Yeah, nothing more thrilling than the drive to work. I wake up every morning refreshed and excited to hit the road. Hell, sometimes I leave my wallet at work so I have an excuse to do an extra lap after dinner.

Earlier this week I learned I'm a dirt bag because I didn't go to school. Now I'm learning I'm guilty of child abuse for cursing in front of my daughter. I'm worried about what the next revelation the board brings up will be.

No. Some of us have self control. Avoiding the one-mistake Air Force does not mean all mistakes are forgivable. I was court martialed, found not guilty, punished after the fact, and kicked out for it (thank god!). I'm the last person in the world to be against redemption stories. But if you haven't figured out by 30 that you can't drink and drive, let alone as a leader who has surely given God knows how many briefings and punishments on the subject, you don't get to hit the reset button. I'm not saying to kick the guy out, but leadership should be off the table IF he did it.

He went through ENJJPT during the "drones are as good as fighters" days. Didn't do as well as he'd liked, but got to fly. He's one of the best men I know. Enrolled kids in new school, wife got a new job she'd always wanted, put down money on a house they were going to close on this week. Then of course the USAF made a brilliant decision to NOT have him PCS 6 days before he was to close on that house. I'll let him say why - "So how do I explain what happened without violating Article 89 of the UCMJ? Last week, a… person… made a blanket decision to reject and/or revoke all waivers for T-38 pilots going to PIT. I required a waiver to become a T-38 instructor pilot. This was not because I didn’t have enough flight hours or an excessive number of Q-2 or Q-3s, but because following pilot training I hadn’t flown a fighter or a bomber. I flew the Herc, and that meant that I wasn’t as qualified to fly the T-38 as, say, a brand new fucking FAIP with 1/20th the flight hours and a decade less experience. But it's not just me, it's everyone. Blanket rejection and revocation of all waivers. None of it makes fucking sense to me." Pilot crisis is solved folks. Guess the airlines are done hiring.

I'm hoping self driving cars make this whole argument worthless in 30 years. Immagine a world with no DUI, no speeding tickets, no nodding off on 14 hour road trips. You text an app like Uber when you leave a place and a public self driving car with no han input required (other than destination) does the work for you. We're still a ways off but AI and new automotive sensor technology is going to bring us a long way.

Disagree completely. Thanks for being a part of the board and supporting your significant other. Go into this journey with open eyes and realize the path is a difficult one for the whole family. In many respects I believe it to be harder on the non-mil member. I hope some of the younger/more recent applicants can offer some good advice. Best of luck to you both. Talked to one of my fighter buddies out at Sheppard in the T-38 world. According to him, the T-38 PIT standard for non-11Fs is absolutely ridiculous. Those guys are being held to a completely different standard. Granted some guys don’t belong instructing in the T-38, but according to my buddy (a reservist who has been there for a decade) a political point is trying to be made. Take it for what it’s worth. And I'd allow that jail time for a first offense is probably a bit harsh. Since our prison system couldn't handle the sheer number of drunk drivers, I'd have to settle for a year suspension of driving privileges. But drunk driving is in a different solar system from distracted driving. Since you asked, I'm in favor of suspended driving privileges for distracted driving convictions.

Its taken about 13 months for me as well. After constant delays and generally not knowing what the hell whats going on, I started global stalking people and cold calling folks at NGB. Eventually, I found a few of the folks at A1/A6 that were kind to explain to me the process and they why it was taking so long. The HARM office should be your primary point of contact for everything NGB, but if you haven't learned to "trust, but verify" from your Army days of getting F'ed, you should do the same when dealing with admin stuff. @kona4breakfast is your package still at NGB? is it EPT, ARB or A1 accessions that you are waiting on? If I was smarter I would have stayed WO and not have gone to the O dark side. You live and you learn. S

Guardian, the whole point of the article is to make an argument that the stats aren’t telling the whole story. I’m not posting simply to “win” an argument, but to shed light on a very important emerging trend which isn’t getting the attention it deserves. If you read the article, they make a pretty compelling case as to why, in this instance, the statistics are incomplete. So yes, in some instances argument can be made based upon what’s likely true but isn’t necessarily statistically supported (yet.) The point of the argument is to drive better tracking. It’s widely accepted that the stats you’ve provided are misleading for a variety of reasons. Here’s a decent article on the topic. https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2017/10/18/467836.htm TLDR: while drunk driving stats are easily and closely monitored, distracted driving is much more difficult to pinpoint in accident reporting statistics. Actual distracted driving incidents are almost certainly much higher than your sources represent. But you’re probably right that it’s a different solar system, just not in the way you thought. Started on time. Took 7 months. The new syllabus, mx, and wx really messed things up for them. I think we were almost 40 training days behind the day we showed up.

I don't drink. For whatever the state says is illegal. I can't believe this this position is so controversial. You put lives at risk when you drive drunk, buzzed, or high. Period.

What about the rest of us in the E-4 to O-5 range? Are we good? Cause I feel like I drive better after a few drinks. I'm more cautious.

