Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  3. Recently I've come across some collegiate level education that's free online. This has potential to be pretty beneficial if you're prepping to go to school full time or if you're just looking to get ahead of the curve. The Educational Portal offers credit for the courses taken upon completion of a proficiency exam. I'm not sure of all the details, but if you're seeking an undergraduate degree, it seems to be a pretty good deal. Or you can always brush up on your Algebra in order to talk trash to your kid's 7th grade teacher. Educational Portal MIT also has some stuff. I haven't sifted through much of it, but it looks valuable. MIT Open Courseware If an…

  4. Haven't seen this posted here yet - here's the article in the WSJ. And the Chinese media posting photos of the great leader. Reminds me of the Iranian state media posting the Onion article on Ahmadinejads vs Obamas popularity. Good stuff... although this is my all time favorite Onion article.

Hey y'all, I was a little more active on here a few years back when applying to guard units but have lurked off & on since then. I live in Houston where, as most are aware, we had some pretty gnarly flooding from Hurricane Harvey. As shitty as the situation has been for so many in the area, it has largely brought out the best in people. My wife and I were lucky enough to be spared from anything serious, but homes just a few blocks away were inundated with floodwater. Watching USCG helicopters snag folks from rooftops just a few streets over was pretty surreal. The other day, I watched a -130 refueling a couple pavehawks directly over my neighborhood. I grew up around …

I don't know if anyone else has seen these, but they are incredible. They were taken mostly in 1942, before the days of auto focus and built in light meters, by a very talented photog . The quality of the Kodachrome transparencies is so good that it's hard to believe these images are almost 70 years old. Here's the Gallery And here's a couple of tasters:

For years folks have warned about the spread of VEOs to Africa, a historically under-resourced AOR. Our haphazard withdrawal from Afghanistan appears to have emboldened these folks to grow their influence. We have added forces but the administration promised us they would be able to handle this with an "over the horizon" strategy which appears to be failing miserably. The U.S. Is Losing Yet Another ‘War on Terror’ It is the Rolling Stone so as usual take with a grain of salt. However, those of us who deployed and operated there will see the indicators of a growing problem that WILL manifest itself in the near future.

https://businessonmain.msn.com/default.aspx...l&gt1=25049 I'm not a big fan (pun intended) of MSNBC or MSN, but I thought this was kind of interesting. It goes to show that an identity and attitude are important and, while you can build around it, quality and output are still more important. Those who show pride in their work should be praised... To make this more clearly aviation related, they use these fans in F-16 hangars and they are featured on one of the ads shown in the news report. EDIT:Noob mistake...

Hoping one of you fine aviators can help me with our squadron’s Heritage Room. We’re looking to renovate it and make it relevant again. The JAG and others throughout the wing have historically scoffed at us having our own “bar”, even though the bar is just one piece of what this area means to the unit. I’m looking to help justify its existence and keep the “Bobs” at bay, and having some AF-level guidance would certainly help in that endeavor. Does anyone know of an AFI, MFR, or other guidance that speaks directly to a unit’s heritage facilities and what the requirements are to allow alcohol consumption in said facility?

You've seen the Breitlings, Omegas, Citizens and Seikos but here's another take. I have decided to become a small business owner on the side from hanging out in the bar. I am now the sole distributor of "The Pilot's Watch" in North America. I am offering this watch to my friends at a special discount before I go nationwide. If interested, it will be available with leather or neoprene bands, white or black face, all for the introductory price of $995.00. But wait, if you place an order in the next hour, I will ship you a second watch absolutely free, just pay the additional shipping and handling fee of $995.00 Hurry supplies are limited and going fast. …

Looking for a little n00b help from those who have the interweb skillz.... Yesterday I found out that I was the victim of debit card fraud after noticing some unauthorized charges in my checking account. After calling the merchant where the fraud was generated, I was able to convince him to give me the IP address from the fraud source: 173.234.216.236. Other than having it included in a police report, what else can this be used for? -9-

This is just a friendly reminder that nuclear warfare had its first of only two strikes on August 6th, 1945. This single event led to the cold war and the nuclear arms race with the Soviets. A toast to Tibbets and the Cold War warriors:

  21. When an aircraft fleet is moving bases or otherwise going away, I imagine the 100's of families leaving as well will affect the local housing market. Am I going to have trouble selling or renting my house? Obvious answer seems like yes, but how bad will it be, and should I/could I do something 1-2 years in advance? (like sell early and rent my own house before it happens) Anyone go through something like this?

Tell-all interview covers Iraq withdrawal, nuclear report, procurement and more The June 5 forced resignations of Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley — the first time in U.S. history the top uniformed and civilian leaders of any service were ousted simultaneously — shocked the Air Force and highlighted deep fissures between the Pentagon and Air Force leadership. Wynne sat down July 9 for a wide-ranging discussion with Military Times editors and reporters, explaining why he was really fired, what went wrong with the nuclear enterprise, what can be done about Iraq and how he sees the future of the Air Force. The questions…
