work, just keep going and I’ll get back to you, break, let’s see who’s next, oh yeah, DL1276 I see you already parked on the bravo pad, that will work let me know when ramp is ready for you, who am I forgetting…” FFS let go of the fucking mic already!

  9. Ammo is heavy and more compact than cinder blocks. I think a case of 45ACP weighs about 25lbs. Partial DITY that stuff instead, and then you have ammo at the end of the travels.

  11. Dont try to pull financial scams on TDYs and PCSs. This is not the kind of thing you wanna start doing ever, let alone as a brand new Amn or Lt. That's what dirtbags do. I sold my body to fat chicks on the weekends. In all seriousness, @brabus is spot on with keeping the flying consistent. If that means taking a loan, do it intelligently. You can't effectively learn while only flying once a month.

  12. ORD was my first taxi out as an airline pilot. Dude, talk about a wake up call. Luckily I had a good captain who looked at me right before I called for clearance and said "wait, this is your first time ever taxing a commercial aircraft?" "Yep" "Ok, write this down" and proceeded to give me what he expected the taxi instructions to be. He was 95% correct and a huge help. He also said 'don't be surprised if they read off your taxi instructions and then go on to the next airplane without giving you a chance to read back'. I think I said "WTF, can they do that?" "This is Chicago, FAA regs are more like suggestions..."

  15. I remember my first trip to ORD at my regional. We got on the A taxiway and the alley was blocked, so the Captain just kept making right turns between A and B without a clearance. He's said just don't stop and and they couldn't care less what we do, if you stop, they yell at you lol. I've unfortunately flown there enough to know what taxi route they'll give me, but I avoid the place big time. One of my bids is actually avoid long layovers at ORD, because of the long ass drive into downtown during rush hour. This is of the many reasons I like flying the 717 into all the burgs & villes throughout the eastern U.S. You almost never have wait on anything, no conga line, rarely any "flow," one taxiway to one of the 5 gates, security is a breeze, and the people are nice. The hardest part about these airports is sometimes you have to turn the lights on yourself and occasionally you have use your phone to get a clearance.

  16. This. Peacetime managers vs wartime leaders. Some people are good at both but many aren’t. 2 different skill sets and not being at war it’s hard to know who is actually a good wartime leader.

  17. There are various grants and loan options. IMO, it’s better to get your finances prepped so you can afford to be consistent (2-3x week ideally) vs. “pay cash” as you’re able (i.e. very inconsistent if you don’t have high income). The loan will be worth it. Also the reserves may offer some options, so look into that.

  18. Either you misunderstood or they gave you horrible advice. Good on you for asking, it was not a dumb question. As mentioned above, watch out for common “make an extra buck” scams like cinder blocks in a trailer, moving an extra car in a trailer and claiming that as HHG weight, etc. There’s a lot of “tricks” out there that people claim is no big deal, but will actually screw you very badly if caught. Never worth it.

  20. Am I reading this correctly that the plan is put your parent’s electricity bill in your name (or similar) and that’s good enough for BAH? That is 100% fraud and will fuck you.

  21. If you are single, live at home with your parents, and then enlist -> pipeline, there’s not a case for BAH to be paid that I am aware of. You have no dependents and your housing will be provided to you while at school. I 1000% do not recommend fucking around here, finding out will be painful. $10K is nothing in the scope of what you will make in your career, even if that’s just one term of enlistment. If your details are different, e.g. you are married and your spouse is staying back in your local area in a home you currently rent or own, etc., you may have a legal way to be entitled to BAH. Good luck and may you have a long and prosperous career!

  24. Is the army really doing a better job? That's a real question. As far as I've seen the people in all services who make it to the top today are at best, morons, and at worst, hypocritical Yes-men. Although I admit I don't seem to see much about the Navy, so maybe they're doing better? It's very hard to tell if someone is good at something when you're not doing the thing. And we are not in a war, so it's pretty hard to pick out good wartime leaders. We are in a time of massive administrivia, and so unsurprisingly the military has no problem picking out the best paper pushers.

  25. LISTEN KID. I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at Embry Riddle. I'm out here doing ground ops every night. Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the taxiway for 48 minutes. - Roger Murdock
