Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Does anyone have any experience / advice with AAFES car sales? Additionally do you get the same deal at Al Udeid / Bagram that you'd get at Kadena / Mildenhall (ie. is there an advantage buying it "in the shit?") Thanks!

Sounds like the pirates have quite a successful business going! Any thoughts on whether or not we'll get involved? On the bright side... at least we don't have to send them as much foreign aid now!

What I don't get is what he did that was so horribly illegal that it necessitated a "manhunt". AFIK, naughty language over PA isn't a crime, blowing a slide isn't a crime. Stealing beer is a crime, but not "manhunt" worthy. Either way, to this dude, I bet we all wish we could quit a shit job with such style!

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1306699/Afghan-war-eyes-Taliban.html I saw this on Drudge Report today and it's worth a read, although I reject the implications of the parallels this jackass tries to make between the Taliban and the U.S. I'm guessing the text is a translation with all of the errors. AC-130s are mentioned a few times - I was unaware of any gunship "rocket" employment capability... What a great pity it would have been if this guy had been killed along with the scum he was running with. EJKIA - count it.

During the fall of Saigon, one Vietnamese family in a helicopter, low on fuel, gets rescued by a US Navy ship, the USS Kirk. The Kirk goes on to rescue 20,000-30,000 (estimated) refugees. All of this was forgotten until recently. I can't imagine being so desperate that I would drop my children out of a flying helicopter. https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129554870

Saw a F-15E dude wearing a "100 Missions Afghanistan" patch (drawn up just like the Vietnam one) in the chow hall today. Maybe someone "in the know" can set me straight--is this a joke or is this dude really THAT proud of his 100 OEF missions--I didn't even know when I hit 100. Granted, it's not the easiest place to fly (especially during the winter) but seems like this dude holds himself in the same light as F-105 guys flying to route pack V. Maybe I'm missing something.

Article copied from Fox News but they lifted it from the Wall Street Journal (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/08/08/sell-f-fighter-jets-saudis/). I thought these were reputable news organizations? I mean really? And I guess nobody thought it would be good to check and see if Saudi Arabia already owned any F-15's...I mean they only have 82 C/D models and 71 S (E) models...

From an undisclosed secret comm facility somewhere in the NCR: To: All HAF customers Recently, there has been buzz (bzzzzzzzzzzzz) concerning new DOD guidance allowing USB removable media devices (i.e., thumb drives) back into the network environment. The Air Force is studying the rules and information contained in the guidance regarding mandatory training, accountability, documentation, checks, auditing, and other constraints. For now, the existing policy stands: Personnel cannot use thumb drives on the HAF network. AFSPC is diligently working with the communications experts from 24th Air Force and SAF/XC staff to develop new standardized policies, procedures a…

I'm going to stir the pot a bit...I went to the airshow in Duluth last weekend and while I had a great time, I couldn't help but think about how much money the AF spends to execute the Thunderbirds' "mission." With all the belt tightening going on around the Air Force, why are things like the Thunderbirds and the God awful Tops in Blue (these guys need to be thrown out the back of a speeding van) still given huge budgets to travel all across the globe? Why not get rid of them? Now I realize this will never happen (public image, PR, blah, blah, blah), but I suspect that most of the rank and file of the AF would agree with me. As an AF guy, the Thunderbirds never made me fe…

As a former C-130 driver, SEFE and line puke, I had more than my share of fun in the course of 27 years on countless rotations, Panama, Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia, Desert Shield & Storm and Red Flag, etc. in the A's, B's and E's. But in August of 1993 it all came to an end when I retired. Now all there was to do was flying widebodies (flight attendants) between major population centers around the world. I thought I would replace at least some of that former excitement and so I became active in the local aerobatic club and, after a few years, began teaching basic aerobatics and emergency recovery training mostly to pilots who have never been on their back in a…

I just had my AFSC drop and although I received 38F1 (Force Support Officer ), I have a lot of bases to choose from. There are very few bases that I can't be assigned to, so with that what are the best bases for a single Lt to be assigned to? Not that it matters what I request anyways... I was thinking in this order: Hickam (long shot?) Vandenburg Travis Charleston Aviono Incirlik

Looking to buy a laptop/netbook within the next couple months, but not sure what to expect from the academics portions of ASBC, UPT, TDY, etc, or what the schedule will look like (ie, how much down time in between doing stuff). Is there any benefit to carrying a computer with you, or should it just be dorm entertainment?

Distinguished Baseops community, Wanted to post a "Get the word out" thread for not only these two individuals, but for anyone in the future who wanted to help Military members running for office. There was that one "Guest for Congress?" (not me) thread from a while back, but that was about that guy in particular. This is intended to be one in general for people running to help spread the word, potentially get advice, and anything else that may help them in their goal to continue to serve our nation, now as an elected official. I think we can all agree that if Congress had more members who wore a uniform at some point, our country would be better off. I know these …
