When flying a jet with a HUD I was curious how much of your time is spent actually looking through the HUD, as opposed to off to the forward-side. I was thinking maybe the symbology could maybe be a nuisance at times and you just look around it? What about during BFM and SAT?

I'm flying the T-38C and looking to save myself a copy of my HUD tape, but since it records the video analog, it seems impossible to find a medium to play the video on, and transfer it to my computer. Any suggestions? And buying one of those $500 tape players is out of the equation. Thanks in advance.

Well, I got a forward a while back from the cadre at Rucker. This is what the Huey II will be. Pretty gucci! It's as good as going from the tweet to the t-6!

Is it possible to fly Hueys for as long as you want? Or do you have to transfer over to the 60 and 53? [ 22. February 2006, 21:41: Message edited by: scoobs ]

Did a search and didn't find a relevant thread...I applied for a humanitarian assignment about 2.5 weeks ago to be near my father who has cancer. It's currently at the submitted to BPO step. Does anyone have any knowledge on these things and how fast they move? I spoke to my assignment team and there's an open slot at the base I want and they said that they don't anticipate filling it until the fall cycle; does this availability of a slot tilt things in my favor?

I am a weather geek and always wondered what it would be like to be a Hurricane Hunter. For those who followed Hurricane Melissa which is the third strongest hurricane on record (892MB and still intensifying at landfall), the NOAA and USAFR Hurricane Hunters had a constant presence as the storm built and hit Jamaica and Cuba. USAFR flies a fleet of 10 WC-130Js and NOAA operates two PC-3's. One of the P-3s (named Kermit), was flying a mission during the rapid intensification. As they departed the eye and flew into the eyewall they encountered what looks to me like extreme turbulence. Ultimately they elected to depart the storm because of the turbulence ..somethi…

Good morning all, Board results were just announced and I was one of the unfortunate ones that didn’t make it. Had about 24hrs to soak up this information and I think it’s time for me to start thinking about what’s going to happen next in my life. Here’s some info about my career so far. Commissioned 2015 and went to a non-rated career field. In 2019 I decided to apply for the Late-to-rate boards and got picked up as an early Captain. Currently in a flying unit flying the best MAF aircraft out there (IYKYK). A basic AC with about 1000 total time (UPT/Current MWS). I had an assignment to be an instructor for UPT leaving for PIT in a couple of months, bu…

I made a bet about a 747-400 landing at my local air field. The total length of the air field is 7010 feet by 150 feet. Lets say if the 747-400 land right at the start of this run way and land by the text book/ checklist as far as flaps and throttle can it come to a complete stop and not go over the 7010 feet mark?

Hi all, I'm really hoping you guys can set me straight here. I was picked up for an AD pilot slot last year and am waiting to go to OTS later this year. I currently have a great finance job at Lockheed and they are literally begging me to stay. While I don't hate what I do, I've spent the last 4 years of my life wondering... is this really it?? Am I just going to make my way up the finance ladder, then retire and slowly rot away? That caused me to apply for a pilot slot, as it's something that I've always wanted to do and offers a meaning to life that I don't think I'd find in many other places. Now, a year after being accepted and waiting in the OTS pipeline... It …

  17. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2012/01/air-force-suicides-rise-lead-to-standdown-013012w/ January 2012 has seen a record number of suicides across the Air Force. What does the Air Force do? Why, they schedule a 1 day stand down for additional resiliency training. How idiotic. This mindset that you can just brief away problems only causes more problems. So we have a one day standdown. During that we are reminded just how "important" we are. The Air Force can't afford to lose any one of its airmen (well, aside from the thousands they fired last year, and the additional ten thousand they are seeking to get rid of). Instead of a day off, we get another day of …

If you weren't a pilot, what would you do for a career? Just a fun thread, I guess. Curious to see what everyone says... If I didn't want to be a pilot, I'd defintely want to become an engineer; and if that didn't happen, I'd want to do special forces, or something of that sort. Next...

Good Afternoon, I'm currently at Pensacola in Nav/WSO training. I just finished API (both pilots and navs go through this together), and I have at least 3 weeks off before I start Primary Nav training. I was originally selected for OTS as a pilot but was DQed for PRK pre-op being out of limits so I was redesignated as a Nav. The AF just changed the reg so my PRK pre-op is now well within limits. I've thought on this for nearly a week now and I can't decide whether to pursue getting my original assignment of pilot back or not. I'm THRILLED at the chance to be a WSO. On the other hand, I've always wanted to be a pilot. I'm age-critical (prior-enlisted) so I don't …

Does anybody have any ideas on how to get cheap, or paid for aviation training (scholarships/grants). I want to get my private piloting license before I try for a pilot slot at OTS in 2 years. I'm one of those poor college students with about 200 extra bucks a month to spend on myself, so any help would be much appreciated. P.S.- I'll take donations too... come on folks? Think of the tax deductions!! :D

During a real, no-kidding inflight emergency with an IP, does the IP take over and run through the boldface/checklist items, or does he allow the student to work it out on his own? How does that work? Thanks!

A piggyback of sorts...as far as IPs, are they qual'd to teach all the stuff, or just the stuff from the jet they came from? Would a C-model guy IP for a SA ride? Also, little bit of a thread hijack, but if you're not already an IP and you go back to the schoolhouse to be an IP, do you have to go to PIT? [ 26. July 2005, 16:06: Message edited by: NSFW ]

  24. I washed out of IFF. I'm flying heavies now and doing just fine. Will my IFF failure affect my hireability with the major airlines or package delivery companies in the future? Anyone have any experience with this situation? Any suggestions on how to approach the topic if it comes up? Thanks. If this is more appropriate for the Road To Wings QnA I'll move it there.

Does anybody have any info on instrument flying in WWII? Did they have ILS or any kind of navaids? Was there any way to land in the weather? Or was the policy just to divert and stay out of the clouds?