I have a pretty low tolerance for O-6s that drink and drive. Did he blow a marginal BAC that might be overturned by a blood test? Maybe. I’ll leave room for nuance. I personally wouldn’t write NJP till proven guilty or if wrongdoing is admitted. But I’d also remove him from any position of leadership until a conclusion is reached. Not driving drunk is one of the most basic of social responsibilities. An E-3 gets a chance to learn his way out of drunk driving. An O-6 has much, much higher expectations. Drunk driving convictions should have a mandatory 1-year jail sentence with driving privileges suspended. It’s one of the most deadly things in n the country.

Most of you are splitting hairs. I’m not talking about legitimately innocent people. I’m talking about people who committed the crime, found a loophole, and walked because of it. The integrity about the system and the cops and everything else is a straw man argument. If the guy did it, this is a purely ethical question. Does he deserve to be free of consequences? I agree with you that the system has to be free of issues regarding integrity. To the question of a one mistake AF, no it shouldn’t be a one mistake AF. There is however a chasm of difference between a mistake and a crime. Just like there’s a massive difference between hitting a child while DUI and just DUI, but they’re both still crimes. I guess I’m harsh because while I’d be very lenient with legitimate mistakes that were unintended consequences, I will hammer a guy as hard as possible for a DUI. He absolutely can turn his life around, but not in my unit. That is a risk I’m not willing to take. You tell me, is a guy more likely to kill people if he ignores 12 hours bottle to throttle, or if he gets in his car and drives home through a neighborhood while DUI? We’d FEB a guy immediately for that, but you think they should be able to move up the ranks for doing it in a car? I know that is a harsh stance. They want younger versions of themselves. The system worked for them, therefore the system must be good. I quote again from The Talking Heads, "Same as it ever was..." The new and improved two-line PRF is a sop so that it looks like "they are doing something." And for the drones at A1, et al, it was a way to get The Man off their collective back and earn themselves one of those coveted strats. This is no different than the switch from the old weighted OERs to the new and improved "meets standard" OPR/PRF, and so on back to 1947. And before that back to the founding of our military officer corps. Largely, who you know along with luck/timing rules and always will. Make informed decisions knowing the rules of the game whether written or not.

I am starting to lose track how many times I have now seen officers who have only been stratified at the CGO level i.e. their O-5 PRFs were written when they were senior captains, surpass above average performing FGOs. This is the most frustrating part of the whole promotion process. FGO and CGO have totally different levels of expectations. This is what makes me believe the only real thing the board looks at is the bottomline strat and where it came from. They could not care less about an officer's upbringing. It also makes me extremely cynical about the new promotion system. Why would it be any different if there are only two lines. Certainly since strats and DPs still exist on the PRF, what will drive senior raters to more closely examine an officer's record? Its emblematic of our culture where 15 second news clips suffice for being "well informed". My solution would be to scrap the PRF system altogether. Let the full record speak for itself.

Spoiler alert...it will sound the same as someone who makes it IPZ except the bottom line will have a #1 strat from either a WG/CC or above. Pathways to achieve this feat are 1. be a wing exec 2. be an aide/exec for a flag officer (preferably as a captain) 3. work a staff gig for a flag officer (again preferably as a captain). Better yet, make sure you check the box on just one flying assignment to ensure you have enough time to do one of the above and then PCS to a fellowship program to ensure your O-5 PRF is written as a CGO. This way the board can see how fantastic of a CGO you are without muddying the waters with FGO performance.

It means a lot. It was out of Pawnman's control but he should have had more breadth of experience and progression in responsibility. For the young people reading this, continue to work hard but make sure your duty title is commensurate or exceeds your rank/TIR/TIS. Know the key duty positions at each level of command as you progress in rank and you should be switching jobs about every 1.5 years. As much as we like to think that if we just keep working hard our boss will take care of us, the truth is your careers needs to be actively managed (not backstabbing) by you and your boss. Your boss's effort to take care of you depends on your performance, politics, favoritism, available resources, his moral compass and etc. No one in the military is ever too valuable to leave a position/unit/command. We are all replaceable.

But that's what frustrates me the most about the public speaking class! I did exactly what the professor said. He said write and give a speech about whether you believe in hate crimes or not. It was choice. Yet I didn't and I was considered wrong, though it was an opinion based assignment. I guess I just have trouble getting use to how PC college is. I'm doing well in my business classes (I have A's in them so far) and I find the Business Communications class I'm taking easy. I know I can get all A's in my business classes. I simply just wanted to know if those B's and C's in my Gen Eds would matter in the future when a guard or reserve unit looks at my transcript. The two A's I got recently pulled my GPA up. I know I can do well do well in these business classes and get all A's. Sorry if I'm sounding so rude or whinny. I'm guess I'm frustrated (a lot of family issues going on at home) and I don't think taking it out on random strangers on the internet is going to help. (Especially on strangers who are suppose to help).
