  1. Hey guys, I have a very specific question for the peanut gallery; it only applies to Reserve AGR flyers so if you're not one you can scroll on. BACKGROUND: I had significant difficulties getting my orders extended to 20 despite having been granted career status (another long story) that led to my being unable to apply for AvB under the FY20 bonus before midnight 30 Sept. Therefore, I won't be able to sign the FY21 bonus until it comes out in (I'm being told) June of '21. On the reserve side, my airframe has achieved excellent manning levels (AGR), therefore I anticipate between that and the airline situation, the bonus is going away for me in '21. This means that because of delays caused by ARPC I am liable to lose out on $140K worth of bonus, all due to bureaucratic incompetence. GET TO THE POINT: (Again, Reserve AGR Only) Does anyone know of any circumstances in which a waiver for the bonus signup cutoff requirement was granted? Has anyone lawyered up? Do you think I should after exhausting all the normal lines of effort? Just thought I'd ask the hive mind, this is a pretty huge bummer.
  2. Promotion Increments for 1 Nov & 1 Dec are loaded to MyPers .... Officers Promotions --> (scroll down for) Increments to Lt Col EDIT: Forgot part 2 ... CC's/SR's have your specific line numbers, otherwise it should flow thru MILPDS to vMPF (Career Data Brief) within 24-48 hrs.
  3. Not at CHS anymore. I assume you're a viper guy. So I get the single seat mentality and wanting options. Scroll the map over and you've got Vance with barriers, and SPS down to the south has the same. TIK has about as much city around it as TUL depending on the runway. Also, TUL has vipers based there as well, so I would guess it would not be unusual for one of their IFEs to recover to home field. If a base needed to maintain a capability because big AF needs/wants it, it'll be tasked to the base. If not, then big AF just doesn't think it's important. Maybe the requirement was reviewed and deleted by the staff. If the HAF or ACC staff just missed it, well, that sucks. If it's a continuing ops issue, then up-channel the need up through your wing and to the staff. And if it's truly important, and really was only $100K, it'd be easy for money to be moved to fund it if ACC or big AF really wanted the capability. Agree that parachutes shouldn't be plan A/B/C, and that generally heavy aircraft have more fuel/redundancies/time to handle emergencies. But sometimes you don't, like wing fires (no way to put out the fire, and it has happened in the C-17 in the past) or cargo fires (may not have the capacity to effectively fight the fire or jettison the cargo), and it's a race against time to get on the ground. Stuff costs money to maintain and operate, and the AF (and bases) budgets are just going to get tighter moving forward. It sucks, and hopefully your community has good people on staff to defend what you need to hack the mission safely.
  4. So Scroll first. Got it! and also the recruiter on the active side or guard/reserve side for getting added to the scroll? I haven't been formally hired but I have a unit that's legitimately interested in me. talk to the recruiter there?
  5. Does anyone have a recent timeline for Scroll approval? My ISR sent the paperwork up in December and it has been at HAF since January. AFPC is ready to do the final approval for my PC, but can't until I am Scroll approved. I know you try and give 6 months for the process, but HAF sitting on it since January seems a bit much. Any ideas?
  6. So either I’m taking crazy pills this morning or AROWS is different. Looks like there’s no more inactive duty authorizations, just certifications. When you go into certifications instead of picking from a list of approved authorizations, you create a new duty type and proceed from there. Anyone seen any guidance on the change? Seems like a positive development in that you don’t have to route paperwork twice for the same period of duty, although now do you basically have to work the days on verbal orders before finding out if the paperwork in the system is approved? There is also a new Duty Summary page that is a nice backup to the excel sheet I currently use to track all my days. It breaks down all orders types per FY and per quarter for things like AFTPs. Edit to add: sorta answered my own question with more digging. From the AROWS homepage before you select the “member” menu (says), click on “AROWS Information Repository.” That takes you to a share point page, scroll down to a folder labeled “AROWS Release Management Notes.” Scroll down and open the PDF for Release Notes Build 41 15 Feb 18. Buried on page 11 of those release notes it says basically that inactive duty authorizations are gone and the streamlined process means members only do certifications. Doesn’t fully answer the questions about the new process but at least it’s a start. And yes, for anyone wondering, things are slow working AT on a federal holiday...
  7. Scrolling only applies to AD and AFRC officers to the best of my knowledge so that's probably why no one on a Guard base has heard of it. (I've been AD, Reserve, and Guard in my career). In the Guard, Federal Recognition is the name of the game because you can't promote without that. Currently, I'm on AD in Air Force ROTC and scrolling is very important as we can't commission any cadets until they are scrolled. Here was one notice to us from HQ: On Friday, 27 Sep XX, SECDEF signed the AFROTC scroll submitted 6/20/XX for over 200 cadets. Sounds like you had some AD "leaders" trying to scare you out of getting off AD back in the day without out any actual knowledge on their side. Go Guard! (I'm heading back there soon!).
