Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Ladies, The past few months have seen some heated discussions from both sides of the aisle and tomorrow night we will likely know who the next president of the United States is. Let this serve as a reminder that after tomorrow, regardless of your opinion of the person elected, there are regulations that govern the military and comments on the Commander in Chief. As military members we give up some of our rights in order to serve as protectors of this great nation. I urge all of you to become A-Political tomorrow night and remember the oath you swore to protect and defend the constitution.

I'm going to buy my first handgun sometime this week and am torn between the USP .40, Sig P229 .40 and S&W MP .40 (slight favorite). All have received great reviews, and after shooting them, I'm swaying towards the S&W. I'd appreciate it if any of you could share your experience(s) with these pistols...or if you have any suggestions for other pistols you think I should look at, fire away! Thanks guys, check six!

  3. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the founder of Baseops.net, who died at home this past weekend. We ask that you keep his family in your prayers. We will pass more information as it becomes available, until then... Him Him

Flew out to SoCal to grab a bite to eat. Saw this at the DFW airport USO. :( I am glad my parents can't come in and see our multi-service slander on a wall, or checkout line. My comment is not toward the USO, as they always have these out. I even remember the day's when it talked about new weapons or new bases. But I am rather irked at the state of affairs being so precarious and publicized that all 3 of these magazines have that trash on them. Perhaps its time to put those black plastic cover things they put on front the pRon mags at the liquor store/BX onto the "times/crimes" magazines. I personally relegate them as propaganda and let my politruk tak…

Gents Looking for a little help in righting a wrong... The Bentwaters Cold War Museum (https://www.bcwm.org.uk/) in the UK was the victim of a theft of two patches recently, and I was hoping someone on here could help replace one of them. It is a 'Got Nukes?' patch with a 'Nuclear Operations' tab at the bottom... Believe it is a AFGSC patch, definitely post-Cold War but at this point that's not the point. The point is some fucktard stole it (they actually moved a close circuit TV camera prior to gabbing it) and this excellent museum, run by volunteers who work hard to preserve the memory of USAF personnel who lived and worked at the Twin Bases, is now with…

I am officially a has-been. My fini flight was this morning, retirement ceremony this afternoon. Bittersweet to say the least. Getting out of that jet for the last time was a bigger deal than I was expecting. It's been a good ride - 21 years in and 18.5 of the last 19 flying the Mighty-Mighty (quick MC-12 stint in AFG back in '11). I haven't been posting much, but it's about to get a lot less. Thanks to all the warriors out there; keep fighting the good fight. Now I'm one of those guys that thank you for your service. I probably won't buy you lunch though - I'm still a cheap-ass airline pilot. Do your best to keep this place following it's roots - he…

  9. 🫡🫡🫡 to our USCG brothers!! ‘A Nightmare’: The Coast Guard’s Harrowing Flight to Camp Mystic I participated in a SAREX to certify crews in Texas in April, and was hoisted into a MH-65E Dolphin off a small island on Lake Houston just north of the McKay Bridge. Little did we know at the time that the Guadalupe floods in Ingram and Hunt three months would put these same crews to the test, and they (and others) rose to the challenge! God bless each and every one of them!

‘You are the reason I drink’ — Airmen bid adieu to decrepit aircraft dubbed ‘Lucifer’s Chariot’ “four terrible and terrifying years that aged me well beyond where I should be.” “You are the reason I live to forget.” “582, you’re a real nasty lady,” said Markham. “I had some great memories, but most of them involved getting off the aircraft and sprinting away from you.”

Just this past weekend my daughter lost her khaki "Air Force Soccer" cap while boating. The hat was a gift, and until you have kids, you'll never appreciate the look of dissapointment on my poor kids face when I couldn't recover the cap before it slipped deeper under the boat and to the bottom of the lake. Up to that point, I didn't realize how fond of the cap she really was. I've searched everywhere, to include google, the USAFA gift shop, ebay etc and only found a photo of the cap. As a plea for help, if any of you have a spare or know of one please let me know - I'll pay top dollar for a duplicate. Please PM me if you have a lead. Thanks in advance.

"The most curious thing about our four defeats in Fourth Generation WarLebanon, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistanis the utter silence in the American officer corps. Defeat in Vietnam bred a generation of military reformers, men such as Col. John Boyd USAF, Col. Mike Wyly USMC, and Col. Huba Wass de Czege USA, each of whom led a major effort to reorient his service. Today, the landscape is barren. Not a military voice is heard calling for thoughtful, substantive change. Just more money, please." https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/an-officer-corps-that-cant-score/

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1306699/Afghan-war-eyes-Taliban.html I saw this on Drudge Report today and it's worth a read, although I reject the implications of the parallels this jackass tries to make between the Taliban and the U.S. I'm guessing the text is a translation with all of the errors. AC-130s are mentioned a few times - I was unaware of any gunship "rocket" employment capability... What a great pity it would have been if this guy had been killed along with the scum he was running with. EJKIA - count it.

  15. An Update from President Mark A. Welsh III General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III President September 9, 2025 Members of the Aggie Family, I am reaching out today to follow up on a statement I distributed through social media yesterday regarding an ongoing issue with one of our 16,000 course sections. I directed the Provost to remove the College of Arts and Sciences Dean and English Department Head from their administrative positions. This afternoon, following full consideration of the facts related to this situation, I directed the Provost to terminate the professor involved, effective immediately. Please understand that these decisions were m…

Can anyone explain to me our future tax liability under the new health care law? I keep hearing talk of huge tax liabilities because "Cadillac" health care plans would be considered income. I imagine the health care we get as military personnel and retirees is considered pretty "Cadillac-esque." Are we exempt as military personnel? Does anyone on the planet understand this stuff? And yes, I know Cadillac automobiles are junk. I didn't choose the expression.

I brought this topic up elsewhere with military pilots I know, and it turned into a pretty good thread. A number of them are airline Captains and provided great perspective. I doubt I'll see anything new here... but since it was quite a fun and lively discussion, I'll ask. "Center the bug"... it's what airline pilots do, right? When you roll out of the turn in LNAV, you put the heading bug at 12 o'clock. "A married bug is a happy bug." "Heading to follow..." In 28 years as a military pilot, I seldom cared where the heading bug was if I was navigating on something other than a heading. In the U-2, I bugged my flameout heading. On final approach, I could bug…

Of course this is the only forum where I'm comfortable discussing this so here goes... Today I went to finance and was helped by the first openly gay person I've met in uniform...except not only was he gay, he rode a pink surfboard on a rainbow wave whenever it was that he came out. Complete with nail polish, a very meticulously done goatee (I casually asked him if he had a shaving waiver, he said politely that he was working on it). If there ever there was a walking stereotype, this kid was it. To be honest, as far as finance trips go, this was maybe top third. He knew what he was talking about and I don't think I will have to make a second trip. I like to th…

  24. Surprised nobody said anything about this yet. A new book - "No Easy Day" - is set to be released on Sept. 11 that details the raid that killed Bin Laden and was written by one of the SEALs who was actually part of the element that kicked down the door and killed Bin Laden. Obviously, questions about OPSEC and things of that nature are running rampant as a result. So is the author "Mark Owen" (pseudonym for the actual author who has been revealed by Fox News if you want to find him)a hero or a rat for breaking the silence of such a top secret mission? https://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/08/24/will-no-easy-day-book-on-bin-laden-raid-break-seals-code-…
