I am a civilian that wants to fly fighters with the Guard for 10 years, and I know that the 10-year commitment to the ANG begins after getting wings. I haven't found a good source of information regarding this commitment, however. As such, my questions are only in regards after you get wings, since washing out prior to UPT graduation incurs no commitment. I have questions like: 1. What happens if you are medically disqualified from flying after being winged? (Also, where can I find more information on what can medically disqualify me?) 2. Under what conditions would that commitment be cancelled? 3. In what scenarios would one be committed to the ANG, but n…

Is it possible to join the National Guard or the Air Force Reserves as an Officer? It seems like all the information on the recruiting websites pertain to enlisting... Thanks in advance for the replies...

I separated from active duty 1.5yrs ago after 7yrs and 9mo of service. I was not RIF'd or VSP'd, had no remaining ADSC, and did not separate under any special program. While going through the separation process every time it came up in the paperwork or in dealings with MPF it was clear that on their end they believed I had no remaining Military Service Obligation. I was close, but just short of the 8yr mark, so my understanding was that they were wrong. However, not having any desire to voluntarily continue in an IRR capacity if I didn't have to, I kept my mouth shut figuring I might be on the positive end of a military paperwork f*ckup for once. I've been happ…

Hey all, was doing some research on guard units here in AZ and in trying to cast a wide net, I shot resumes over to the 161ARW and the 162d Wing. Going through the 162d wing site I saw they operate RC-26s under the 214th group in addition to F-16s but cannot find any info other than that. I would really like to shoot an application over to RC-26s on top of the 16s as it seems like an interesting mission and is close to home. Does anybody have any contact info or possibly any leads on if they hire for UPT slots? I have a feeling that they might not even operate the RC-26 anymore but can't find info on that either. Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Hi all, I tried to find info on another thread about this but couldn’t find what I was looking for. I was lucky enough to be picked up by a Guard unit and have been going through the post-hire process to include MEPS, FC1, and going to drill each month before training. I was hired out of state and have been taking PTO from my civilian job in order to attend these things. Am I required to take PTO from my civilian job if I am fulfilling a military related obligation? After a couple google searches I found some info on it but am not sure how it would affect someone in the Guard let alone someone enlisted for the purpose of commissioning. I’ve been burning through quite a bi…

Hi all, I know that the Reserves used to have the unsponsored UPT program and I heard that they pretty much shut that down in 2020, but with things getting back to somewhat normal, are there any plans to bring that program back? I'm not sure if they shut it down because of covid or because the program wasn't that helpful for getting new pilots. Any gouge is much appreciated, thanks guys!

I’m struggling to find some info. How can an ANG Officer find when they are eligible for promotion? My DOR to O-4 was 1 Oct 19, and my unit is having a mass exodus of O-5s this year freeing up a ton of O-5 billets. Would I be eligible to meet next years O-5 board and pin on 1 Oct 23? Hello all, I searched through the threads but couldn’t find any recent information. Now that I received TFOT dates, I’m trying to give my current employer an estimated timeline of my absence. Can anyone give recent info on how long seasoning is based on experience or through the grapevine? Thanks in advance!

Hello! I am currently an Active Duty Navy Helo pilot with 2 years left on my commitment to the Navy. I am trying to make the transition to ANG / AFRC Fighters and looking for some inspiration of anyone that has been picked up by a unit in a similar situation. I know the boards are very competitive and fighters can be harder on age but not too sure how units look at someone like me. I know my age is probably the biggest factor (I will be 31 when I apply). Two big questions I have: 1. What is the earliest I can apply to boards? Is a year out from my separation date sufficient? I am concerned with applying too early and still being tied to the Navy while a unit is…

First some background; I've been applying to almost every fighter board since 12/19, with no interviews, no feedback, no nothing. Fighters is the dream, specifically in the Great Lakes area (with the 115th being my "dream unit), but I'll go anywhere if hired. I saw the 115th posted a UPT board on their RC-26's, and I'm considering applying. Hypothetically, if I was hired there, would it be possible to prove myself as a pilot in the unit, and then possibly transition to the fighter side, or would I be locked it? Should I apply, or pass on this and keep pushing fighters? Abridged credentials: age 24, PCSM 94, Pilot 99, Nav 99 (rest of the scores are eh), BS with …

Ladies and Gents: They say insanity is "doing the same thing over again and expecting different results". There is a limit between insanity and determination here. I've applied to multiple units the past 2 year always ending in rejection. Had 1 interview at a fighter squadron last year. PCSM/AFOQT Pilot high 90s. Near 1000 hours flight time and CFI. Engineer undergrad and graduate degree with high GPA. Good job. Athletics in college and now. Age 30. Well- rounded. I ask for advice on my application post rejection and either it is no response or it is "we don't see anything wrong, but it was just really competitive this year". This isn't really c…

Anyone have experience with transitioning airframes in their career with the guard/reserve? How long did you give a unit before you made the switch? How hard is it to go from fighter to heavy or heavy to fighter/bomber?

