Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by Duck,

As I plan my next move, I came up with a question I am having a hard time getting an answer for. The guard unit I am considering joining is doing all deployments via Mob Letters, thus getting the Mob protection and whatnot. I will be a complete free agent with zero commitment to the unit. I plan on sticking around for a while, but I know eventually I am going to want to give up the job forever. Once you get put on a Mob Letter are you effectively blocked from separating/retiring until after the deployment? I had heard rumors AFRC was trying to make it harder to separate if you were tasked with a deployment but haven’t heard anything about the Guard. Thanks!

  2. Started by Smaggy,

So let me start off by saying that I am currently an Active Duty 0-2, and all i want to do is fly. I have close to 4 years in and with another 1.5 years left on my ADSC. 26 yrs old and no medical conditions. I have applied for the 2019 AD UFT board with hopes of getting picked up. During this process, almost all of the pilots whom I work with were telling me about applying to become guard. From what i hear the OPS tempo is much more chill, UPT is less stressful (know what platform already), and the Qweep (additional duties outside of flying) are negligible compared to AD side (Biggest upside according to them). From their advice i am now looking to apply to some units clo…

  3. F-35 FTU IP looking for a desk job (2006 year group). Willing to travel (home station Luke AFB), but max of twice per year (IMA desired). Looking to do the min required to log a "good year". Experienced with F-35, F-15E, FTU, killing terrorists. Dog

  4. Started by NattyBo,

Good morning! I'm current AD Enlisted Air Force, I just got orders to RAF Mildenhall. This is going to take me 3 years, which will be the end of my contract. My goal right now is to be able to start applying to ANG units about a year out, hopefully taking some leave and flying around the country for meet & greets/interviews (hopefully). My question: I've noticed that many units require or strongly recommend applying with a PPL. Right now I've got 13 flight hours, and I leave in 2 weeks so it's not feasible for me to hurry up and finish my PPL. I've been doing some research and it looks like instruction over there is much more expensive. There's an opti…

  5. Started by Yeeyee,

Should I include a DD214 in my applications, when it says I was in for only 26 days? I have mixed feelings about this because I was at Navy OCS for a month. Discharged for sitting height (able to fit in USAF aircraft though) and eyesight (got PRK-no complications). Perhaps I should attach a note with my DD214.

Looking for information from someone who has left the regular reserves (TR or IMA) and transferred to the IRR. I am looking to transfer, and then soon after get picked up by the PIRR (already have an ALO position worked out but waiting for the paperwork to go through)...but I want to transfer now. What happens when you transfer to the IRR without a job lined up already? Is this when you get the dreaded “break in service” and lose your date of rank? Are you medical records sent away to get lost in a storage facility to then need to be found and shipped back to your next unit? Do you immediately lose your security clearance? CAC card? Do you s…

For any prior HERC driver can you tell me what are the monthly requirements for the HERC and how a typical deployment looks like. Thank you so much!

  8. Does anyone have experience with getting selected for promotion while on AD and transferring to the reserves before you pin on? I was selected for major last year and my line number would have me pinned on in September of 19. However, I separated from AD in June and joined the Reserves before pinning on with the Palace Front program. I contacted AFPC and they said that i dont have to meet a majors board again with the reserves but my new date of rank is Dec of 2020 (when i hit 7 years TIG which is the reserve requirements to pin on major). This is over a year from when i would have pinned on had i stayed AD. Obviously im losing out on some good $$ while i wait the extra…

Sorry if this is being asked in the wrong forum, or has been previously asked Does anyone know if there are any test centers that are still conducting testing? I was scheduled for a retest and unfortunately, it was cancelled due to covid. Some of the units I wanted to apply to, said they would not accept score updates, post deadlines. Do you guys know any testing centers that are still operating? from what I understand it' shut down system wide, which sucks as it's the last thing I need to get done.

Hello all, I was just curious if anyone was familiar of the training course differences between the F-15 and F-16? I see the course length for the F-16 is 9 months compared to the F-15 which is 6 months. Which makes sense since it does not have an air to ground mission. Does one of them have a higher washout rate than the other? I've heard a fair amount of talk on here about washing out of F-15 but not so much F-16. Thanks!

