  1. I like to think of it as the ultimate loss of innocence when dealing with AFPC. Lt's who worked thier asses off to get to their dream job of flying a fighter get it absolutely yanked from underneath them, through absolutely no fault of their own. The justification, execution, and subsequent "re-cat" program all served to irreparably destroy my trust in the Air Force, and every commander who tried to half-heartedly back it up. I don't like putting negative posts up here, but this was absolutely inexcusable. It served only to refocus my priorities on what is best for me and my family, with no allowance for "needs of the Air Force" anymore. Every single pilot retention survey I get, my response begins with "TAMI-21..."

  4. And wouldn't you know it, just a few months later, TAMI dudes started getting TX orders. A few that I know are still in. TAMI was a lesson in values. Shared values. And messaging. And fucking up that messaging...wholesale. Yet, noone was fired, near as I can tell. Back to values...

  10. Did not use sir too much unless they were very senior to everybody. MX world we addressed officers by their rank, Capt, Major etc and of course the 2nd Lt whose life was being made miserable by a MX O-5 was addressed ell tee. If I was calling out a MX troop if in casual conversation I used their last name and if I started saying Amn Snuffy you know I was about to chew your ass. If my MX officer had a uniform infraction I would just make eye contact, point to my own uniform and he would look at his and fix the infraction, then I would just smile and walk away. Always keep it professional.

  11. I don’t understand not wanting to release a 12 series due to manning. If someone doesn’t have the foresight to realize you’d have an aviator for 10 more years rather than just a couple more until their ADSC is up and they either go guard or get out altogether and try to go airlines on their own dime at that point, then they deserve the shortage.

  12. Our current CSAF was completely against those dudes going back. Don’t forget. You aren’t a pilot. You’re a volunteer. Wonder if he still feels that way.

  13. I'll share my opinion. The Air Force does not have a shortage of pilot applicants. It has a problem with retaining trained pilots, and rated aviators in general. Instructors in their field are not only valuable for that rated position, but have fewer years left as pilot instructors. They would also be ineligible for weapons school by the time they are qualified, and likely won't be commanders. So by accepting a medium to senior instructor you are really detracting from two rated fields. Those people should, in AFs eyes, go on to great careers in their current fields.

  14. This. Saw this firsthand in a fighter squadron. Decided then and there that I would not extend my ADSC via bonus / GI Bill etc...

  15. Okay! I made $130k at the airline and worked an average of 11 days a month last year. Many of those were half days, as I had zero report times before noon. At least 2 of those 11 per month were “off days” on 30 hour layovers. Oh hey, I’m on one right now. Drinking Guinness for $2.35/hour per diem and $1000/ day pay. Meh. i mention this not as a brag (that’s chump change for airline guys) but as a data point. Run! Fucking run! You’re treated better and well compensated. The Air Force no longer deserves the sacrifice so many good people endure to serve. The O-6s and above just don’t care about anyone but themselves. I can’t stand their bottom-shelf management (leadership nowhere to be found) and the self-serving buffoons in charge constantly crushing what little morale and QOL we have left. Calling it a career (AD/ANG) later this year.

  16. Utter incompetence by flight standards and their inability to properly track qualifications.

  19. It wasn't that long ago (ok, 25 years) we were logging 10-15 hours a week...

  20. Not sure exactly what you mean by quals...but IP in your MWS is a must and I'd say the majority of us were EP's as well. Expect a 6 month non-flying deployment as repentance for this good deal. Otherwise 1 local a week (1 hr flying/2 hours other/3 hours total time) and maybe one TDY a month (usually 4-10 days).

  21. http://time.com/money/5178963/dicks-semi-automatic-rifles-cabelas-bass-pro-shops/ Cabellas/Bass Pro are a separate company from Dicks, and are still stocking and selling ARs. EditL Now that I re-read it, I think you meant that Field and Stream is Dick's version of a Cabellas/Bass Pro store. My bad, if that is what you meant.

  22. The use of the word “pause” pisses me off. You GROUNDED the fleet. I know that word sends the wrong message to the public, but the message you are sending to your IP’s and students is one of obfuscation and sugar-coating. When bad shit happens to an airplane or pilot, you GROUND it. Just call a spade a spade for Christ sake. These mind games from our senior managers are becoming transparent and tiring.

  23. Completely invalid and caustic attitude. You don’t justify unnecessary risk by saying “Well, some people choose to do dangerous shit anyways. So this should be fine.” You sound like leaders trying to tell everyone to overlook their shitty leadership by saying “well, Marines in Nam’ had it harder than you guys, so don’t complain”. It’s lazy and it’s no excuse for crappy decision-making or leadership. No, you don’t love flying more than pilots without unsafe attitudes. As a pilot, you should have enough maturity and judgment to override your enjoyment of flying, when presented with undue risk.

  24. Congratulations to all that have been selected. I can only imagine the feeling! I was not selected for the AD board this year. Here is my situation: Current rated officer; ABM with 2x deployments to OIR, FTU instructor, over 1,300 hours in my airframe 1x ETP for Age, 1x ETP for commissioned service 91 PCSM, AFOQT scores of 95 for pilot, 98 for ABM, and 94 for CSO Pilot license and Master's Complete, 4.0 GPA Strats: #1 / X from my squadron, #1 / X from my wing, LOR from WG/CC I'll say again, I did not get selected. From what it sounds like, ABMs are not being released to cross train to pilot at all. Obviously I am beside myself right now, hence the 5am post. I am not going to use this forum to blast big blue or the people that make decisions regarding ABM manning, but I know for sure that dozens of well-deserving, hard working ABMs applied for UPT and were never truly given a shot. What a slap in the face. Send me a PM if you got picked up for ABM instead of Pilot, CSO, or RPA. I have a few words of advice for you.