  8. This checks. 180 days is the standard timeline, but workable at 120. I'm in the process right now. I asked for, and got approved, a 90 slip in my separation just for COVID, but I would have been plenty comfortable for separation, and I started the process about 200 days out. It should be as simple as applying online through vMPF and digitally submitting the form requesting a change in your separation date. I had to stay on top of my local personnel flight, but my request was approved in 10 days. Getting separation orders is a different story. That requires AFPC to do things, and your MPF to do things, most of which the won't want to do until 90-60 days from the separation date...when you'll be on leave...so engage early and often when the MPF until they get the point that you're not to leave them alone until you get orders. Important side-notes: - Yes, it's uncomfortable telling an airline you'll be available for training when you don't (and can't) have orders in writing yet. It's hard to take it on faith that Big Blue won't hose you in the end, but we don't really have a choice. Set your availability date no earlier than the date you calculate to start your terminal leave (which you can't submit for until 60 days prior to it starting). If in doubt, go to finance and have them calculate it for you. - If you're separating for AFRC/ANG, engage with the in-service recruiter (ISR) ASAP. Things like getting on the scroll for a AFRC commission can take three months. - Have a plan A, B, C, D and Z, and don't rule any of them out until you're off IOE at your airline. God Speed! FF
  9. Chime in if you can shed proverbial light. I escaped via VSP last September...didn't know about the scroll at the time, but requested a transfer to the IRR as part of my VSP application...transfer approved. My thought process was that I would probably end up in the Reserves at some point, but was not sure whether it would be in 6 months or three years. Anyhow, found the unit I wanted, recently got hired, and then found out I wasn't scrolled. Got in touch with a Reserve officer recruiter for my region (according to the one processing my paperwork, there are only 16 of these across the US). I am supposedly on the scroll now...waiting game. This process is the only thing holding up acquisition of training dates. 1) Has anyone recently dealt with being added to the scroll post-active duty? If so, what was your experience with timing from being added to sign-off by SecAF? 2) Other than opinion/hope/hearsay, does anyone know of a specific reference relative to IRR and breaks in service? I have heard and read various things from various sources, from official to unofficial...all seem to contradict one another.
  10. For all the reserve folks, has anyone received a UPT date recently from 340th? How long does it take to get a UPT date assuming you meet all the requirements (AFRC board, FC1, scroll)?
  11. For more fun, scroll through these... Awkward Photos From Mother Russia! Here's a sample:
  12. If someone was going ANG to AFRC CAT E....does anyone know if paricipation in the ANG gets you on the scroll? Obviously going AD to AFRC requires scrolling (which can take some time) but what about ANG (which does not require scrolling but MAY (as I have been told) get you on the scroll) to AFRC?
  13. Got good news today. My scroll was approved. The bad news is my DD-368 Conditional Release form expires (2nd or 3rd time this has happened) tomorrow apparently according to my recruiter. All sides are pushing to get me gained by tomorrow. I have an oath of office form in hand waiting to be witnessed and signed. I have to track down another officer or go to a notary in town when given the go ahead by the recruiters. Interservice transfers, your experience may vary, but be prepared to play middle man between recruiters, squadron, and others involved. Stay proactive.
  14. It wasn't a recent promotion. Nobody really blatantly stonewalled anything for me. It was more about getting every piece together when it was needed from all the different offices involved. Navy Bupers, my 4 different recruiters and I had been trying to figure out what "ratified into the Navy Reserve" meant in regards to scrolling. I finally tracked down the right people and found out that the "ratification" meant my last promotion letter in the Navy, not that they needed to verify that I was IRR. My last day of active duty was as an O-2 and I promoted to O-3 in the IRR the next day. The SECDEF P&R needed this information to scroll properly. The Navy kept saying my IRR file looked accurate on their side (showed O-3, dates, etc.), and they didn't understand the hold up until recently. The process definitely needs to be fixed, especially for inter service transfer types.
