Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  1. Recently I've come across some collegiate level education that's free online. This has potential to be pretty beneficial if you're prepping to go to school full time or if you're just looking to get ahead of the curve. The Educational Portal offers credit for the courses taken upon completion of a proficiency exam. I'm not sure of all the details, but if you're seeking an undergraduate degree, it seems to be a pretty good deal. Or you can always brush up on your Algebra in order to talk trash to your kid's 7th grade teacher. Educational Portal MIT also has some stuff. I haven't sifted through much of it, but it looks valuable. MIT Open Courseware If an…

  2. Since it appears most of the 'Election 2012' thread has run its course, I thought I'd start a new one that discusses taxes and the fiscal situation that country currently faces--being that this is now front and center and the results will affect almost all of us. It seems that something will be done soon concerning the tax code (unless Congress allows the all the tax cuts to expire for everyone), so what are the thoughts on what will actually happen, what should happen, and what the consequences will be? My thoughts are that the House GOP will cave to some degree and will allow tax rates to increase. If I were them, I would make a deal that the 'tax rates can go …

As a friend said "Like putting Sandusky in charge of the Boy Scouts." GUEST OPINION by Don Bendell JOHN KERRY FOR SECDEF? HELL NO! On February 2, 2011, I fell off a ladder landing on a steel fence in below-zero weather, fracturing my back, a rib, and got a minor concussion as well as a subdural hematoma, a brain bleed. Then, last fall I fell off the top of another ladder in my barn and severely bruised my hip, thigh, and a rib. Eight years ago, I wrote about my wife having rotator cuff surgery, getting an infection, and having to be cut in the same scar and operated on again. Just thinking about such pain and facing traumatic memories like those, makes me cringe. …

Although I know this storm's been mentioned in the Election thread for potential impacts there, it looks like it may have other impacts. Numerous states and the District of Columbia have already declared emergencies in advance of the storm, and many places are expecting long power outages, flooding, and even blizzard conditions. Here's a pretty good graphic that succinctly describes why this storm is bad.

I could not find a thread about this, but I apologize if one exists. I am looking for people that know how to sell or trade old military memorabilia. Are there alternative methods to Ebay that can still connect me to buyers worldwide? How do you know how to price things (are there books or are there people that specialize in that)? Thank you.

Found out I'll be at Maxwell through deer season. Does anyone have any good info for non-resident white tail and possibly hog hunting in AL? I'm down for driving anywhere in the state on the weekends. I'm not much for outfitters (don't desire to pay $1400 for a white tail hunt), but if that's the only realistic way to hunt I am not against it, assuming I can find something reasonably affordable. I appreciate the help any of you can lend. Also, if anyone else here is going to be in AL for the first month of the early gun season, let me know if you want to put a trip or two together.

  17. After maxing-out Roth IRA's and placing a small mint in TSP, the wife and I are wondering where else could investment money go? Ideas out of ordinary? Heard these: Rental house, raw gold before in case of economic collapse, weekly stock trading, savings deposit program, bullets & assault rifles, lottery tickets We've also gleamed some info from previous threads on the Roth, SDP, and TSP. But haven't seen any good direct comparisons of those common methods or much beyond those common methods. What about a small side-business? Or something else? What is something different you all have heard/seen active duty do as an financial investment outside the norms?

I don't want to make this part of the thread discussing the loss of the fine gentleman who died during the L-39 portion of the Quad City airshow. Here's my question(s): It's 2012. We no longer have to convince the public that our Hisso-powered JN-4's are safe for them to ride in at the state fair. While I'm all for freedom and entertainment and cool airplanes flying close to the ground, Hasn't this gone too far? Haven't too many good people died just so Ma and Pa Kettle can be entertained? Is one human life - or even an airframe - worth ten thousand snap rolls at ten feet? Is the military's funding in danger of being cut just because a couple of thousand peopl…

  22. Written by an Air Force Bgen . . . This guy says it like it is and was. When the country is in trouble it wants the "Pappy Boyingtons" and his group to fight, but in peacetime, they want the politically correct crowd. His reference to Tailhook is because he learned to fly in the Navy, flying the A-4 and A-7 before moving over to the Guard. By BGEN Greg Stroud (Ret) Some of you know that I was recently "retired" as the 162 Fighter Wing Commander. The decision was made by Brig Gen Mike Colangelo, theArizona Air Commander, who replaced me because he "just wants to change the culture at the 162nd." Not for cause or performance or any other reason. This officer never…

  24. https://www.militarytimes.com/news/2012/08/ap-penn-state-riot-ends-dream-082712/ CliffsNotes version: ROTC cadet attends riot after Penn State's Board of Trustees fired Joe Paterno. He put his hands on a van that was already going over--he is charged the same as the people who purposefully flipped the van over. He decided to plead guilty to lesser misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and criminal mischief to avoid possibly being found guilty of a felony. Result: 30 days in jail, parole/probation, kicked out of Army ROTC, loss of $34k in scholarship money, one-semester suspension, and $8,500 in court costs, fines, and restitution.
