Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Does anyone out there pay for the long term care insurance (nursing home, in-home care, etc.) that is offered to us through the AF? Do you know of anyone who has ever benefitted from it? Thanks

  2. Above! Russia May Target U.S. Sats With Laser Jet The notion isn’t as fanciful as it sounds. Back in 1984, the Soviets trained a laser on the Space Shuttle Challenger, which it believed to be an orbiting spy. The laser “caused malfunctions on the Space Shuttle and distress to the crew,” according to Jane’s Intelligence Review.

Hey guys, this is my first post. I just transferred to the Air Force Academy after doing some civilian flying. I have about 240 hours (part 61 and 141) and it is all on paper logs. I have been thinking of changing over to an electronic logbook program (I would still maintain the paper logbook for checkrides and a backup. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a program that is good at tracking military and civilian hours. I just got on the flying team here and will be flying a bit in T-41s and T-51s and hopefully will get a pilot slot and I want a program that will be flexible enough to handle all my flights. Here are some things that I would like: …

Was crossing the pond a few months ago and had a Travis KC-10 dragging us. The boomer (or somebody else on board) may or may not have taken a few snap shots for us after we were done AAR'ing. Trying to see if anybody can help me find any info. I think it was a AFRC tanker and crew.

  6. A long time ago someone posted a powerpoint presentation that was given during a retirement ceremony. If I remember right it was something along the lines of: Things I learned in the Air Force. It was a humorous presentation and essentially ended with something like "And everything can be briefed using Powerpoint, even a retirement" Does anyone have this ppt or can help me find the thread that had it? I UTFSF and google-fu to no avail.

  8. In the days after 9/11 it became apparent we had problems dealing with low slow flyers. Through the years there have been several suggestions on how to deal with the issue. For a while it was even suggested the Light Attack fleet would offer a solution. Over the past few weeks there have been NUMEROUS TFR violations around the county and Live ATC has recorded many of the interactions. I listened to a few the past few days and it appears we still have issues. Without ATC we would have a very difficult time finding and in some cases maintaining contact.

  9. Story here. To me this reads like politicians trying to intimidate the appellate process... I remember reading about this case in the Stars and Stripes when the trial was happening and thinking the evidence sounded weak. I have a hard time imagining in the current environment that the NAF would overturn the conviction without good reason.

It's a couple of weeks past now (and I'm beginning to sober up) and I'm happy to be able to report that Lucky Devils and Forgotten 1000 had a successful Las Vegas reunion - nineteen years after the Gulf War. From countless pitchers and drinks at TGI Friday's at the hotel/casino, to golfing on Friday morning, walking 'The Strip', and then out to Nellis on Friday evening for a shot(s) of Weed at the USAF "Fighter" (sorry, old habits die hard) Weapons School bar, and a meet-and-greet / pre-airshow party / full contact crud game hosted by the Nellis O-Club (followed by a repeat performance at the Friday's bar.) Saturday morning was bright, windy and cool as we were off…

So the Lufwaffe made a big deal about a supposed Elephant Walk of Typhoon Eurofighters... Notice anything odd about the pictures? All the jets are chocked and have no pilots...Basically they towed 18 jets out on the the runway, took a picture, and blasted social media...cool story Bruder.

The following is a true story that occurred Friday at my base and to me, illustrating why I believe the USAF over-relies on computers: 0700: Pull up to the gate, I hand my CAC (that's what it is now) to the SF guy and he looks it over. The bottom right portion of the card is pealing up (due to shoving it in/out of the CAC readers) and my expiration date is hard to view. SF guy says "You need to go to MPF and get a new ID card because this one is unreadable. Many cars behind me, so rather than subject others to a wait...I move out smartly. 0900: Enter MPF, only two people getting cards, so this SHOULD go quickly. I was very wrong. Getting a new CAC is an exercise in f…