Had a guy transfer in Oct—still hasn’t received his certs or flag. ARPC is now so behind with retirement processing that they’re not even looking at applications until the month prior or the month of transfer. If they don’t look at it until this late date, I have to ask: WHAT IS THE REASON FOR MANDATING A 6 MONTH (minimum!) NOTICE!?

This may sound a bit out of the box/left field. Hypothetically speaking, would it be conceivable, if I were an Individual Reservist/IMA in a given squadron, could I work out an arrangement to request active-duty orders to cover me while I pay for my own flight training in the hopes of completing all my ratings in order to streamline the process and make myself competitive for a board? The only cost would be salary and NOT flight training, which would be covered (in this case) by GI Bill funds.

Similar questions to what a Marine Osprey pilot asked a little while back. I am currently a Marine UH-1Y Pilot. I have enjoyed my time in the Marine Corps and Iove flying the Huey. However, my fleet time has been tough on my family. My initial commitment will be complete in 2023 but can accept orders to extend. I have experience as FAC/JTAC and did a tour with an infantry battalion and my next duty station will be an ANGLICO. I am interested in applying to one of the Air National Guard units that flies the A-10 while at my next duty station. I've done some research on the transition process, however I've been unable to find specific answers as to how the ANG wil…

Searched the forum and saw mixed opinions on this. Currently AD MQ-9 Pilot looking to go to UPT in the Guard/Reserves. Have a visit to a Heavy unit in the next month. I’ll be in back home on leave and they were nice enough to let me spend some time at the squadron. Not a drill weekend or big organized rush event, just a casual midweek visit. Show up, meet people, see the plane, maybe lunch afterwards. My questions are: Wear nice civilian clothes or bring my flight suit with me to wear? Should I bring as much of a UPT packet as I have together right now with me and update it later? Or just a resume? I know first impressions are important, appreciate any help

Please forgive me if I've missed something via search--I've tried numerous queries here, on other similar sites, ePubs, and generally via Google, but can't seem to find anything official that points to UPT age waiver availability for those over 33, and in my scenario, specifically re: an ANG UPT slot. In short, I'm working with a very cool and really genuine ANG recruiter of a non-fighter unit who's been super helpful in our initial convos, but I feel we may have some wires crossed re: UPT age waivers. Essentially, they told me that active duty cut-off age for UPT is 30, but on the AD site it says "Becoming an Air Force Pilot requires you to meet strict physical, med…

I'll be on a mob for the first time second-half of FY22 (1 Apr - 30 Sep) and I'm looking for an official reference one way or the other on if I can take OCONUS leave. I'm an RPA pilot so the "mobilization" is at our home station flying our normal combat line, so no change in location/mission/etc. from the normal federal MPA orders we work all the time. I had initially thought it'd be no different than taking leave while on federal orders any other time, but other folks have raised their eyebrows and said to try to find out for sure. Looking to have a solid reg to point to before I either book expensive tickets to Europe or rolex the family vacation to another time. T…

I’m gonna be moving to the DFW area when I separate from AD this year. I’ll be going airlines for my civilian job, but thought I’d try something less-traditional and see if anyone here has experience/advice on how to go about finding a part time, non-flying position at a local unit? I’ve looked on the reserve vacancies list on vMPF but can’t seem to find anything useful or informative. I’m aware of the ALO gig, but want something to fall back on that pays should Isom not cut the mustard at American in the next few years… Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'm looking to join the ANG in college and fly (hopefully) after I get my degree. I'm still in high school and working on my PPL and plan on majoring in Professional Aviation in college. I'm going to do everything in my power to make myself as competitive as I can be (high GPA/PCSM, leadership roles etc.) but I was wondering just how much joining early would benefit me later down the road? I plan on enlisting as a crew chief to work as close as I can to pilots. Thanks for the help.

Greetings All, I am an active duty Marine Corps officer who is looking to applying for a UPT slot in the Air Force Reserves. I just wanted to gauge how someone like myself has a chance of being selected for a UPT slot. My recruiter stated that obtaining an age waiver (ETP) is just a matter of paperwork and should not be a showstopper. Below is my brief stat: Rank: O-3 Commissioned Service Time: 7 years Active Duty Time: 5.5 years Age: 30 MOS: non-rated Flight Experience: PPL (Airplane-SEL) AFOQT: Pilot 89, Nav 71, Acad 33, Verb 27 (no clue what happened..), Quant 45 PCSM: 93

I made a thread a while ago about advice for what to do during a unit visit. Sadly that visit ended up being cancelled due to Delta Variant. I've tried calling the unit back since but no luck. I've been calling several heavy units all across the country, mostly focused on areas I want to live. But it seems that every single one does not allow visits. Either due to delta variant or they say they get too many applicants/visit request they can't have 100+ people come and visit. Or the more common one, the scheduler gives me the number for an officer and their phone always goes straight to voicemail with the voicemail box being full. Has anyone else had any luck?