  15. Don't cry about one year. Check this out. Navy IRR officer transfer to AFRC. MAR:2017 Squadron interview and hired. Long story short: I jumped through many medical hoops and in the end I didn't require a waiver. I was very proactive during this process, and it required using in-squadron medical folks and a letter from a VA specialist to get the ball rolling (CSOs can get FC1A done in-house/in-squadron). My medical finally made it through the AFRC/SG backlog and was blue-stamped by AETC. We tried using a reserve medical squadron closer my current home, but medical sat for about a 1.5-2 years (My squadron and I were proactive during this time also.) Scroll list: This has been a huge hang up. This is my 3rd time sending the request up, and both the Navy and Air Force finally have everything in order for the transfer. My recruiter's boss suggested calling my state senator to complain. Navy personnel command didn't know why the hold up was happening either. I found a number for the Pentagon's Office of Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. This office helped track down names and numbers of folks that assisted. I was contacted by the AFRC's Personnel Office the next day. They let me know everything is good to go now. The hangup was SECDEF needed my IRR promotion to O-3 from the Navy. All my paperwork is now going back up the chain...for the 3rd time. I'm being told in-process with the 340th is October and follow-on orders should be sometime after. My hiring squadron is pushing for sooner. 2+ years...
  16. They no longer use a minimum uncorrected requirement. (Sorry to be that guy and correct you) https://www.wpafb.af.mil/Portals/60/documents/711/usafsam/USAF-Waiver-Guide-190417.pdf Page 722 (scroll farther for Refractive Surgery info) Don't know your case fully and you should discuss it with a USAF doc but it certainly looks like LASIK/PRK (whichever the doc recommends) is a great option for you.
  17. Starts around page 9. Scroll down and click on the hyperlinked "HERE." Quite a few complaints are certainly legit, especially about a certain individual named in the lawsuit. He definitely made the mil guys in our indoc class ask WTF?! He's since been removed from his position but he definitely put a bad taste in the mouth of the ARC guys. Sad part is that he was a retired AD/ARC pilot himself. I'm glad to see he no longer has his hands in the process.
  18. Actually, looks like you don’t even need CMS access to view that sheet. Go to vmpf>self-service actions >separations >voluntary sep >view my application then scroll down to the documents attached to your app. It’s labelled “new SAFPC transmittal” it’s a consolidated sheet that has the sq/cc rec, Wg/cc rec, afpc’s afsc #s, pc’s rec, and most importantly at the bottom it lists who will be the final adjudication. I think if “afpc adjudicate” is selected then it doesn’t need to go up to sit at SAF/PC for 8 weeks. That’s my understanding, and it jives with Goat’s earlier comments.
  19. Also, if you're en route to school your OPB will list "IDE....SELECT". In such cases the board won't even have to scroll -- they'll know you're headed to IDE in residence. Ipso facto...one more data point to prove that in-res vs distance is easily identifable to the board.
  20. Yes. Not trying to be rude, we've all been there, but don't be afraid to scroll up or do a google search.
  21. Hmm I’m not sure. I had to get an appointment order as a reserve officer after a break in service as a prior O. It took a couple weeks after all my other stuff was done for the accessions officer (scroll, ARB, FC1, waivers, oath/swearing in). May be the same thing? Not sure if a letter to appoint is the same as an appointment order. I’d just ask the recruiter.
  22. Reserve thing to allow a commission into the reserves...not to be confused with getting an appointment order once sworn in. This process, signed by the secdef, essentially recognizes a previous commission from another branch/component into the reserves. I don’t think the guard does that but I’m not 100% sure. Here’s a few mentions of it in the link below. There’s a little info on google but not much. It was a PITA because I kept asking my recruiter who asked AFRC what the status was and it was “awaiting secdef signature” for a long time...so it’s hard to get any SA on the status. http://www.flyingsquadron.com/forums/search/?&q=Scroll&search_and_or=or
  23. @FlyArmy how long did the scrolling process take? I was thinking I could only scroll after AFRC selection, FC1 (req'd for swearing in), and swear-in. I'm IRR, so not having a break in service might have affected my timeline.
  24. I had to get my ETPs signed and submitted with my packet to the AFRC board. My whole sequence was (keep in mind I was a civ on a break in service so ymmv): “hired” by unit, MEPS, FC1, scroll, ETPs, AFRC board, swear in, get dates, 2 days to inprocess reserves, straight to UPT a few days before my class dates. The guard is a little different so it may not be the same. But I have a little SA from when I was talking to Cathy R at NGB when I was rushing a guard unit and trying to figure it all out. She said I had to get the unit to submit my ARB and ETP paperwork to the NGB, get an FC1, and only after those were complete could I get solid dates. It sounded like I could be penciled in prior to that though. Not sure if she’s still the one assigning class dates, but she was helpful in discussing it with me.
  25. Warning: Nerd level bitching ahead. Discovered after a long deployment and lots of time in front of a govt computer. Go to the USAF bios https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Biographies/ Scroll down and click on a random letter in the last name search. Look for bios with an old-ish looking picture and pilot wings. Then check out the total hours and what that person did. Then look for some more recent bios and note the drastic difference.
