Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  1. This is awesome, however if the Deid ever came under attack I'm sure an E-9 would pull this guy immediately out of the fight for being out of regs... https://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090522/lf_nm_...stan_gates_pink WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday praised an Army soldier in eastern Afghanistan who drew media attention this month after rushing to defend his post from attack while wearing pink boxer shorts and flip-flops. In fact, Gates said he wants to meet the soldier and shake his hand the next time he visits Afghanistan. "Any soldier who goes into battle against the Taliban in pink boxers and flip-flops has a special kind o…

https://businessonmain.msn.com/default.aspx...l&gt1=25049 I'm not a big fan (pun intended) of MSNBC or MSN, but I thought this was kind of interesting. It goes to show that an identity and attitude are important and, while you can build around it, quality and output are still more important. Those who show pride in their work should be praised... To make this more clearly aviation related, they use these fans in F-16 hangars and they are featured on one of the ads shown in the news report. EDIT:Noob mistake...

“Saudi Arabia has been praised for having one of the most well-developed terrorist rehabilitation programs in the world.” Had never heard this before. The Betty Ford Clinic must have opened a Terrorist Rehabilitation center in Saudi Arabia. Interesting article though. A crafty terrorist nearly took out a Saudi Prince. 6. Now I find myself faced with the dilemma of voting in favor of my own pocketbook or with actual principles. As much as I love money though I think I'm going to have to actually stick to my own principles here and not vote to pay myself. For those who aren't aware there is a proposed amendment to the state constitution in Ohio on the ballot this November, Issue 1. This amendment would authorize the state to issue up to $200MM of bonds to fund payments to any veterans of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq. The payments would be $100/month not to exceed $1,000 for anybody who served in the actual conflicts or $50/month not to exceed $500 for veterans who served elsewh…

  7. Went to the Dos Gringos Wikipedia page today, apparently it was deleted in October because they don't meet Wikipedia's standards for being an artist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Dos_Gringos "Although these guys have an interesting story, I could not find any reliable sources at all about them. They have an All Music entry, which reveals that all but one of their CDs was self-released, with the exception of one released on the Viper Driver label. I don't think this meets WP:MUSIC standards for inclusion. Deprodded."

A little snippet of Jeremy's going away festivities got put up on youtube. He's leaving us (FANG Crew Chiefs), to fly the KC-135 with the Reserves at Macdill. Good Luck at UPT Buddy!!!! (director's note: the bucket had a quart of mayo and five boxes of anchovies that had just got done cooking in the microwave-getting really foul smelling)

Was going through the news the other day and saw this. Not only no more lard for the monument climb, but the superintendent is thinking of dumping it altogether because of "unnecessary injury risk" and thinks that it will eventually "not be very interesting." Eventually we'll all be filling out hurt feelings reports, and maybe allowed to have some cookies and milk (although that may be a choking hazard) after flying our most recent sortie on Microsoft Flight Simulator. I'm sick and tired of the war against traditions in the name of PC or "safety" issues. I suppose I'm not the only one out there though...it's just not the same AF (or military, for that matter) I had rea…

Had to park the car at a farm and ride the four wheeler up to the inlaws cabin in NC. Nothing like starting the new year with a stiff drink, ragin fire, and view of the snow covered Smokey Mountains. Hope you and yours the best in the coming year..and keep those young airman, soldiers, sailors and marines on the front lines in your thoughts and prayers (if so inclined). Happy New Year. OL Patch

Can anyone read/translate French? If so, I'd be grateful for a transcript of the linked story: French news story re WWII fighter I helped a French maritime archeologist [sic] ID the wreck of a US fighter, actually a borrowed British plane called the Beaufighter. This particular squadron, the 417th NFS ( much later commanded by Chuck Yeager and eventually becoming one of the F-117 squadrons) had a bad string of crashes while based near Marseille, France.* In the general area where this wreck was found, there were two possible suspects. One where the crew ditched and got out, one where the crew didn't. I helped (think checking records, not diving on the sit…

  15. Above! Russia May Target U.S. Sats With Laser Jet The notion isn’t as fanciful as it sounds. Back in 1984, the Soviets trained a laser on the Space Shuttle Challenger, which it believed to be an orbiting spy. The laser “caused malfunctions on the Space Shuttle and distress to the crew,” according to Jane’s Intelligence Review.

Looking for a little n00b help from those who have the interweb skillz.... Yesterday I found out that I was the victim of debit card fraud after noticing some unauthorized charges in my checking account. After calling the merchant where the fraud was generated, I was able to convince him to give me the IP address from the fraud source: 173.234.216.236. Other than having it included in a police report, what else can this be used for? -9-

Reminds me of the Iranian state media posting the Onion article on Ahmadinejads vs Obamas popularity. Good stuff... although this is my all time favorite Onion article.

  24. Has anyone completed any advanced education and sent their transcripts to AFIT? According to their website, you just send your transcripts to their address or e-mail address and they will update your record on vMPF. It's been a few weeks now since I sent my stuff over and nothing is updated. I did get an e-mail the day after I sent the transcripts saying AFIT had downloaded my transcript. What kind of time frame have you guys seen for them to update it?
