Squadron Bar
Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.
1 – Keep it civil
If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed. If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.
2 - Listen before you speak
A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."
Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force. Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.
3 – UTFSF
Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.
4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.
After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"
5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense
This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".
6 – No unpaid advertisements
Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed. Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum. For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

https://afthunderbirds.com/site/show-season/ "The implementation of across-the-board cuts in federal spending has caused the curtailment of the Thunderbirds 2013 show schedule. Effective April 1, all of the team’s performances have been cancelled. The team still plans to perform at the Titusville, Fla., air show March 23-24." I hope this happens to Tops in Blue and all the other "morale" functions considering the Thunderbirds reach more people than any military band.

Gents, I need to replace our bag/case to carry DTC's and DVR's to/from the jet. Does anyone use anything other than the standard green sack sledge (named as such due to pendular swinging into ballzac area while attached to harness) or Royal Bags tool kits? Cheers

I got into the hobby of home brewing beer over the last year and would like to keep it going after relocating this year. I'm heading off toward the end of this summer for my first training base and wondered if anyone has ever had experience with someone in their squadron brewing beer. I'm hoping to make it into something that I can do with my class and maintain as a weekend hobby/stress reliever.

First question: I understand I can take $10k penalty-free from my roth IRA for a first time home buying down payment. Halfway through my twenties, is it smarter to use this or take out the money from a taxed non-ira account? Both accounts are long term 8-10% mutual funds. Second question: If I take out the $10k from my roth, which I understand will remove contributions first, what if I can't close on a house and don't end up using it...can I put that money back as if nothing happened? I've maxed out my contributions ever year, so would I be able to put that $10k back as a whole, or am I stuck back with the ~$5k per year limit? According to https://www.wellsfa…

https://health.yahoo.net/news/s/ap/fda-requires-lower-doses-for-sleep-medications WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is requiring makers of Ambien and similar sleeping pills to lower the dosage of their drugs, based on studies suggesting patients face a higher risk of injury due to morning drowsiness. The agency said Thursday that new research shows that the drugs remain in the bloodstream at levels high enough to interfere with alertness and coordination, which increases the risk of car accidents. Regulators are ordering drug manufacturers to cut the dose of the medications in half for women, who process the drug more slowly. Doses will be lowered f…

As a friend said "Like putting Sandusky in charge of the Boy Scouts." GUEST OPINION by Don Bendell JOHN KERRY FOR SECDEF? HELL NO! On February 2, 2011, I fell off a ladder landing on a steel fence in below-zero weather, fracturing my back, a rib, and got a minor concussion as well as a subdural hematoma, a brain bleed. Then, last fall I fell off the top of another ladder in my barn and severely bruised my hip, thigh, and a rib. Eight years ago, I wrote about my wife having rotator cuff surgery, getting an infection, and having to be cut in the same scar and operated on again. Just thinking about such pain and facing traumatic memories like those, makes me cringe. …

On the current "I only want to be a pilot" thread, there are a couple of dudes with four generations of military flying. One of the things that adds to the growing divide between the military and the general civilian population is a lack of familiarity with the military. Related to that is the anecdotal evidence of sons/daughters of military dudes following in those footsteps. So my question (I'd post a poll if I could figure it out) is how many generations of military flying do you have? If you are the first, what fired you up to pursue your vocation (Doesn't have to be the guy/gal driving, anybody who straps in would be welcome). If a succeeding generation, w…

Too late for Christmas this year but perfect for new years! Saw this in the squadron bar: 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. baking powder 1 cup water 1 tsp. salt 1 cup brown sugar 4 large eggs nuts 1 bottle of Weed 2 cups dried fruit Sample the Weed to check quality. Take out a large bowl; check the Weed again to be sure it is of the highest quality. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Weed is still okay. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break two eggs and add to the bowl and chuck iin the cup of dried …

Recently I've come across some collegiate level education that's free online. This has potential to be pretty beneficial if you're prepping to go to school full time or if you're just looking to get ahead of the curve. The Educational Portal offers credit for the courses taken upon completion of a proficiency exam. I'm not sure of all the details, but if you're seeking an undergraduate degree, it seems to be a pretty good deal. Or you can always brush up on your Algebra in order to talk trash to your kid's 7th grade teacher. Educational Portal MIT also has some stuff. I haven't sifted through much of it, but it looks valuable. MIT Open Courseware If an…

Haven't seen this posted here yet - here's the article in the WSJ. And the Chinese media posting photos of the great leader. Reminds me of the Iranian state media posting the Onion article on Ahmadinejads vs Obamas popularity. Good stuff... although this is my all time favorite Onion article.
