  1. I swear I saw an airline pilot thread around here somewhere...

  2. I check off all of those... so do I get to join some sort of "super-privilege" club that will get me VIP seating at games and do cool things like that? "Owning class"? How is the American population so dumb that they cannot see that these people are not mentally living in 21st century America but mentally living in the reconstruction era and think they're dealing with ex-slave owners? If the people spouting this stuff actually believe it, they should be in a mental institution. The only "privilege" I have was growing up in the care of a loving, two parent house that gave me the work ethic to succeed. The same exact type of house that these people are actively trying to destroy. And if being a Christian is a "privilege" here on earth, then convert to Christianity. I think they will soon find that being a real Christian is not a privilege in this life.

  4. Doing wide body FO, I usually work 9 days or 12 if I pick up an extra trip. Had a CA ask me why I didn't bid CA then tell me the senior FOs should bid domestic CA to share their knowledge. My response was "Hell no!".... Along with some other colorful descriptive commentary on domestic flying.

  11. Former 11X. Completed my ATP as part of pre-deployment training in another aircraft. Departed the fix during sequestration when they had too many pilots. Completed an AF funded STEM PhD. Current engineering job is roughly double new FO pay, no commuting, no bidding, home every night. Airline pay would probably catch up in 3-5 years, but my plan is to be fully retired by then and RVing around the country. I fly ultralights to scratch the flying itch.

  12. It's way cheaper to fly now than when I was a kid flying back and forth to Taiwan every couple of years. TPE to BNA was $1,000 in 1976, fast forward to the last time I flew that a few years ago (2015) it was $1,200. I just now looked ... $939 rt. I realize prices change constantly but that's insanely cheap.

  13. Not a poke in the eye, this statement just got me thinking. When did we start looking at flying in the weather and pushing it hard in training as a bad thing? It's the military. We're supposed to be able to deliver anytime, anywhere, in any conditions. In my last 5 years before retiring last year, I saw anything that even approached that attitude as being reviled. In a different world (think Cold War...which we're in again...) this crew MIGHT (depending on what actually happened) have been commended for bringing the jet all the way back and mostly in tact despite what appears to have been an airborne fire. Instead, the default now is 'who's to blame' and 'why did we take so much risk'. The military culture used to embrace risk takers. Go look up documentaries of how the British SAS/SOE used to train their operatives. Death was normal and expected. Hell dudes in the USAF in the 50's used to routinely crash jets. Not abhorant, just expected and normal risk. Save your life, save the jet if you can. Get yelled at. Go do it again tomorrow. Do difficult and dangerous things specifically because doing those things makes you better. Now...not so much. Observation, not critique.

  14. Anyone who supports shit like this or worse, actually believes in it, are the dumbest motherfuckers to waste oxygen in our earth's history thus far. Its well beyond "everyone's entitled to their opinion," and squarely lies in the realm of "you lack the mental processing power of even a below average adult mind."

  15. When I was on the WIC staff from 17-20, every fighter WPS had a Major DO. Pretty wild stuff that it’s CC’s now. Also, if there’s any A1 flesh peddlers out there, I’ll go fly a fighter and babysit all the young bucks as an O-5. Service Before Self. Preferably Lakenheath or Kadena or Hill or some other nice place. No Korea. And I gotta fly a lot. And I get to delegate everything to the O-4’s for their leadership development. Meet those, and I’m yours. Oh yeah…only TX course and Santa Claus IP’s. That’s it.

  16. Yup, they can only have those cheap fares so long. After they've created a name and burned through an asston of cash, it's time to make some money. Then the fees show up and people lose their mind. Turns out it costs money to move people by air, but people think air travel is a born right, so they lose their minds when they have to pay more. Not long ago a buddy wad like why is it so damn expensive to fly these days? I looked and I could go round trip from DTW to LAX for $500 or CUN for $600. I'm like seems cheap for what you're getting... which is your ass parked in a chair in the sky, moving at 500 mph to a place that wasn't even reachable for 99% of Americans just a few decades ago lol. It's probably still cheaper than it's ever been to fly.

  19. I get it. We fly and are qualified to operate in bad weather. However, you’ve got to look at the bigger picture. It’s cold as shit there, first day back from the long holidays and the weather was horrible. Approach a day like that anticipating the worst case scenario and break the error chain on the ground by cancelling a training line. You can do it another day. Sounds like these guys experienced that worst case scenario (serious EP/jet on fire). The accident report will be interesting to read. I’m curious how much blame goes to the SOF or leadership for leaning too far forward.

  21. Nothing wrong with your decision. Back in the day I commuted 1200 miles for 25 years but no way would I commute now. And after 4 ocean crossing in 6 days I was wiped out. I was single at the time, can only imagine the pressure on getting back home if you are married. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the job but it was a means to an end. Made enough by 59 and exited. You can always build or buy an airplane. I did and have never enjoyed flying as much as I have now.

  22. My math was 1 day commute there, 1 day commute home for each 7 day trip, two trips per month for a total of 4 days commuting. This is what I assumed as a FNG FO regional as the bad side of normal. I would assume it gets much better after 1-2 years. This was my conclusion after anecdotal conversations with my friends that went the airline route and reading multiple forums posts. There is only 1 legacy domicile within 2 hours of where I live, with no guarantees I would get that, so I assumed commuting (don't want to move), which really affected my decision. YMMV.

  32. Don't forget that the Ryan Air airport is up to 2 HOURS from the city named on the ticket. Made the mistake of flying Ryan Air to "Oslo". Two hour bus ride from the airport and we finally got to actual Oslo.

  37. I'm sure I will regret weighing in on this, but do you seriously believe this? Like actually think people "punish women for existing" and hate them? Based on the stance on abortion, they hate women?

  39. I’m currently on mil leave finishing up my retirement but looking at the January Bid lines out of Orlando they varied from 60-80 hours, some of them with 18 days off for the month. Since I’ve been gone for a couple years, I’m not sure what the high time flyers are getting, so I’ll leave that question for an active guy. Before I left though, the sky was the limit and as long as it was legal and you could put it on your board, you could bank $$$. Personally, life is great. I ended up having to take my ex back to court and won full custody of the kids (hence the reason I am putting the airline life on hold temporarily and finishing up the mil career). We are all extremely happy. I did end up getting remarried and she has been amazing and my kids all call her “mom”. My older two have pretty much nothing to do with their birth mom, and my youngest is the only one that goes for any sort of visitation. It’s funny what a little bit of wisdom, maturity and life experience will do for the second time around. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

  40. RUMINT in the bomber community is a very serious EP (jet on fire) prior to the approach. Weather was an eyelash above ILS mins. First day back flying after Christmas/New Years. Helluva first day back…

  41. Internal struggle? It just sounds like you, and he, have issues with trying to punish women just for existing. You both should probably get some help on why you hate them and can't provide leadership when you can't control them. Even so, the AF and DoD are better off with people in that mindset not in leadership positions. Or really in at all. Your bigotry is old and worn out.
