Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Two MV-22 incidents in Okinawa this week, one a total loss the other a major gear malfunction. A local captured some pictures of the water "landing"...I believe they all survived but looks a bit harder than a landing. Interesting series of pictures at this link https://mainichi.jp/english/graphs/20161215/hpe/00m/0na/001000g/1

  5. Hi, Some of you will be aware that I am an aviation photographer here in the UK and can often be found up the mountainsides of the Mach Loop On 16th March 2009 I photographed 91-0306 & 316 @ Cad East and to date these are my best photographs. For record purposes I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the direction of getting the Callsigns for the aircraft on that day, or even make the aircrew aware that I have some great images from that trip. I have been in touch with Lakenheath directly but unfortunately they only hold this sort of information for a couple of years. Thanks in advance Alex

  6. Hi all, I'm headed to UPT in April, and want to buy my fiancée a new car to replace her 2004 Saturn Lemon as soon as it fits the budget. She'll be commissioning when she's out of law school in a year, and I want to give her something that will make her feel good and serve her well over our first few PCS's--probably a middle-of-the-market crossover. I hope to fly C-17s, and as a JAG, it's likely that she'll be stationed at the same bases as me. (The following question is assuming that everything goes according to plan and understands that nothing is guaranteed. Humor me.) She's from Texas, so she isn't experienced with driving in winter weather. (And, well, she isn't…

  7. So the memo is out, 40,000 Airmen assigned to and under OPCON of the AFDW are banned from consuming alcohol for 48 hours surrounding the inauguration. Air Force civilians are strongly encouraged to adopt the policy as well. All of the promises from Fingers made to look like a steaming pile of poo in one moronic action.

  8. Started by MitchS,

I live in north Texas near Sheppard AFB, and have had pretty terrible coverage with T-Mobile ever since I graduated and left the family Verizon plan. I'm inclined to go back to Verizon, but I was a little put off by how pricey their mid-level data plans are. ($70/mo for 8GB plus a $20/mo "because we can" fee? Jesus.) My fiancée suggested Sprint because she heard they have a military discount, but discounts don't mean much if I'm dropping calls on a regular basis like I am now. I'd like to have coverage I can count on for my next few assignments, starting with Columbus this spring. Who have you had good and bad experiences with over the last few years, in terms of cover…

I hadn't heard until recently about the whole OBOGS issues and resulting stand-down, 60 minutes interviews and all the press and whatnot about the F22. Just curious what ended up happening. Anyone know of any resolution on this? I'm a rotary student so doesn't directly affect me but just genuinely curious...

The investment showdown thread seems to be more focused on types of investments and strategies. I thought a thread to discuss specific stocks and rationale might be interesting to some. Stocks I have been watching as of late: 1. Western Digital (WDC), mainly because they bought Sandisk (I bought Sandisk years ago in the low single digits and held it through four splits and the acquisition), I ended up with a large number of shares from the acquisition so I continue to follow. 2. Cisco (CSCO), This is an interesting beast because it appears their software/cloud sector is poised to surpass their hardware division. Interested in the thoughts of others…

  15. For those going cross-country westbound this weekend, Hangar 24 Brewery is having the grand opening of their new Lake Havasu, AZ location. B17 should be there, plus a number of airshow performers hanging out. Good times... especially if you show up in a military aircraft in your flight suit. If you're military and will be there, drop me a note. The beers are aviation-themed, and the artwork on the labels is classic. Even better... the beer is outstanding. https://www.facebook.com/Hangar24Havasu/ https://hangar24brewery.com/index.htm

Trying to change young, hormonal, healthy men who you want to be very alpha in order to do their jobs is stupid. 2. This is why we can't have nice things. 3. Don't be stupid on the internet. 4. Lots of collateral damage impending.

My wife and I are currently trying to build our house in FL... pretty much the most miserable experience ever. Looks like we might actually close this time but have a question on our storage. We moved here last week of Oct and put most everything in storage. We got the extension until 1 May I believe, but the house won't be done until about September. From the few folks I've talked to, building a house is not a good enough reason for more storage time. He said he's currently paying $750+ a month for storage and the government is no longer liable for damages. Are there any reasons that an additional extension could be granted?

  20. Win a Champ! $50/ticket or $125 for three tickets. Only 4,000 tickets total, so odds are good. It's a 1946 LSA 7AC Champ that I haven't flown much in recent years due to military moves. I finally found a better purpose for it. Get raffle tickets here. Some friends and I created a non-profit, Vets to Jets, to fund flight training grants for veterans and enlisted folks. The idea is that vets/enlisted have to either make life-changing decisions or pay some high hurdle costs to get into flight training (Post 9/11 GI Bill does not fund private pilot unless at an institute for higher learning). Vets to Jets is a 501(c)3 organization. Please pass this on to folks you t…
