Squadron Bar
Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.
1 – Keep it civil
If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed. If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.
2 - Listen before you speak
A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."
Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force. Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.
3 – UTFSF
Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.
4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.
After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"
5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense
This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".
6 – No unpaid advertisements
Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed. Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum. For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Curious where everyone trains/shoots. Lucky enough to be in an area with lots of Forest service land and can pretty much have no limits on what type of shooting/drills I can do.

Some back and forth on this questioning if it is real. NY Times, Task and Purpose and ABC all say they confirmed with USSOCOM. Knowing my other veteran friends here in Florida and the number of weapons they keep, seems like a bad place for this plan of action.

So I thought about something, if UPT is maxed out and there is a portion of students that know they are going back to heavy units (a few guys sometimes do very well and switch to fighter units and vice versa but that’s the exception and not the rule) why not establish an ARC only program, half contractor half mil instructed to alleviate waiting in the regular UPT system / boost productivity? Adopt the 141 based training for pre mil instruction, but a stand alone program, then 1 or 2 locations for the multi engine mil based training. No T-6 time. GA based PPL with INSTM training then AMEL and x-country. Tailwheel, upset recovery and acro basics. No formation in this phase…

If crapping in the streets of San Francisco, rampant crime and extreme taxes were not enough to show you what a mess California is...look at Sheetz v. County of El Dorado. In short - a gentleman purchased a piece of land and wanted to build an 1800' home. The City of El Dorado approved the build but dropped a $23,000 "Traffic" impact fee on him. He fought it all the way to the Supreme Court which rules unanimously in his favor. The California Appeals Court has decided the Supreme Court does not apply to them and reaffirmed their original ruling.

Going back through my old e-mails, I found this gem. Ironically, it was written by a T-38 FAIP bud of mine who would later go on to be an Albino driver. Less than 10 years ago this occured, but it's a throwback to the fighter pilot days of lore. ***************************** Taxpayers beware; this story involves the combustion of tens of thousands of pounds of JP-8 and the consumption of many of your tax dollars in an effort to retrieve one long-dead aviator. Mr. Bones, or Mr. F. Bones, or Frank T. Bones, is the mascot of the 95th Fighter Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida (the home of the mighty F-15 Eagle). He has a long and glorious history, most o…

Here is a film clip from the Austrian national archives of the Wright Brothers demonstrating their plane in Italy in 1909. What is even more fantastic is there was an on-board camera on the Wright plane and the last part of this film shows it. It's crystal clear, and apparently the first in flight footage taken - anywhere. Wilbur Wright is at the controls on both of the flights. https://www.europafilmtreasures.eu/PY/322/fiche_technique.htm?ID=322 ://https://www.europafilmtreasures.eu/P...que.htm?ID=322 ://https://www.europafilmtreasures.eu/P...que.htm?ID=322 Talk about a heritage flight... Got this from a history buff pal of mine. Enjoy! ******************* This from history buff Col D. G. Swinford, USMC, Ret. You have to dig deep for facts like these: 1. The first German serviceman killed in WW II was killed by the Japanese ( China , 1937), the first American serviceman killed was killed by the Russians ( Finland 1940); highest ranking American killed was Lt Gen Lesley McNair, killed by the US Army Air Corps. So much for allies. 2. The youngest US serviceman was 12 year old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded and given a Dishonorable Discharge for lying about his age. His benefits were later restored by act of Congress. 3. At the t…

Kandahar Airmen Use AFSO 21 at War "After a brief Lean training session, the team proceeded to inventory all of the items in the shelter essential to the A-10 phase inspection operation and segregate the things they did not need or use. Once finished, the team straightened the area and gave it a good cleaning by sweeping the floors and turning in unneeded items to supply." Okay, so they clean up after themselves and call it AFSO 21? Way to go dudes! I'm going to clean up my work area tomorrow and add it to my OPR fodder!

https://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/05/science/earth/05satellite.html?partner=rss&emc=rss Maybe the CIA should have been paying attention to potential terrorism descriminators instead of using overhead resources to guage Polar ice cap health. Whatever your feelings are about global warming, yo have to admit that environmental monitoring isn't a part of the CIA's mission.

Not sure this has been addressed directly in another thread. After seeing a lot of reluctance to address religious convictions in other threads I figured we should have a place to discuss those separately if so desired. How does religion affect your views on your profession? On international terrorism? On DADT? On working with others who's views differ? Open forum for direct discussions of religion. Ask and you shall receive...

A couple of days ago we lost Hervey Stockman. Sixty-eight missions flying Mustangs during WWII, one of the first handful of U-2 pilots including the very first flight over the Soviet Union, and later six years as a POW after his Phantom was lost over Vietnam. Salute, Colonel! From the POW Network website (who I'd guess won't mind being quoted...)
