Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

My smart mouth brother was talking to me the other day about Navy heritage and why he said I would be missing out if I decided not to go Gold and Blue... Well the thing he said that got me thinking was the part about heritage and how the Air Force of today seemed to be lacking it, which I couldn't believe to be further from the truth! So I was interested in starting a thread on Air Force heritage to speak of all the great 'ol tales and pictures from the old days up till now. Pretty much to remind us all of what we are working towards and doing our best to be part of! I figured I'd kick it off with the 50's era when the Air Force was leapfrogging aviation records e…

AFSOC SMA shot and killed by police. SMA was in his home, responding to knock at door, apparently no announcement from police, nothing seen out peephole so he rightfully went and got his gun. While coming back to door, police broke in and shot him. Bodycam will set the truth free. Happening too often. This is from the same department that had the cop who lit up the occupied police cruiser due to acorn falling from tree. He resigned and is able to work elsewhere. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/roger-fortson-us-airman-shot-killed-florida-sheriffs-deputy/

This almost belongs in the WTF thread because it is so out of character for our fearless leaders- the Air Force is actually fixing something it messed up almost a decade ago. I am both impressed and scared this will be messed up somehow. From the AF Force development Facebook page: SQUADRON SUPPORT--HELP IS ON THE WAY: As you may be aware, the Air Force is continually looking at how to best provide support to our commanders and Airmen. Accordingly, our efforts led us to move additional support back to the squadron level in the form of Unit Orderly Rooms. When fully implemented, a typical squadron will have support staff with at least one personnel specia…

I could have sworn there was already a discussion started on this somewhere buried in another thread but I can't seem to find it. Is anybody else starting to think this plane might never fly again? The fact that what Boeing keeps calling a simple software fix is now going for at least 16 months before recert by the FAA (assuming they don't delay it yet again this summer) doesn't inspire much confidence. Not to mention the other issues that keep cropping up in the news. Some of it I'm sure is not that unusual and is only newsworthy because of the grounding but it's a pretty bad look. I hear lots of people claiming they won't ever fly on a MAX but I don't really believe the…

So the douche was an ex-USAF type who was Court Martialed and discharged. Of course he was using an AR-15...let the politicization begin. For those with CCWs how often are you carrying? I am to the point I feel naked without mine, even at my son's soccer practice.

I had just finished doing morning PT at my college when I reported to a running class about an hour later. I was lucky in that I did not have to wear a uniform of any kind to this class, and that I could blow off some steam. It was a particularly cold Texas morning, and I remember having the chills until I started running. All of the sudden, someone ran up to our group as we were doing some cool-down stretching, and she said that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center. I immediately thought in my mind that this must have been a mistake, and how it might have been a single engine aircraft that did not cause much damage. The class broke early, and we glued ourselve…

In what is perhaps the most dystopian thing Biden and his extremists have ever proposed it appears we will now have a Disinformation Czar that falls under the Department of Homeland Security. Department of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that his agency is creating a “Disinformation Governance Board.” Is anyone paying attention? Does anyone care? If you swore an oath to the Constitution you should be appalled and shocked. The proposal gives this board the ability to regulate free speech, to take down websites, to control what the press reports. For the record, previous organizations like this only existed in Russia, Nazi Germany, Iran and North K…

  17. A colleague who is F22 pilot for the Virginia ANG had honor of flying a Phantom at Eglin. He flew the aircraft we had at the reunion. Here is the F-22 pilot’s thoughts on flying the F-4: I flew your jet a couple days ago (see attached). I had a little trouble getting the engines started, so I climbed out and shoveled some more coal in the back; after that she fired right up. Ground ops were uneventful, although I couldn’t figure out why the cockpit smelled like body odor, Jack Daniels and cigars…and that was BEFORE I got in it! By the way, what’s with the no slip crap on top of the intakes, it’s like you have permanent icing conditions due to that spray on rhino t…

Probably a long shot, but I'm looking for anybody who flew with an A-10 guy around 2003 who goes by "Donk". While putting together a farewell ceremony for him, a bunch of us found out he got a Silver Star on a combat mission in Iraq in '03 for putting his ass on the line and saving a bunch of guys on the ground. He's the type who would never talk (brag) about it, but we got a copy of the official decoration. Now we're looking for anybody who may have a first (or even second) hand story of what happened. If anybody can help out, please PM me.

I have been with this board since shortly after its inception - I joined as a young Captain and tapered off after retiring two years ago as a Lt Col. Due to my departure and shrinking level of current USAF knowledge, my contributions to this board have diminished. But it occurred to me after a PM from a board member that myself and others in my situation still have a valuable contribution to those who are looking towards a post-AF career. So I'm starting this thread as a specific Q&A for airline hiring, with emphasis on direct connection to guys working for the airlines who can mentor and assist. I am not posting this in the "Leaving the Air Force for the Airl…

I am shocked and saddened to report our friend and longtime forum member Danger41 passed away yesterday after a freak accident. Many of us knew him in real life and it would be an understatement to say he was an American hero. He was an incredible pilot, officer, mentor, weapons officer and a friend to all. More importantly, he was a dedicated husband and father. I had the honor of mentoring him throughout his career and was with him at Nellis the night he put his patch on...there are not enough words to describe how good of a person he was. This is an absolute gut punch and a reminder that every day is a gift, never miss a chance to tell a friend or family…

Cadet fell off ship re-enacting movie scene The Associated Press DENVER — An Air Force Academy cadet who plunged about 50 feet from a cruise ship balcony into the ocean with a female passenger thanked his rescuers Tuesday but didn’t discuss the details of what happened. Ernesto Guzman, 22, and Celeste Clarice Partee, 20, fell from the balcony of Partee’s cabin on Princess Cruises’ Grand Princess about 150 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas, on March 25. KWGN-TV in Denver reported that the pair were re-enacting a famous scene from the movie “Titanic” when they fell. Guzman took off his clothes to stay afloat, the station reported. Both were rescued by boats…