  12. In the future, I'll be full time at my unit for a few months for deployment spin up, but will be coming from across the country. Different than just the UTA + some AFTP days once a month, where hotel provided and rental car is a cheap cost. I should have lodging provided as I'll be outside commuting distance.. any tips on car? Or other tips in general on being outside commuting distance for 2-3 months? I also plan on cancelling my lease out of state to save on rental payments. Thanks

Sad news for Nashville and the 118th. They used to fly 130s but are now a RPA/drone operation.

  14. Started by c130rob,

I see in the AFRC UFT Guidebook that they are no longer taking unsponsored applicants. What is the reason for it, is it just temporary? Will the unsponsored route ever come back in the future?

  15. Started by Dangerzone,

Does anyone have any info on if it is possible to do the RPA or ABM route through the ANG, go to OTS all that, and then switch over to manned flying and go to UPT year or two later after training. Or do you get trapped into the job? Just trying to see if that is a good option in the current flying hiring environment, or if it's just better to keep applying to UPT boards and being patient.

Hi All, I am interested in joining the 327th and have several questions. 1. What is it like to join a reserve unit that doesn’t have their own tails and attached to an active duty unit? 2. What’s their op tempo like? 3. Recommendations on where to live in Little Rock. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. The World Famous Bayou Militia is tentatively planning an inexperienced hiring board on Sunday, 11 July 2021 at NAS JRB New Orleans, LA. Obviously COVID will play a part in this, so be prepared to flex. Applicants should have a current PCSM, resume, transcripts, and letters of recommendation ready to submit prior to any visit. Please direct all questions to 122fspilothiring@gmail.com. I won’t respond to DMs, inquiries, etc. on this platform. Nuke Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

As much as this forum is helpful, this is for all prospective candidates. SHOOT YOUR SHOT. Many people get on here to brag about their 99+ scores and what not. Put your best foot forward and don't let regret look you in the rearview. Most folks can see if mom and dad paid for every thing, Work as hard as the day is long and do the best you can, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised where you end up. I'm a prospective candidate at 29, 10+ years prior enlisted. It took me a little while but here I am. Let me know if you have any questions.

I’m an AD 11M at CHS. I have a troop that is interested in applying for OTS. They cancelled the rated boards thru 2023 from what he’s heard. He’s now exploring the Reserves. Is the AFOQT required for Reserves and if hired, how long should he expect full time orders? TIA

  20. Started by Duck,

Hey gents, wondering if anyone knew where to start on this one. I’m deployed as a DO and got into a run around with an over-zealous HARM chick about needing an interfly agreement for me to put one of my ACs with another units crew to fly (AC of original crew was DNIF). If they are all CHOPPED (sp?) Title 10 assets and crew members, do I really need to go get interfly agreements from their home units??? That seems stupid. 21. Greetings all. We are in the process of converting to the C-130J. We have a few part time slots available for the right people if they are interested in making the move. Current loadmasters on any airframe are preferred but we can consider taking someone off the street as well. Applicants must live locally or are actively arranging to move to the metroplex. This is a fantastic area with endless civilian employment opportunities. Lockheed is across the runway, Southwest and American are headquartered here as well. This is a great unit with plenty of interesting trips/travel. Shoot me a PM if interested.

Currently a fixed wing pilot, looking for information from a 60 guard/reserve rescue guy on what that switch would look like? Let me know if you’d be willing to PM.

Hi all, I know that the Reserves used to have the unsponsored UPT program and I heard that they pretty much shut that down in 2020, but with things getting back to somewhat normal, are there any plans to bring that program back? I'm not sure if they shut it down because of covid or because the program wasn't that helpful for getting new pilots. Any gouge is much appreciated, thanks guys!

Hey all, I've heard that in previous years it was possible for off the street guys with no unit association to get an FC1 done on their own dime. Would any of you guys know if this is still possible? Apologies if this question has been asked previously, could not find any recent information on it. Thanks in advance!

  25. Will be visiting a fighter squadron during a drill weekend and am invited to a social event/roll call after work. Have read a lot of forums on here with the advice, 1. Don't be a douche, 2. Don't talk about yourself unless asked, 3. Bring a nice bottle of booze as a token of appreciation, 4. Be a cool dude(tte) Beyond that, any other specific DOs and DONTs you could give a novice for roll call and for the visit in general? Thanks in advance. -DD
